1/100 MG Kampfer **High Gloss**
Posted by Mercedesman on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 9:17 PM
So I enjoyed my Hi-Nu build so much I decided to take another crack at a mobile suit I always LOVED - the MG Kampfer.  This time I decided to go all out - beads, balls, mechaskunk, g-option parts, etc... The color will be gloss blue that came factory for the Kampfer (I may build many other versions of this awesome mobile suit in the future)

In order to get the color right I experimented with a number of different mixes.  I finally settled on Tamiya Dark Blue with Tamiya Mica Blue mix.  Here is the progress:

The head:

Straight forward build, mechaskunk beads, g-option eye and mechaskunk eye aluminum eye socket.  Mechaskunk warning decals - ventilation holes drilled out:

(antenna not all the way in yet - but shaved to be thinner and more blade-like)

When you are going for glossy paint finish - any mistakes in the body work or primer shows - so the panels are washed, scrubbed, sanded with wet/dry 1200 grit, primed, sanded again until mirror-like finish and paint is applied in layers, allowing a build up and some sanding sessions between coats.  Two coats of Model Master super gloss clear applied at the end to a shiny shiny finish - this thing is like a jewel in real life

Here is the most complicated part of the Kampfer - the shoulder.  The shoulder comes in three different sections as you know, and leaves a ghastly seam in the middle of the shoulder that took literally two days of sanding, priming, sanding, priming, puttying, repeat lol. Here is how it came out - I am pretty pleased with the results:

no seam line.  As you can tell from the rounded spike holes, I will be replacing kit units with aluminum spikes from Model Up - they are two piece affairs with the base being left in natural aluminum and the actual spikes painted in the matching color.  I will also be using metal screws from mechaskunk in the drilled wholes.  Of Course I will also be using metal thrusters from a variety of sources.

Next up are arm bits - I drilled all the holes out and will be using a metal screen behind the holes.  I will also be using metal screws from mechaskunk - boy those things look nice when they are on and it reminds me that i need to order more haha

Finally the rear thruster covers - they get the same treatment

Suggestions and comments are ALWAYS welcomed!

I was looking at those eyes online.  How hard are they to put in, and how do you do it?  Also, how do you put in the spikes for the shoulders?  I love the metal spikes on monoeye kits.  Your color is gorgeous and I cant wait to see the rest of this baby.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.

Everything is super easy.

The eye is basically an MV type lens commonly used my model railroad builders to simulate non-working lights.  Its a plastic lens, that is shaped in a dome - very realistic when backed by the chrome or metal paint/part.  The metal eye socket is perfectly shaped for this particular size lens - they sell two different standard mecha sizes.  Once assembled together the entire eye assembly simply superglued instead of the kit part - no problems.

As for the metal spikes there are MANY options and styles of these, short, medium, long, detachable base or molded base.  Lookat G-Option, Model Up or Mechaskunk parts for examples -simply drilled an appropriate sized hole and insert the spike.

I will updated this tomorrow and show you the spikes close up

I have one of these, its sitting 95% complete, just have to finish the upper left leg and its finished, but the seams are hell, and I dunno if I have the right color of paint for it anymore... its such an amazing kit though, yours look quite good gloss.

the upper legs are going to be quite a challenge - you are right.  They have a lot of visible seamline - that only becomes visible when you put on the armor around the completed parts - i going to have to mask everything very very carefully there.

You've got the colour nailed! What ratio of those two paints did you use?

30% dark blue and 30% mica - decanted from a spray can and 40% thinner.  I apply it over a dark blue base - which deepens the color I think (or at least I hope lol)

quick update - shoulder is done - the spikes are g-option metal items (they look MUCH better than the kit spikes). The thrusters are a mixture of model up and mechaskunk items - painted clear orange. Decals are mechaskunk warning labels.

Oh, very nice! I like the way the markings came out.

My Kampfer build stalled a while back, I very much appreciate the insight into aftermarket parts.

Here is another quick update - I have been having so much fun building this one that progress comes fast hehe

The other shoulder - different, smaller thrusters, screws and decals all from mechaskunk -Thanks Rob!  (I just saw a spec of dust int he first photo  :( Going to need to polish it out.

Now moving on to arms - started to drill out holes in the armor

also started to add gunpla pla plate bits and koto detail

got done with the under-neck part - same treatment. I was going to replace the hoses with snake chain, but the chain I orderedfrom mechaskunk was not big enough - I didnt realize the size

the first pic, see the decal with the circle, put a bit more decal softener onto that, you can see a tiny bit of an edge.

You know what I did, for the neck piece you have there, I cut those molded wires out of the side and put in the mecha skunk snake chain.  I also replaced the chain around the waste with ugly tube surrounded by wire mech chain

yours looks nice - is that an MG?

As for the snake chain - thats what I thought I was going to do - but I got the wrong size from mechaskunk - too thin - designed for an HG 1/144 kit - so I didnt use it.

For energy cable I have a woven metallic braid material I am going to use on it already.  But your metal mesh looks nice - are you going to paint it?

Foot Vernier M, hmm? I love those things.

the amount of work you put into the gloss shows. You should show it off on the automotive forum. Cool [8D]

My fiance works for Toyota and this looks like something I'd see in her showroom - great work. BTW don't worry about the camera work it's fine.

Oh man, that is looking nice.

Would it be too much to ask for a list of the specific parts you used to detail this kit? I'd love to use some of those verniers on mine, and the spikes on the shoulders are awesome too.

No problem - lucky for you ALL of the parts I used on this build were from one source:

www.mechaskunk.com

Hope that helps ;)

the verniers they sell on mechaskunk are specificly designed for the Kaempfer.  They may fit on other kits but they werent designed to be universal.

by the way, looks freaking amazing.

thanks!  Smeagol is right - there are sets for the Kampfer (whichis what I am using) but the baffles fit other mecha as well - there really four sizes to look at and depending on the type of finish you want you can mix and match them.

I wish they had sets for Sinanju and other new kits too.  I highly recommend mechaskunk - Fulcy is great to deal with - he gets back to you right away and is always super helpful!

I agree, I asked him a question once.  It was a stupid one that I found the answer to ten minutes later by actually looking at the site.  He had already emailed me back.  Still haven't bought anything because I'm not ready to do any kits that detailed yet, but I will be going there for the parts.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.

Pro Tip : Buy atleast one set of snake chains, mesh chains, and ugly tube.  They are some insainley indispensable materials for making mods to parts, especially to like Zakus and such, and they look WONDERFUL.  See below
