Indy's Back!!

I'll  take the opportunity to introduce the 3rd member of the party for this scene.Natalia, from Yoshi

We'll call her Tanker Girl

A real departure for one of my builds, I think she'll really give the scene that little spark. I love the artwork that went into this tiny (even for 1/35th) lady warrior, but I don't want to tell you what I paid for it(quite alot!) especially considering that the casting left ALOT to be desired

I did a good amount of clean-up before primer, and gave her a light misting so I could better see what needs some careful micro-sanding.

You can see I've already done a bit more work since primer--and the colour of the resin she arrived in. Only the boots we're seperate pieces, along with her soft tankers cap, which is later fit to her left hand. I'm sure I'll manage to get the figure cleaned-up and put to use-eventually
You can probably imagine the sort of chatty scene I have in mind now

more to come.......

OK...Back to the lovely (expensive!) nicely sculpted (awfully cast) Natalia from Yoshi.
Well, I've been doing some work from time to time, mostly some very fine sanding, and a little bit of re-sculpting , and re-priming, and I now think she's fit to paint.
.
.

.
Unlucky for me much of the work needed was to smooth the face and ponytails, but i think that went pretty well.
.

.
.

.

The uniform was moulded with some textures and I find that though more detail is usually nice, a smooth texture tends to promote better work in the end, especially when re-working is reqired. . Some smoothing was therefore done throughout, though it looks a bit inconsistant in these zooms--I may need to yet do more work, we'll see I guess.
.
.

.
I 've just begun to paint, using the same flesh base as the other figures--50/50 mixed with a new colour for me--Citadel Elf Flesh--seemed a bit fitting
.
.

.
.

.

I then applied two simple Burnt Sienna Oil washes, to try to bring up the tiny details
.

.
I found it an encouraging start

HERE....I've gone through the basic steps, with oil paint flesh tone, allowing for drying in between

Ms. Tanker-Girl has some dark-circles no doubt,
but she's shaping up almost right off

So, I've added a few thin layers, just evening out the basic flesh tints on princess here

Certainly adding some basic hair colour  improves the look alot right there

I actually brought-up the brightness in the skintone--using a Vallejo highlight mix--which gave me some decent results, over the oils, at least on this one---

Princess 'Talia here is getting that certain Red Hair---base coated here with
Vallejo Hull red #985 (The pistol belt got the same basecoat, yes)

A bit more to do to bring her to life. Experience has taught me to take my time with these things to get any kind of good results---thanks for staying tuned---------------

Progress Continues~

Putting the eyes in is an absolute must-though some may try to tell you it's not needed on 1/35 scale due to scale effect--that only is meaningfull if you only look at your figures at arms length---and since we see them blown up 2-4 times here---that doesn't apply! I've found Mark Bannerman's Way with a tiny splinter a great way to start--but after getting some excellent brushes I find these much easier and more accurate. Using a new W&N series 7 #000 brush, I painted in the whites using some slightly off-white Testors Enamel. This way any thinner used to correct, wll not effect the Vallejo flesh lights.

Adding the pupils the next day put the twinkle in her eyes. I used Tamiya Nato Black, this way a little alcohol can be used to correct, without disturbing the whites, done with enamel
I may have something this time!

Obviously I need to paint in her mouth to get her to start to look human--and yes I have added some shading & highlights to the hair, but will save detailing it for later on.

~Natalia Developes~

OK...things start happening a bit faster at this point--not so far to go

I painted her gums in , but none showing past her soft pink lips looked best. In fact, I liked keeping the over-all look of her soft, and given the kind of detail of the face, I think that was best. The mouth was done using Vallejo #842 Glossy White, 926 Red,& 982 Cavalry Brown(Red!) I also sharpened the detail of 'Talia's hands, using familar fleshtones. I'm not really happy with the kit's hands but re-sculpting hands this size is past difficult, I did work on them quite a bit,and they are what they are.

I think that's all I want to do on the face, though she needs some touch-up to the neck, and some detail to the hair still. The uniform colour is simply blocked in using a very thin mix of Tamiya XF-49 Khaki--a colour I like very much for Russian uniforms. The Boots are base-coated with Floquil Weathered Black

Note how applying thin Tamya paint allows for transparent coverage, revealing areas to highlight pretty well--though very consistant results are difficult to obtain this way---The tunic here is done using one thin coat--the trousers got a second aapplication after allowing to dry briefly.

OK............so halfway through painting her uniform now

Since I like the Tamiya Khaki, (and I've done these uniforms with it before--but takes great patience!) but Vallejo is so much nicer to brush, I made a colour match using 880 Khaki Grey (this is a warmer, more brown colour) mixed with 916 Sand Yellow & Panzer Aces 304 Track Primer . For lights, more Sand and then White. For shadows the 304 and in extreme a bit of 950 Black

The holster was darkened with Vallejo 203 Umber Wash with some 042 Cam Bl Brn in it. The leathers need some more work. I  also need to add her rank insignia, and finish the boots

Still a little rough, like I said, not quite done with uniform highlights & lowlights

She's fairly cute,I think--as much as I ever hoped for!

At this point she looks about ready to be holding her tankers cap, so time to get that painted. A short shot of Floquil Grimy Black from a spraycan to primer/basecoat so far---

"Talia's lone bit of gear--the soft tanker's lid--Notice I painted it a bit high-contrast on the finished figure--these we're really uninteresting originally--like a piece of coal---black on black---

~Natalia Complete~

One of the last things I paint is the boots---I'm always rubbing them free of paint otherwise. In this case I painted the soft tanker's lid along with them. I painted these in an over-all grey-toned version of black first using Flowquil paints, just the same as I like to paint tires--see here.   Afterward, I brought them up to black a bit more using a black glaze of Vallejo 950 Black-(You can see the difference on the boots back and front (above & below)

You can really make out the smoothness of the uniform compared to previously posted pictures--simply by continuing along the same pathway..........

I applied the raspberry piping on black shoulderboards that some tank & artillery outfits shared using Tamiya colours.

One of the most expensive figures I've ever bought--really should have been made into a new mould--not sold----really awful casting of the really terrific master by Master Yoshi. I always feel I've accomplished something when i like my end result better than the 'boxart'--in this case for me--no contest---I dont know who painted this one----and I almost gave up on the crummy example I had recieved!  Now I have something I really like-------

Hey Indy, nice job with her. I'm glad to see you got her casting "beard" shaved off... I think you did a fine job with her eyes.  You pay sticker price for her? About 25.50? I will go that distance for a well crafted and well cast figure. Sorry to hear you got a bit robbed in one of those aspects, but you succeeded in bringing her to life. Well done.

Nice work, and thanks for the walk through, she's almost as expensive as Brick Works 1/20 figures but the detail they have makes it worth it, Legend has some extremely detailed figures as well in 1/35 that run about $10 each..

Are the Oil Paints you're using the water soluble ones from WN?

I have about a dozen or so figures I need to get started on and am looking into trying the oil paint washes.

Tankers helmet or eastern front chic purse?  Nice job on a tough and spendy subject.  The results look well worth it.

Thanks alot for the comments you guys--happy you like her!

Steve~ Yeah I paid $24 from Cray--almost sent it back to him--but I thought I could save her. A friend said he 'd handled both the 1st and 2nd run of this casting and they we're all bad! So, it was as good as we could do for this figure. I have a set also from him thats really bad too from AC Models--we will see that later

Pawel~ Good to see ya buddy-!

BoBa~ Now That's what I want to hear! Thank you--I though I could do better that what I saw, but knew it was a good figure.

Andy~ True man--your a bud. There's not that many around here--whata gunna do?(look elsewhere?)

Div6~ No...I use regular W&N Winton oils for flesh and washes as well as Floquil enamel and Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics

Pat~ Heehee    yeah she was expensive--all woman areStick out tongue

~Here's one more from Platoon that I turned up---I saw this in a listing at Netmerchants (and no where else) and really liked him and want to make use of this figure in my Dio also. You can see he is similar (but different) to the first chap (and much more rare as this one wasn't on anyone else's list for this series.) He has a very similar coat & ushanka cap, but the face & stance, and belts are different enough. He came with a 2-piece notebook and looks a bit more like he should be nessessarily holding his than the other man,or he could just be talking with his hands a bit, right?

Sorry I didn't get any 'sprue shots' for this one, assembly was really easy, just the 2 arms and the head put on a pin, allowing movement/removal. Here he is with a very light coat of Tamiya White Fine Surface Primer.

I think he offers the same sort of challenges as the other one--and another chance to get that coat right

I think paired with the 1st figure it creates an even better scene and more convincing conversation--not to mention they're dressed for the same weather--I may still add the guy shielding his eyes as if he's standing to the side, listening..
~Anyways, I like to keep these figure projects always going , even when I've got a few other things on the benchso I don't get too rustyWink

Yes, I'd started him back along side 'Talia, but have jus now returned to work on 'em

Same process for our gent here as used on Natalia, though he looks rough here lacking further flesh-work

The eyes definatly add alot of life even if the guy has ghastly pallorSurprise

Here, I've gave him the once-over with blending oil-flesh-tones. I've found it about impossible to get this right in one sitting with oils--You simply have to get the project in the right direction and set it aside to dry and later(day or two!) return to continue on (based on whatever it ends up looking like after drying!) Sure takes ALOT of getting used to!

And his coat, painted in a variation of the other similar one

Thinking of keeping the fur-collar very dark on this--something I liked during the WIP of the other figure and so would want to use this time.

After some starck shading an over-all brown glaze serves to uinify the look

His head has been the result of many sittings work and is still needed some more deatil especially to the hair for example, but this guy has a good look in hand-

I also have a fe more Russians Im working on--more on these guys upcoming

More to come guys!

Jet~OK,,OK,,,thanks...but say sumfinConfused

~~Gents,
Some progress on Tanker #4

Time to add the head at least temporarily, to see what needs balancing.

I think I'm about done with the furs on hat & coat. I made an effort to do something I liked that complimented the similar 1st figure. I'm liking the older, dry look of his leaher, but I may still add a bit of highlights for interest.

Boots & belt we're done in variations of the orange-glaze-over-black/grey, and are a bit too glossy as shown here, These need a bit more work. Trousers are a basic Panzer grey based on Vallejo #867 Dark Bluegrey

The head is still positonable, and I find that until the exact placement in the Diorama is known, this is a must.

More to come!
Thanks for having a look and thanks for any comments----

Hi Andy

1st    Thanks!

2nd    I don't know

At this point Im building 3 different Russina Dio----so yeah more are coming

Here's another

Hey Guys~
Here's one more Ruskie Tank Crewman I've started working on :

I had cleaned up and assembled him quite some time ago, when I got him, thinking he was a pretty cool item ,even with the Warriors head, but Sorry I didn't save any pictures of the parts as they looked right OOB. There is however a nice review of this figure at Armorama by our friend Mark Bannerman.Wink

I thought I'd start with the tuff parts first and later paint in the simple uniform. Everything is done in a pretty consistant way with the other 4 figures and in fact the helmet was done when using greys on anothers' ushanka, and the boots done when glazing the last figures boots.
I think the stock head is fairly good, what do you think? It's a bit dfficult to use a replacement anyways due to the way it wedges in--but it seems to suit this guy to me. One thing I like is how he definately looks to be carrying a filled jerrycan from his lean

Thanx---see ya'll soon

Hi guys, this subject has been so super popular I thought I'd update it with a bit more progress

This Warriors figure is really a pretty fun one to paint

The Russian tanker cover-alls came in black, grey, khaki & navy blue as well as the mostly modelled medium blue--I thought I'd go with the grey, as the maintainance crews usually wore. The jumper is just blocked-in here with #867 Dark Bluegrey

One thing I like on this figure is that the regular tunic is visable under the cover-alls, at sleaves & collar. THis is blocked-in here with #924 Russian Unif. WWII

The leathers have recieved another 2 layers of the orange/brown glaze, in preperation of painting the jumpsuit, and are near done. I'm pretty happy with the boots.

Well guys, thanks for havin a look and let me know if you like how this one's comin along or if your happy to see the back of himSad

Dviv6~Thanks man--appreciated the post--- Yeah I like alot of Yoshi's figures---I almost bought that one in the wifebeater but my scene  has weather a bit too chilly [could have lost my PG rating]Zip it!

Pawel~Thanks my friend. Yeah, never seen that show! Any examples with subtitles? A bit dull for me---but, I noted there was an episode titled "Zaloga"Star

Adam - I don't know about the subtitles - I'm sure I've seen it with english subtitles on a TV channel called TV Polonia, but that probably doesn't help you any... Zaloga is "the crew" in Polish :-) That's one of the first episodes of the series where they complete the tank crew - then they get a brand new T-34 and go all the way down to Berlin. The whole series is about the Polish "Peoples Army" set up in the Soviet Union using Polish citizens that were there in 1943 (for example in the prison camps). The later episodes show a lot of "tanker's life", that's why I thought about it. The show also has female soldiers, so the association was almost obvious...

Remember, if you have something to translate from German, Polish or Russian, you can count on me!

Anyhow, I'm waiting for a next update from you, good luck and have a nice day

Adam, you have to see this movie 'A Woman in Berlin' if you haven't.  It was recommended by Netflix because I like to watch war movies.  And it was great... never saw so many Russian and their uniforms including tank crews and vehicles.  I thought it was pretty accurate in my opinion... those Russians did alot of bad things just like Germans did.

Pawel~ Thanks my friend--good to keep that in mind-Also  I can ask LiborBeer

Andy~Right on my man--I'll look for that 1Yes

Been at work off and on to finish this guys coat. Still at it working to add a bit of a mottle to the leather texture and have it blend in nicely. I don't think there's a quick way to get it done right

Barrowing a little tech. from Calvin Tan, I'm using Daler Rowney Sepia Ink as a pin wash and wash mixture to line seams, shadows and outline effects---as well as continue to work with my Vallejo leathers palete,
It's very easy to distirb any balance achieved and have to do alot of reworking, like I said I'm still in the middle, and lacking highlights (especially where rubbed off)Sad
Note also I've gave the boots a bit of a dusting and painted in the belts buckle and D-rings--these need some highs as well.

I think he at least looks a bit photogenic in actionBig Smile

I've finished up detailing Ivan here about all I'm going to do for now

I still haven't felt the need to add his mapbook--as I like his mid-conversation posture, especially for my scene.
I have added some highlights to his gloves, but left them as black
I added a minimal of highs to his coat, but mainly rhey didn't work well for me while trying to  keep the old 'broken-in' look I wanted for it.

The figure needs some weathering still---particularly some dusting of the shiny boots, and to his lower coat which may need a few touch-up s

I'll wait until I have the scene made and am sure of the groundwork palette before weathering this one as I've  really planned the 'look' when complete

Here he is with his brother, Tanker #1. For me they are finished differently enough while very much belonging together...but

.. really  It's all down to great quality sculpts / casts~

Thanks for all our interest and comments~~~~~~~~~
