Very nice! And yet, the box art is terrible compared to yours! The face is perfect, really great work!

Hey Indy, nice job with her. I'm glad to see you got her casting "beard" shaved off... I think you did a fine job with her eyes.  You pay sticker price for her? About 25.50? I will go that distance for a well crafted and well cast figure. Sorry to hear you got a bit robbed in one of those aspects, but you succeeded in bringing her to life. Well done.

At this point she looks about ready to be holding her tankers cap, so time to get that painted. A short shot of Floquil Grimy Black from a spraycan to primer/basecoat so far---

"Talia's lone bit of gear--the soft tanker's lid--Notice I painted it a bit high-contrast on the finished figure--these we're really uninteresting originally--like a piece of coal---black on black---

~Natalia Complete~

One of the last things I paint is the boots---I'm always rubbing them free of paint otherwise. In this case I painted the soft tanker's lid along with them. I painted these in an over-all grey-toned version of black first using Flowquil paints, just the same as I like to paint tires--see here.   Afterward, I brought them up to black a bit more using a black glaze of Vallejo 950 Black-(You can see the difference on the boots back and front (above & below)

You can really make out the smoothness of the uniform compared to previously posted pictures--simply by continuing along the same pathway..........

I applied the raspberry piping on black shoulderboards that some tank & artillery outfits shared using Tamiya colours.

One of the most expensive figures I've ever bought--really should have been made into a new mould--not sold----really awful casting of the really terrific master by Master Yoshi. I always feel I've accomplished something when i like my end result better than the 'boxart'--in this case for me--no contest---I dont know who painted this one----and I almost gave up on the crummy example I had recieved!  Now I have something I really like-------

~Natalia Developes~

OK...things start happening a bit faster at this point--not so far to go

I painted her gums in , but none showing past her soft pink lips looked best. In fact, I liked keeping the over-all look of her soft, and given the kind of detail of the face, I think that was best. The mouth was done using Vallejo #842 Glossy White, 926 Red,& 982 Cavalry Brown(Red!) I also sharpened the detail of 'Talia's hands, using familar fleshtones. I'm not really happy with the kit's hands but re-sculpting hands this size is past difficult, I did work on them quite a bit,and they are what they are.

I think that's all I want to do on the face, though she needs some touch-up to the neck, and some detail to the hair still. The uniform colour is simply blocked in using a very thin mix of Tamiya XF-49 Khaki--a colour I like very much for Russian uniforms. The Boots are base-coated with Floquil Weathered Black

Note how applying thin Tamya paint allows for transparent coverage, revealing areas to highlight pretty well--though very consistant results are difficult to obtain this way---The tunic here is done using one thin coat--the trousers got a second aapplication after allowing to dry briefly.

OK............so halfway through painting her uniform now

Since I like the Tamiya Khaki, (and I've done these uniforms with it before--but takes great patience!) but Vallejo is so much nicer to brush, I made a colour match using 880 Khaki Grey (this is a warmer, more brown colour) mixed with 916 Sand Yellow & Panzer Aces 304 Track Primer . For lights, more Sand and then White. For shadows the 304 and in extreme a bit of 950 Black

The holster was darkened with Vallejo 203 Umber Wash with some 042 Cam Bl Brn in it. The leathers need some more work. I  also need to add her rank insignia, and finish the boots

Still a little rough, like I said, not quite done with uniform highlights & lowlights

She's fairly cute,I think--as much as I ever hoped for!

HERE....I've gone through the basic steps, with oil paint flesh tone, allowing for drying in between

Ms. Tanker-Girl has some dark-circles no doubt,
but she's shaping up almost right off

So, I've added a few thin layers, just evening out the basic flesh tints on princess here

Certainly adding some basic hair colour  improves the look alot right there

I actually brought-up the brightness in the skintone--using a Vallejo highlight mix--which gave me some decent results, over the oils, at least on this one---

Princess 'Talia here is getting that certain Red Hair---base coated here with
Vallejo Hull red #985 (The pistol belt got the same basecoat, yes)

A bit more to do to bring her to life. Experience has taught me to take my time with these things to get any kind of good results---thanks for staying tuned---------------

Progress Continues~

Putting the eyes in is an absolute must-though some may try to tell you it's not needed on 1/35 scale due to scale effect--that only is meaningfull if you only look at your figures at arms length---and since we see them blown up 2-4 times here---that doesn't apply! I've found Mark Bannerman's Way with a tiny splinter a great way to start--but after getting some excellent brushes I find these much easier and more accurate. Using a new W&N series 7 #000 brush, I painted in the whites using some slightly off-white Testors Enamel.This way any thinner used to correct,wll not effect the Vallejo flesh lights.

Adding the pupils the next day put the twinkle in her eyes. I used Tamiya Nato Black, this way a little alcohol can be used to correct, without disturbing the whites, done with enamel
I may have something this time!

Obviously I need to paint in her mouth to get her to start to look human--and yes I have added some shading & highlights to the hair, but will save detailing it for later on.

OK...Back to the lovely (expensive!) nicely sculpted (awfully cast) Natalia from Yoshi.
Well, I've been doing some work from time to time, mostly some very fine sanding, and a little bit of re-sculpting , and re-priming, and I now think she's fit to paint.
.
.

.
Unlucky for me much of the work needed was to smooth the face and ponytails, but i think that went pretty well.
.

.
.

.

The uniform was moulded with some textures and I find that though more detail is usually nice, a smooth texture tends to promote better work in the end, especially when re-working is reqired. . Some smoothing was therefore done throughout, though it looks a bit inconsistant in these zooms--I may need to yet do more work, we'll see I guess.
.
.

.
I 've just begun to paint, using the same flesh base as the other figures--50/50 mixed with a new colour for me--Citadel Elf Flesh--seemed a bit fitting
.
.

.
.

.

I then applied two simple Burnt Sienna Oil washes, to try to bring up the tiny details
.

.
I found it an encouraging start

Indy's Back!!

I'll  take the opportunity to introduce the 3rd member of the party for this scene.Natalia, from Yoshi

We'll call her Tanker Girl

A real departure for one of my builds, I think she'll really give the scene that little spark. I love the artwork that went into this tiny (even for 1/35th) lady warrior, but I don't want to tell you what I paid for it(quite alot!) especially considering that the casting left ALOT to be desired

I did a good amount of clean-up before primer, and gave her a light misting so I could better see what needs some careful micro-sanding.

You can see I've already done a bit more work since primer--and the colour of the resin she arrived in. Only the boots we're seperate pieces, along with her soft tankers cap, which is later fit to her left hand. I'm sure I'll manage to get the figure cleaned-up and put to use-eventually
You can probably imagine the sort of chatty scene I have in mind now

more to come.......

Hello Adam!

Sorry to be so late for this one - your painting is great, as always! From what I understand Andy meant the commies are bad guys, so they also should be ugly, but after your painting they look good! Dang, that cold war propaganda!

Rail transport - that seems to be interesting! Here in Poland it is still practiced a lot. All Warsaw Pact countries were good at rail transport operations.

It's worth to read any book by Viktor Suvorov, it gives you a good feel about the soviet army. If you didn't already, I recommend it. Good luck with your project, have a nice day

~Ok... trousers & boots completed~

Boots painted entirely with 950 Black & 845 Sunny Skintone--but in totally different layers than the coats. Trousers painted in a consistant manner.

This chap had some challenging piping on his collar-tabs in red & yellow, but it barely shows up in the scale(Though I did get in there with the 0000!Sad)

This is likely "IT" for these two--I'll have another look tommarrow in the light of day, but I  think it's gone pretty well at least......still, I'll paint these same two again some day!

Thanks for joining me Gents &

SteveM

Looks really great Indy. Nice jackets. What's the dio idea behind this, or did I miss the story somewhere?

Steve~ Many thanks-- No--you didn't miss anything--I hadn't really gone into anything about the Dio here. For a long time 've had in mind to build a Russian Re-Supply Scene . Basically  a couple tank commanders are having a chat standing in front of thier T-70's loaded onto a railcar, some crewmen off-load  a few supplies to a standing truck.   I'm doing a test build currently of a brand new 20ton Russian Open Railcar and the WIP is at MIG Forum The kit-maker is my friend Libor--there's a News Blip  at Armorama about the upcoming company LZ Models with a link to his site. I have several more test-builds scheduled around more of his kits for the openning so that takes priority over the Dio building but likely a number of these builds will contribute to the scene.

~Andy~ Thanks (I guess) I'm not entirely sure what you mean Buddy

A bit of progress

Most of it to the fur collar and belts adorning this guy. I found that the best approach to a multi-colour fur like this isn't quite straightforward, but to have it be a bit jagged & broken when over-lapping the colours.

Vallejo colours used for the fur we're 872 Chocolate,913 Yellow Ocre, & 860 Med. Flesh.919 Foundation White over 950 Black. Before startinig on the fur collar, I sprayed the coat with  Krylon #1311 Matt Fixitive--which was less matt than the Vallejo finish and gave me a semi-satin glare to the leather, before going on to add the fur & the rest.

The other chap got a his shirt blocked-in  but I haven't gone back to detail the collar-tabs as of yet.

His trousers got based painted in 867  Dark Bluegrey (a favorite Panzer grey) and the other trouser was a mix of 880 Khaki & 914 green Ochre

The belts and harness on both figures we're based in near-black and painted with a rusty-orange glaze, a 822 Ger. Blk Brown wash and highlights made adding some  976 Buff to the glaze
Metallics we're added with  the 'ole Citadel Boltgun Metal .Wink

The boots have so far just been base-painted with one of the darker greys from the leathers pallete.

Back with more..............

Hi Guys~  I kept going with the 2nd jacket, alot like the 1st but a little darker:

Then I added two darker (near)-blacks to my pallete (same as listed above)

And later added a little  003 Glossy  White for some highights

The fur collar and gunbelt are just blocked-in with some Black

Nearly there I guess. Certainly takes a good deal of painting to get anywhere with leathers!

I'd like it to have that satin sheen--I'll need to add that  later.

~Steve~ Hey thanks Bro--I believe that coat is a soft dark brown hide--possibly dyed black when new--now worn to mostly brown leather.

This jacket was repro'd to look about like that :

~Andy~ hey Buddy--thanks---The idea was to lay in some basic contrast-then kind of dye the whole thing just to get the different look from fabrics--tinting the shadow along with the areas really taking the color.

~~~Update Incoming~~~                      (maybe tommarrow--this site is crawling slow at the mo)
Gosh, I Heart your posts... keeping them coming! Yes Never thought about applying darker paints before the lighter thinned coat of paint for the uniforms.  I did the opposite... base coat first then darker and lighter washes.  Gonna give it a shot next time...
~BoB~ Hey thanks my friend--& I wish you the best with that!
~Work's begun to leatherize the coats~
Again, not a real SBS here but showing a few steps--I began with a heavy over-all wash of Vallejo 867 Dark BlueGrey  just to show-up the folds clearly & afterward painted in the darkest shadows with 950 Black with a bit of of 927 Dark Flesh
Not too concerned about complete coverage--you can still see the overspray areas from the flesh areas I'd airbrushed in
The next step was an over-all brown glaze made of  596 glaze Medium, Matt Varnish, and a few drops of what else? 871 Leather Brown
Here's where I stopped treating both coats the same--I actually want a darker effect to the longer coat, so here on I've concentrated efforts on the other, again using Black lightened with dark Flesh, but switching to  845 Sunny Skintone for the lighter colours.
I think it's started looking a little leathery on the left, no? No bright  highlights  yet, but before I'm done I'll do some burnishing to get a satin effect if posssible
I replaced the heads temporarily to have a looky
I did make an attempt to employ a bit more facial highlght but I don't claim them finished there.
Ok, a little progress, I'm liking hat used look to his coat so far, plenty more to do and his buddy gets the blacker looking model.
What color do you suppose the jacket is on the fellow below?
