AMT Space 1999 Eagle finished

Wow Doog, you are all over the map lately... tanks, cars, and now Sci Fi?

I was always more partial to UFO myself rather than Space 1999 of those shows...

Want me to snitch?    That you've turned over to the... uhm.. bright side? (Sci-fi is space, space = close to sun, right?)

Anyways, I hand around here a bit myself, mainly for the Warhammer bit...

Double-anyways, Like what you've done already, and the Germans looks like Russian wintersoldiers now.. Or,  those pilots in the show you mentioned...

Just a note, doog...only the top two "windows" are viewports. The bottom two are just part of the command module's design. Of course, if you want to go whole hog, I guess I could send you copies of my Eagle blueprints that include the interiors. Then again, you'll probably want to "borrow" one of my old Airfix Hawks as its companion piece.

Great start on the Eagle.  I have the Airfix, MPC and AMT kits, plus the Comet Miniatures' kit with launch pad.

Jagdwolf, I kinda figgered that out after I had congratulated myself for successfully drilling and carefully cutting out the two of them--and then discovering that I had had the damned capsule upside down! LOL! So I had to turn it over, drill out the correct two viewports, and plug the other two up.

Are the bottom ones flush, like they were molded? I may have to do some repairs there if that's the case.

You can't see a whole heck of a lot through the ports, so the rough representation of the interior will do. This is reallly just a fun build of a beloved aspect of my childhood memories!

You may wish to add the crossbeams on the lower section of the truss. There's actually a crude representation of the crossbeams on the roofs of the engine and cockpit modules, but none above the "pod".

I had the Airfix boxing of this kit many (30+) years ago. Wish I could get hold of one now...

I'm just going to build this pretty much OOB besides the cockpit mod. I'm going to rely on my finishing skills to bring it up to par. If I can score a second one, I will attempt a more accurate build according to that tutorial there!

We have the Blockbuster "mail the DVD to your house" service, and my wife and I got a couple of the CDs from the series about a year or so back.  Watched them for a trip down memory lane.  Our 18-year old son commented on the "chessy CGI" and I had to explain to him that those were actual scale models that some very talented craftsmen created.

Padakr--I actually have the first two box sets; man, there's a lot of memories in there! The effects were a but cheesy, but you gotta love those Eagles!

Thanks guys, I'm making some good progress on the engines and the capsule; more pics maybe tomorrow? 

Ok, so here's some of the work I'm doing on the engine. This is one of the most lacking of parts in the kit; after really looking at a slew of photos on the net, I was shamed into wanting to produce a more accurate representation. I am working strictly from photos from the internet sites, not from blueprints, so everything you're going to see is my own approximation of what seems to be the ductwork and tubing on these beautiful ships.

Here's what you start with in the kit.

Next, I removed the incorrect joining of the smaller balls, and using some Super Styrene, wrapped a .080 tube around the exterior of the engine nacelles (?). This stuff is fabulous for scratchbuilding; ordinary styrene, but it bends like solder without breaking! I picked up a small stash of it a year or so ago; alas, they've discontinued it, but I'm glad I had the perfect size for this application! 

I mounted the engine to the body, and using regular .080 styrene, started adding the bracing to the interior of the engines, I also connnected the two little--I'm going to call them fuel cells(?)--with tubing.

Next, added some inner braces. Thankfully, I have a good colllection of tweezer! This was all very tedious cut, insert, measure, file one millimetre, check fit, insert, glue....VERY tedious! You'll notice that the fuel cells had to be inserted and draped over the engine nacelles while I added the bracing; otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get them in later.

Next, the step that almost drove me crazy--I had to fix the tubing that cnnected the fuel cells to the two inner braces that I'd added. In this shot, you can see the cross bars that served as the mounting points.

Here you can see them mounted and another set of tubes added above and below the fuel cells.

You can see theprogress so far. Additional "caging: was added; some more braces above and below, forming a "U" around the interior. There's still some more tubes and ducts to be added, plus smaller details on the engine nacelles themselves.

I'm satisfied that, while maybe not 100% "correct", it at least addresses and dresses up one of the weakest parts of the kit. 

Now, I'm kicking myself for not having Dremeled-out those body cages.... Oh well; like I said--the NEXT one will get the "full treatment"! By the way, I DID also add the bracing to the long fuselage brace on the top. 

I won't be around this weekend, so there will not be an update til maybe Tuesday or so. Thanks for everyone's help and advice so far! Keep the comments and tips coming!

Here's an update for anyone still following this thread?

I've decided that I can't live with the weird suspension that they put on this model. It's "simplified" to say the least! This should have been done while the parts were separate, but as usual, I do things the hard way! LOL! I had to really think how the heck to achieve this while the pods were glued closed.

I started by cutting off the little boxes that are molded on, and completely inaccurate, by the way...

Then, I took a plug of .080 styrene, cut into a square slightly larger than the hole, and dropped it in.

Hold it up, and let it settle into the hole as a plug....

In order to hold the plug in place whil eI glued it, I drilled a small hole in the top, and pressed the drilll against the plug. The I flipped the model over, quickly applied cement, and then held the drill against the plug, sealing it tightly as it dried. Couldn't phtograph that, though--I woulda needed three hands!

Then, a separate plug of exactly the same size as the remaining square hole was shaped and dropped into the depression remaining there. I cut the second square plugjust slightly larger than the space it needed to fill, chamfered the edges a little bit, and with a liberal shot of Tenax R7, the plug sealed the hole tightly. It worked like a charm.

The holes were then plugged with styrene rod melted into the holes.

Then, the centers were located, and drilled out.

Tubes of .125 diameter were inserted, and then the legs of the "feet" were made with .080 rod--these fit into the .125 tubes. Now all I have to do is to figure out how to sit them all correctly after adding the landing strut details!

The egine bays are all finished too--I added 4 more strut coming off the corners of the cages there. It looks appropriately busy in there! 

More to come! Anyone with suggestions or comments, I'm always happy to hear from you!

Try ebay for decals I know there is a guy doing a set. Worst case try buying letraset, dont ask me the set numbers.

As for a year, one or two, the kit your working on is just offensive. Its more of a toy.

this is somebody trying to superdetail one of these.

As you may know the box art shows a rescue eagle, that only appeared in year one.

you would be better off buying a product enterprises eagle on ebay and repainting it yourself.

I make it 18mm from the base of the foot to the bottom of the shoulder pod. thats for an 11 inch model,

This may be of help with the main engines, its a match to the layout of one my friend photographed in the 70's when people wore flares and watched Space1999.

Oh my god---that guy's Eagle on the forums there-the one that he's accurizing from the ground up? WOW! AMAZING!!!!

I"m not too crazy or disappointed about having less than 100% accuracy on this one--this kit was really a "gift to myself", one that I wanted to build to take me back to my childhood. I just wanted to detail and correct some of the more egregious errors and simplifications, like the engines and the landing gear legs. I even thought about correcting the actual pads, but decided they look fine as they are.

Thansk for the measurement too--mine comes up just a shade short; actually, I measured the height of the kit legs before I cut them off, and it's shorter by about 2mm's from your measurement  I'm about to do n update here; you'll be able to see it; I think it looks pretty ok...

Well, I'm ready for painting--I think.....if anybody sees anything glaring here, shout it out before I commit!

Here's the finished cockpit before I sealed it up...

The finishing of the landing gear started with two parallel .040 strips glued to an .040 X .010 strip wrapped around the leg there....

And then two bars of .040 rods to support them.

I can't believe I got them all to sit evenly!

Then, I fashioned some springy things to go on them like shock absorbers or something....hey, I don't know how this stuff works!? I decided to keep the kit's "shoes"--the landing pads themselves.I'm just trying to make a decent representation out of this model, nnot necessarily use it in the remade series! LOL!

I added some mounting strips to the cockpit attachment, and to the tops of the girders joining the body to the upper girder...

Well, that's where I've taken this build so far, as far as correcting and detailing. I'm pretty happy with the improvements I've made in making it a decent representation of an Eagle.

Probably not a lot of comments because it's the Sci Fi section and most of the folks don't want others to know they lurk here on occasion.

Plus the Eagle is kinda off the beaten track for most folk that stick with SW, ST and mecha.

A good modeler will tackle every thing, not box themself into one subject.

Well, the SF kits I do build don't include SW or the politically correct Fed wimps from ST: only Klingon cruisers for me. Otherwise, my collection includes Babylon 5 (Starfury and Thunderbolt), Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, UFO, Space:1999, BattleTech (Clans only), CAV, and Gear Krieg.

Space 1999 was a cool show, even if it now looks a litttle dated on my DVDs that I have of the first two years! The one thing that always shines for me though is this ship! I love the Eagles!

I wonder if AMT will ever re-release this? I know there are some other Japanese models out there, but the ones I've seen are even worse than this one--the one has red plastic?!?!

Very nice work on the eagle! It's good to branch out and built subjects that aren't necessarily what you normally build. I go to all modeling forums, ships, armor, aircraft and get lots of valuable information. I have recently been lurking and posting in armor forums because being a noob to airbrushing and weathering, I felt that was a great place to go for information and it has been. In my current build of a klingon cruiser, I felt it was a "tank" in space LOL! So I am painting it accordingly. Thanks for all the valuable information and a shout out to all you armor modelers!

   Karl, I have a suggestion for your A/C build, its available in both 1/72(My Preferred scale) and 1/48th, The Horton HO(GO)229! Its simple, a flying wing. There is lots of info on the net, Its WWII Deutsch And it looks like something from BSG or B5.....

        So is the Eagle done yet? I was given the moonbase Alpha kit a few years back and I'm thinking about pulling it out also alonmg with my eagle. Lrt us know when its done and you start on an A/C!!!!!!!!!

Well, here's a small update; I'm basically finsihed with the base coat. I have primed, undercoated, and then base coated her, and now I'm stuck waiting on decals, as I want to do a very subtle weathering on this, kinda like I've seen on one of those sites that was applied to one of the actual 48' models used on the show.

So here's the model prined with Tamiya Fine White primer. This stuff is amazing. Fills in imperfections, and you could actually use it for a white base coat.

And then a Panzer Gray base coat--after this, I wanted to just put some Balkenkreuz on it and brap it over the Eastern Front! LOL!

Oh yeah; and I also made the serrated edges here on the "ear dimples" or whatever they are here. I used a heat tool to nick them. This is the base coat, applied not-quite-opaquely over the gray, to give some "aging" to the finish, and some depth-of-shadow.

And here'e a sample of the weathering I'm going to plan for it. This is really just the rudimentary first step; but you can see hints of the tones I'm going to use. Of course, I need the rest of the decals--the ones I've ordered allegedly contain the big red stripes, so I'm going to wait to get them, and the decide whether or not I want to decal them, or just use them as templates to paint them on. It's gonna be a bear to mask them effectively; I'll probably use bare metal foil to do that, if it comes down to that.

Well, like I said....I'm just waiting on those decals......come on, mail lady!........

I had most of the die cast eagles and even some of the UFO series stuff when I was young.

Gerry Andersons vision in modeling is right up there with Shep Payne, IMHO.

Just an update--got the "stickers"--I thought they were decals!--and they DON'T include the stripes for the rescue unit, so I'm in the process of masking and spraying them, but it's slow-going because I'm busy lately. 

caSSius, that's pretty cool that your relative was on the production crew!

Bill, no the primer doesn't go on overly thick, but it does fill scratches and blemishs pretty well. I think it's really formulated for auto modeling, and it gives a great base for applying paint. But I wouldn't use it on armor. Dunno why; would just think it unnecessary?

So far in my "career" I've done a boat, few planes, helicopters, tanks, figures, and a car or two.

Guess this forum's my final frontier! You start making that plane and I'll throw some sci-fi stuff together!

I do enjoy stopping in here though, always some cool ship/camo paterns and sweet weathering going on.

Thanks for continuing to follow this thread! I've been a bit busy, but I finally have something to show now.

I measured up and pencilled in lines delineating the red lines on the rescue pod; for anyone interested, the lines are demarked, in millimetres, at the following intervals from left to right: 

• 12
• 23
• 35
• 46
• 57
• 69
• 81
• 92

Ok, so not exactly mathematically precise, but it worked. It looks pretty even, no? I used both drafting tape and bare metal foil to mask it all up. A good night's work here, if you know anything about BMF!

Sprayed it up with Tamiya Flat Red...

In the next picture, you can see the results, after which I took an emery board and scuffed up the red sections a bit. I'm going for the look of an Eagle that may have been into an "LZ" somewhere where some hostile atmoshperic conditions may have existed, scuffing the finish from swirling planetary dust. You'll also notice the paint and the tiny piece of sponge that I used to add even more "chipping" to the finish.

I just mixed up the paints together to get some of-white shades, and dipped the sponge in, and dabbed it on. 

You can see the results here, as well as some acrylic patchy shading I've done on top just for visual interest. I still have to paint the blacks of the windows, and add the dec...I mean, er,the stickers... I hope they don't look cheesy!

Still a long way to go here...I'm in the process of painting in some more grays and different colors on the rest of the ship. Then to add the decals and stickers, andthen it will be on to the rest of final weathering. A grey wash, some more chips, some paint mapping.....so much to do yet. Thanks for any comments and continued critiques, guys!

*PS* I just scored a second AMT Eagle on eBayfor a mere $36.00! Not a bad deal for a hard-to-snag kit!

Nice to see that you went for the rescue there Karl, it will really pay off in the end because those red stripes will break up the white. Looks great, keep up the good work.

 How were you lucky enough to score this kit, I to grew up watching this show and always loved this ship, if you say you scored it on ebay then ill have to wait a while as they always go up to 50.00 or more. Maybe if i start going to our local swapmeet maybe. Anyway you are doing an awesome job on it as always.

Darren I got this kit off ebay, and the thing was, there were four other AMT ones available, and being bid on. I've rarely seen that many on the site at once, but that's probably how I got it relatively cheap! 

Darren, if you could, would you "edit" your message to me and delete the links to the redundant photos like I've done i my "Quote" of your message?? It makes it a lot harder for dial-up users to load this page up when the number of photos is unnecessarily doubled---they'll thank you for it!!! Just delete the links that look like [link/PHotobucket blahblhablha[link] and they'll be removed!

Very cool! Like the medical colors- nice job with the masking!!! And hey, if it got through the foil in a few places it makes it that much more real, even in the future of 1999 there was still some leakage on the war time medical transport paint jobs

Well, thank you to all who have folloewed this thread and cared enough to comment! Your encouragement and support in this "oddball build" for me was most appreciated! 

Well, I've got an Eagle in my collection! As I said, I was going for a well-used ship, one that would have seen its share of risky forays onto harsh, alien landscapes, where screaming winds whipped up the dust and beat up the finish. Here it is, all finished up!

A few words about the weathering processes. I started out by using that sponge to add a varying mix of white, gray, and tan. I dabbled a barely-noticeable random pattern all over the model, and then used some cut-outs from index cards to add some geometric designs in gray. 

The seams were all pin-washed with black/gray, and then a soft brush was used to add some light chips and drybrushing. Here's some pics!

Here you can see some of the sticker decals--they are rather thick, but can look ok with some flat coat. You can also see the weathering on the rescue pod...

The underside:

The little colored lines on top of the rail frame are my own interpretation of what seems to be a completely inconsistent pattern of color--nearly every reference photo I had of different Eagles seemed to have something different. I wanted an eye-catching, colorful look, so I went all out. THe stripes are a combo of painting and decals cut from old kits.

The rear...the engines were painted in Tamiya Flat Aluminum, and the Dark Copper was airbrushed over the ends, and then Black over that.The lines were painted on fr the most part. The orangey rectangles are from the stickers sheet.

Everything may not be 100% accurate, but I read on a site some words from an actual technician who helped build and maintain the real Eagle models, and he said that the set Eagles were always being refurbished, taken apart and put back together, and that sometimes the lahding pods would wind up swapped, and different parts would be different from time to time, so I figured that in all honesty, the markingsI used may be a liittle "colorful", but I think it looks eye-catching! ???

I like all the color and weathering, nothing more boring to look as than a factory fresh paint job.

Having built this as a kid (30-something years ago) I can really appreciate the extra work you put into this one to bring it up to where it is.

How big is the finished model, I had a toy one as a kid, it was about 3 feet long.

So this is what you've been up to all weekend! Nice finish to a very cool kit, looks well worn, very good paint burn off/metallic look on the engines

I can juuuust make out the pilots- good call sticking them in there just the right amount of fine detail to really nail this build.

Here;s the final display case--I cut out the logos from the box and sticky-taped them to the insides. The mirror finish lets you see the underside.

Great work Karl! The finish is truly "doog-worthy" and makes this aged kit stand out. I like your display case too...IMO the 'glass and mirror' design-style aligns itself with futuristic motifs and therefore adds to the presentation.

I was looking at my eagle yesterday.

I was setting up to rebuild the forward and aft sections of the passenger module as well as the engine assembly plumbing.

However I think I will follow doogs steps insted and go more OTB with it.

Doog, what did you think of the decals that you ordered for you eagle?

Russianfist--I got the decals from eBay. They're actually NOT "decals"--they're "stickers" that you have to cut out yourself--which can be a PITA, to be honest, but they're the only game in town as far as I could tell. They go on a bit thick, but I think they look ok, don't you? Otherwise, you'd have to print your own. 

There IS a guy who sells actual decals that he prints out--the link is in this thread, I think? But when I went to his website, it said he was not acceptingorders until he had printed out and filled all his back orders--that sounded like trouble to me, so I went with the stickers.

Also, IF and I repeat IF the sales of the other space 1999 kits are sufficient, Round 2 might consider doing a 22" Eagle kit in injection styrene that is accurately based on the hero 44" Eagle. There might be a few slight cheats to make it "kitable" but they would keep all of the proportions and major details as close to 100% accurate as metal tooling will allow. Keep in mind, this is not set in stone. The tooling would cost a bundle, and the license needs to pay for itself, SO, .....and I want to stress that nothing is guaranteed.... only if you guys do your part in helping the re-pops sell well first would they CONSIDER doing the 22" model. So, if you want this to happen we must all do our part to re-spark interest in the old kits, even that Alien one. As for the Hawk, well, it sounds like Airfix might have the tool for that one. Round 2 said they will be looking into that to see what the possibilities might be.

Would it be too much to ask you to send me a small commission on your future work? Seriously, I'll "forget the whole thing" buddy! 

Lastly--it's simply common courtesy on this forum to comment or at least acknowledge a modeler's work if you post on their posts. I did a lot of work correcting and modifying this model, and have left the posts and photos here as a guide and inspiration to other modelers. If it makes me "egotistical": to at least expect a nod to the contribution and time that I've made here and to the model that I have produced----especially when you're opportunistically using my post here to advertise your products and services--, then you go right ahead and brand me that. James. I don't have a problem with that.

Listen, man--you do nice work on your models on your site. And it's nice to know that the Eagle is going to be produced again. I'm sure that will make a lot of people happy, me included--especially if it's a more detailed and accurate version than the AMT version. But it would have been nice to at least get a nod to the work I did here after you posted your work and services in my thread without so much as a word of recognition of my work.Something tells me you'd feel the same way were the situation reversed, James. The least you could do would be to stop denying that.

Wow Karl- another well-done piece from your workbench. Thanks for another toot on mods and corrections. I'm yet another of the masses who had this kit as a kid; I love the 'Eagle.'

I saw a few episodes of the show when it was airing but never became a huge fan. Maybe I'll have to check it out again on DVD after I get through my nostalgia phase with 'Emergency'

I was a little surprised to see this old thread get resurrected, as this ship was finished quite a while ago., I've still got a second AMT one in the stash, and want to finish it in all-white one day--but I"m bummed as to how I would make that engine cage again without the bendable styrene that made that such an easy mod. They discontinued that product, the last I heard.

I also got two box sets of Space 1999 and relived the first two years--still some pretty good plots and good story writing, but the special effects were pretty primitive and the monsters were frankly ridiculous for the most part, And oh that fashion.....yikes!

I remember seeing this great build back in the Fall 2012 FSM online gallery. Having built a couple of Eagles myself, I know what an absoulte DOG that old AMT/Airfix/MPC Eagle kit is to work with. So anytime someone can do something as impressive as this it should be applauded repeatedly!

Yes, the AMT kit surely has its problems--mostly the engine area. It's so simplified as to be off-putting, but it can be detailed with a fair amount of effort. Hopefully a newer kit will address this?
