Plague Doctor
Posted by Justinryan215 on Monday, March 30, 2020 11:33 AM

I am working on this guy over in the 'Lockdown' group build...its a 1/24 scale Resin kit I picked up off of Etsy.

Here he is assembled and primed with Army Painter matte black

Almost finished painting....

Painting is just about complete...a few tweaks to get the OSL effect right:

Buildint the background to put the good doctor in context:

Test fit:

I felt this was apropriate considering the current events....

Lol love it Justin!

Haven't tried doing the highlighting glow effect from a lantern on a figure etc myself but I like where you're going with it.

I didnt realize before it was too late, but I neglected to clear coat the figure before I added the lighting effect.  I want to try to tone it down a little.  Hopefully I can without causing too much damage!

Very nice. I have one suggestion, I think that his boots would have mud on them and the bottom of his frock would be covered in dust/dirt.

Thanks all for the kind words!

This was my first time attempting 'Object Source Lighting', and I think it came out well!

Very apt and creepy, thanks to an episode of Supernatural knew what it was immediately. Before that had more associated it with the masks worn during  Venice carnivals.

JohnnyK;

Did you go to St.Joseph's Parochial School? My fourth Grade NUN looked like that too!

I believe as I remember the 'beak' was stuffed full of fragrant herbs and perfumes to cover up the smell of sickness and death.

Gamera is right....but it wasn't just to ward off the smell...the docs back then would actually use these masks, stuffed with their favorite herb blends (parsley, sage, rosemary and thymeeeee....) thinking they had the safest, medieval version of the N95 available at the time!

The walls and base are made of insulation foam board, commonly available in Lowe's, Home Depot in the states, and I'm sure other countries' version of those stores.  They come in various thicknesses, and sizes, ranging from 4x8 sheets to 3x3 'project boards'.

Check out the youtube channel 'Black Magic Crafts', he is mostly for miniature gaming (Warhammer, D&D, and such....), but alot of what he does can be scaled appropriately to scale model building.

Thanks!  I had never tried Object source lighting before....The feedback I have gotten tells me I hit it solid out of the park!

He looks like something from a nightmare. I'd hate to see that come a try to "cure" me. A little bloodletting shoud be in order.

You get a blood letting, leaches, or a Trepanning from that guy - you pick.

Thanks,

When this was first posted I had to Google to see what a plague doctor was. The wookiepedia article talks about them being hired by the local municipality and served poor and rich alike.  However rich were sometimes offered other snake oil like "cures" for an upcharge. They were certainly not medical doctors. Nostradamus was a notable plague doctor per the article.

Very interesting subject.
