EOI: Anyone for a Macross Group Build?
Posted by Phil_H on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 8:10 AM

It seems there's more than a few Macross fans here, so I'm wondering if there's enough interest to get a build happening.

So what do you say people?

 *****************

Timeframe: (Tentative)

20 September 2010 to 20 September 2011

Guidelines:

  • Kit may come from any series/movie in the Macross Universe
  • Includes Zentradi mechs and "real world" aircraft such as the F-14 and Mig-29 as seen in Macross Zero
  • Colour schemes are open but must include Macross markings (no Battletech/Mechwarrior crossovers please)

What would be the restrictions? Would non-macross schemes and markings be ok? I'd like to build a VF-1D as a what-if.

Well, at this stage I'm just trying to gauge the level of interest in doing a GB.

My own personal preference would be for as original Macross as possible because allowing alternate schemes would open it up to the Battletech/Mechwarrior adaptations.

It would make little sense calling it a "Macross" GB if everyone wanted to do alternates and  BT/MW stuff. Having said that, there's a number of the Hasegawa Valk kits with non-original "Macross Inspired/tribute" markings.

I am something of a Macross purist though and it's just my own personal preference - anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Hello Phil H, I am not a Macross builder, but like you I am into Sci-Fi and glad to see another GB starting up in this field of the Hobby World.  I hope you success and if there is anything I can do to be of help, feel free to ask.  GMAlien

Hmm...

I am committed to too many GB's all ready. It would help to know what a Macross is?? Can you post some pictures or links?

Might be interested if I can pick up the upcoming Wave kit.

Of course Zentraedi will be allowed too, not so?

How does one begin to describe Macross? .....

Macross is a Japanese anime franchise, beginning with an initial series in the early 80's. It now spans about 5 series/miniseries and 2 or 3 movies (yes, I've lost count).

For the quick and simple version, think space-based soap opera, giant aliens, a base ship (the Macross) 1.2km's long which somehow holds a city of 56,000 on board,  a fighter plane resembling an F-14 that transforms int o a "robot" form and various non-transforming mechs and you get the idea.

Quick and Dirty explanation.

Macross = Robotech Season 1(not the other seasons) and original series was butchered but the hardware is the same.

Later Macross series have more streamlined  and sleeker looks.

Absolutely! It wouldn't be Macross without them.

That's if you can find any kits. They're hard to come by and expensive when you find them, but if you can, that would be great. Smile

Phil H.

I got one of the 1/100 Glaug reissues, Male and female Zentraedi Suit. Valkyries are fine but I prefer to build a Destroid or Zentraedi. Hence why I am waiting for the Wave 1/72 Kit.

Excellent. Good to see some love for the Zenrtadi and Destroid kits. Smile

LMAO - I just had a look on Ebay - someone's asking $249.00 (each) for the Revell boxed SDF-1 kits (both modes). Dream on.

I'm in. I've been looking for an excuse to buy and build a Hasegawa 1/72 Valkyrie - I thank you for providing that excuse.

Hey CJ,

You'll love the Hasegawa Valk. If you can handle an aircraft kit, you can do this one easily. One thing to note is that it's fairly modular and it will be a "paint and decals in sub-assemblies as you go" thing.

It looks like we've got a few starters, so maybe it's time to firm up the guidelines, like timeframe and other restrictions if any.

Will custom paint schemes like camo be acceptable for destroids as long as Macross Unit-markings & supplied  details are used?

I'm thinking  yes, as Hasegawa is pushing out Valks with alternate colour schemes to keep the line fresh, but retaining the Macross/UN Spacy markings.

As mentioned earlier, I'd prefer not to cross over into Battletech/Mechwarrior territory though, even if it restricts group participation.

If I recall correctly, the previous Macross GB ('05/'06) allowed alternate colour schemes.

I'm planning on a SDF-1 with toned down "real-world" colours, not the cartoonish almost-white/bright blue/bright red colours.

Agree with not going into the Battletech/Mechwarrior range, said that not much macross mecha was used in the unseen mechs. Mostly Dougram, Crusher Joe, etc.

Surprised few Mospeada or Southern Cross was in the original battletech designs.

Wonder if someone will do a MinMay Valkyrie?

If you look ar it from another perspective, though they only made up a small proportion  of the total, IIRC, all the  Destroids and the Valkyries were "crossed over", as was the Glaug. Only a small number of Macross mechs weren't crossed over.

But we are a little off-topic here

Mmm... This is building some momentum up. I could catch up with you guys later this year with a pure VF-1J.

Hi Steelsnail,

You're more than welcome to jump in later, as I'm thinking about at least a 12 month run on this one (I'm a slow builder Embarrassed ) I hope you can understand the reasoning behind wanting to restrict "non-Macross" schemes.

Cheers,

Phil

Would the old Robotech Revell kits count?

I would think they would be ok as long as the kit is of a Macross Mecha.

Revell Robotech kits use mecha from a range of anime.

The kits are simple reboxes of Japanese kits with english instructions.

What you got in mind?

Would the old Robotech Revell kits count?

Many of the Revell Robotech boxings are Macross based, but some are not.

Of the larger boxings:

Robotech "Changers":
Vexar = Imai 1/72 VF-1S Valkyrie
Axoid = Imai 1/72 VF-1J Valkyrie
Orbot = Imai 1/72 VF-1D Valkyrie
(these three are "transformable")

Robotech
Space Fortress SDF-1 = Imai 1/5000 SDF-1 Cruiser mode
Attack Fortress SDF-1 = Arii 1/5000  "Storm Attacker" SDF-1
Robotech Factory = 2x 1/100 Imai(?) "factory" modules with armoured battroid and Destroid Tomahawk mechs

All of the above are Macross. In the Revell Robotech line, there are a number of smaller 1/100 and 1/170 kits (sometimes offered as 2-in-1's) which fall under Macross.

As mentioned, there are others which originate from other series, so let us know what you have and we can tell you if it fits or not. Smile

With a 12-month timeframe being mentioned, I'm in.  I've been prioritizing some of the kits I started and never finished over the years as projects and holding back on new projects, but this would be worth making an exception.  I promise my contribution to the GB won't be one of the already started projects ( like the trainer lineup, Queadlunn, Battlepod, Quel Quallie, Zentran ships, "Couple that Slays Together" Super Valks, SDF-1, destroid Tomahawk, or VF-27 ) already in progress.

Just a tip for anyone considering the Revell Changers kits: if you're not familiar with the show and looking to make those canon, the paint schemes in Revell's instructions are changed to varying degrees.  Vexar has slight modifications from the original VF-1S while the other 2 are almost completely off.

So, on those restrictions, are we looking at including the sequel series ( Plus, 7, Zero, Frontier ) or just the original?

Welcome aboard Kugai, the more the merrier.

I'm thinking of perhaps a md-September start so people with projects already underway have time to finish them before starting on something else and so that those who need to find a kit to build have tome to do so.

Jusr another note re the Robotech Changers (and the Imai/Bandai original boxings). If you want the result to be "transformable" when finished, they require some patience and care during assembly. Careful cement work is the key. Too much or wayward cement will render joints immovable. Not enough and it will fall apart.

I'm thinking it will be open to the entire Macross Universe (Macroverse?) and I'm familiar with the Original series, Macross Plus and Frontier and DYRL. Not so familiar with M2 or M7 though. It's interesting that the Hasegawa VF-1' kits are essentially the "movie version" with different markings for the TV versions.

Quick question.

IIRC, the Revell changer kits included the original decals but had a different colour scheme.

If that is so than the can be build according to the rules established so far.

 Am I wrong there.

Been Decades since I last saw one of those kits.

Yep, they do contain the original decals.

I think the rules that have been established so far means that  the (ugly) Revell "in-box" schemes would be permissible as long as the Macross markings are used.

If one had one of those releases sitting around waiting to be built, I'd say go for it but I wouldn;'t go out of my way looking for one just to build - I've seen some pretty crazy asking prices for these on EBay. Indifferent

Agreed one of the Bandai(IMAI) reissues would be better and you don't have to deal wIth 20+yr old decals either.

Got my Wave 1/72 Tomahawks pre-ordered, should grace my desk a few days after release.

Will also be doing the Male Zentraedi Suit and maybe a Catapult if I can find one.
