Oh! My Goddess (Ah! Good day)
Posted by Voidses on Thursday, November 4, 2010 1:53 PM

This is Verdandi from the manga Oh! My Goddess. I picked up the kit from e2046 by recommendation from members of this forum a few years ago. She's straight OOB exept that I added a "bang". It might not suit her that well but I like it and intend to keep it. Makes her look cute.

Wish me luck, I'v newer painted anything similar before.

I'll update when there's something to show.

Nice looking model, the sculpting looks excellent. Did not know what you ment by "bang" and sat looking at the pics for a gun or something that would go bang until i noticed the "hair extension". Looking forward to seeing the painted product

Nice Figure but not an easy kit to assemble nor paint for the newcomer.

Hope the it is just pinned and not glued yet as youy will need to have it in parts for finishing it.

See a ton of left over gaps and surface flaws that needs to be fixed would reckon a Year+ for an experienced modeler to get this to contest standards.

Said that to be expected from a recast(unauthorized pirate copy).

Feel free to ask away if you got questions.

Voidses, I assume that "Verdandi" must be the german name for the character, in english its Belldandy and the Japanese is Berudandi with the R rolled to be almost an L. While I really enjoy Ah! My Goddess I really much more enjoy Kosuke Fujishima's other work from the same period, Your're Under Arrest.

Have fun with it.

Have to agree with andrew.

Verdandi is based on a poor romanisation of the Characters name my guess is they still the system that Japan dropped some decades ago.

Never really got into AMG, Sailor Moon, etc always prefered Kia Asamiya's work(Silent Moebius, G.T.S., etc) or Miason Ikoku, Galaxy Fraeulein, Tokimeki Memorial, etc.

BTW, what scale is the kit. I would reckon 1/6 from the pics.

She's glued solid in every way. Don't worry I know what I'm doing Propeller Die klebstoff ist sehr gut.

The primer is on and curing at the moment, There's still a few blemishes that need my attention but after that it's full speed ahead. I can't say I'm looking forward to painting all the white but someone gotta do it right?

OH! before I forget I measured her and she's 15cm tall (excluding base). That would be a scale of ca 1/12?

Regarding her name, Fujishima took the name from norse mythology. In the US they just spelled it as the japanes prounounce it and the japanese can't prounounce 'V' that well or something. Thus they say Belldani (sort of).

The real name is Verdandi and she's one of three norn "goddess" from norse mythology. I'm not from Germany so I can't say what's she's called over there. Actually I'm from Scandinavia so I should know how to pronounce it Cool

I'll just do my best and we'll see how it goes

Hey Voidses!  Long time no see pal.  Thats one heck of a project you took upon yourself.

I suggest giving a look at, if you don't know it already, http://codyscoop.com/howto.html  He gives a good tutorial under how to about figures, and he does nice work.  I have used his how tos in one way or another for so many projects.

It seems we both decided to jump into this kind of kit, I got myself a 1/6th scale Naussica but its in Vinyl, for my birthday.  Were still gonna have the same painting challenges and such, ill be watching this closely to see what you do.

I'v just started the painting process and here's my general plan:

Paint wings and dress white. Paint the skin+shadows etc.. Paint "additional" dress colors. Paint the hair and jewlery. Add shadow+highlight to dress, hair and wings. Paint the eyes.

Currently I'm painting the first layer of white, It'll take at least two layers to get full coverage . Why start with the white? Well because the way she's built up It's more convenient to get the large whit areas painted first. I havn't figured out how to get adequately light on the model while taking fotos, hence no pics on the progress, I'll think something out.

I'm using enamels and oils exclusively on her. Drawback is the drying time but I really like to work with these kinds of paints. I might sneak in a few acrylics along the way though.

When the paint dry I think I'll consult my refernces Wink

@Smeagol Yes I'm back, lots of things have happend. Basicly I managed to get a life anp POF! My spare time was gone :P Working 8h a day and studying was somewhat tough, now I'm back at just studying and I'v got enough spare time to both play video games, read books and build models. Miss working though, It was quite fun. I'v seen the Naussica model you'r working on but I didn't reply Embarrassed Looks like a nice figure. And the movie is really good too. A few weeks ago I attended a Studio Ghibli marathon. We saw all 17 movies over a 48h period. It's a yearly tradition, quite neat actually Yes

I'v seen that homepage before, I migh check it out when I'm about to paint the eyes . It looks like a good "how to" source.

Its ok about the not responding thing, its not a WIP Yet, once my birthday comes around it might be though.

A studio Ghibli marathon, thats something, Id love to attend, I have seen MOST.  I havent seen his oldest stuff like Lupin 3, but I have seen most.  I think the guys here would really enjoy Poco Roso, actually someone here has him as his avatar, and I have Totoro on my iPod I LOVE  that movie.

That is quite the Ah my goddess collection you have there, jebus, its bigger then my gundam collection, i dont have any gundam manga except for the one prequil gundam wing novel.  I DO have the entire Yotsuba&! collection though.

Also, its good to have you back

I managed to get a little paint on the model yesterday. Starting with a basecoat of humbrol white enamel I painted my top layer with oil paint.

The enamel basecoat.

Using brushes of different sizes I painted slightly thinned  titanium white as my topcoat.

The brushes I used, "pick your choice sir"

After a few hours of drying most of the "wet sheen" had subsided and this is how it looks at the moment.

Unfortunately as you can see, the finish isn't flawless (guess I need more training)

The wings are yet to recive their final layer of paint, for some reason the enamel base cracked in a few places. To let them dry completely I'v decided to complete the rest of the model first before adressing the problem.

Next up will be the skin and the middle piece of her dress. But first of all I think I might have to wait a few days for the oils to dry a little.

hello! I'm sorry I havn't posted any updates as of late.

All the main colors are on the model! The oils tok soooo long to dry I thought this day would newer come XD

I must confess this is my crapiest model in a long time, the finish turned out crude. But I'm not the guy to give up on what I start.

The skin-tone is a mix of white, pink, yellow and brown oils.

I used cobolt blue for the dress. And humbrol enamel to paint the hair and a few accessories. I'v added a few highlight to the hair using oils.

This will problaby be the last update until sometime in february. Before I start to add shadows this model need to dry a couple of weeks. After that it's christmas and when I'm back after the holidays I have my hands full with work and school.

And in January I'm off to Japan! I'll be staying one month in Toky and study japanese Yes

Yes progress has ben made but it was painfully slow, I thought my "modelerbuilder-patience" could take waiting a few days/week between colors, let's just say I hit my limit...

I'll be sure to buy lots of unnecessary anime/game-merchendise when I'm over in Tokyo, like posters and figures. I won't however look for anything "Gundam" Surprise  I newer liked meacha-anime and Gundam is no exeption.

I'll do my best with the figure, no promises other than I'll finish it somehow somewhen.

Where in Tokyo will you be visiting?  I know of a good hobby shop just across the street from Tokyo station, and a few in Akiba.

I'm back from the land of rising sun and this project is almost done. I'v added shadows and highlights, painted the base. And today I did the eyes!

I painted them all in one go using artists oils and enamel, took me less than 1h. But god was that time exhausting. I was constantly scared to death I would screw things up and almost did a few times. After a little while I goty this slight tremble on my hands that I'm not used to. Made painting way harder. I probably got it because I was nervous. Despite all this and considering it was my first try it turned out better than expected. In the picture you can quite easily see the crude finish, my skill with a brush is not very refined Crying

More to come...

Ah! Peorth, I kinda like her. Don't really dig her clothes but she's a nice caracter otherwise. Showing too much is not proper imo. Guess my friends don't call me conservative without a reason XD Do you have any pics of the model?

I'v got a open question. Generally, should  the base be painted  in a flat sheen or a glosscoat ?

If things go like planned Verdandi will probably be ready next week.

But Dragon Age2 was released today so we'll see...

I have actually only taken this picture of it:

Photobucket

Did her probably in 1997, one of few things that i have  painted with acrylics.

If i don't mind only used a lifecolor primer as base (but can be i not used primer, too time for exact mind), i use ever flat bases.

For the rest only shaded the model with various mix of color like normal figure painting .

The kit if not in error was from Elfin 1/6, vinyl kit.

After her (and a helldiver from patlabor) never built others vinyl kit, rarely in italy.

On the japan fan online store you can found tons of action figures or others type of finished anime figures, but not kits Crying

I hope to see Belldandy (even onto italy comics of oh! my goddess translate her name)

finished Big Smile

A few reason for that but for starters the time for anime resin & vinyl kits is gone, no longer produced outside events, etc.

Few reasons, action figures took over and became price-wise competitive,  another many manufacturers gave up production since piraters of their kits(E2046, Hobbyfan, Animebox, Elfin/Sol/Phantom) flooded the market with cheap copies.

This been going on for a long time so not much 2nd-hand unbuild stock of originals out there.

There are still a few new kits produced(like the HLJ kits), etc but for the most parts you will need to either go online to places like Mandarake, Yahoo/japan, etc to get older kits or get stuck with pirated copies. Or order from the producer directly but many are wary of overseas customers as they are worried about selling to a Pirate.

Also many shows like Belldandy, etc are really old now, know many people that are into the anime but it is older than them. ;)

HTH.

P.S.: Base flat or gloss depends on the base design and how it interacts with the figure, IMHO.

@ bsyamato that is a nice figure of Peorth you got there! Good work getting that result with acrylics,  me like :D

this kit is from E2046 lol Whistling I think I'll let the base be flat for now, like you said Mad-Modeler it might distract from the model if the base is all shiny.

Ah! My Goddess is not forgotten. Just a few years ago they made Flight of Fancy and this year they'r making  new anime episodes of the series. I really like the 5episode OAV and the first manga volumes, but the following series/manga I mostly follow  just because I'm a little in love with Verdandi XD

Today was a good day. School was fun, I had the oportunity to learn the basics of walking with low vision patients. My new cosplay costume arrived with the mail one week ahead of schedule.

And I managed to add the last strokes of paint to Verdandi-sama.

I'm quite proud I managed to complete this project. It's outside my comfortzone and was at the same time both revarding, fun and exhausting. It could have been better, it could have been a lot worse.

Here's a few teaser photos, I'll take "real" photos when I find the time.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it!

I'm sorry to say my attempts at taking photos has failed miserably, can't seem to get the lighting right. Need to buy a new lamp Boo Hoo I'll get to it asap but don't hold your breath.

By the way, any suggestions 'how to' photograph bigger models?

@Watchmann I'll be cosplaying Nodoka Manabe from K-ON. The costume is supposed to be tailored to fit my measurements but is quite wide around the waist. Perhaps I should have someone make it tighter? I won't have the skirt that short btw (probably). It will be hillarious, I don't look like her a bit Propeller The scale is 1.25/1.

Otaku!? haha, yeah maybe I am. Like yesterday when I played the first Killzone start to finish during the evening/night. Mostly I'm just a regular university guy, and that's how most of my friends know me.
