Venator Class Star Destroyer
Posted by Wolfp on Saturday, July 6, 2013 5:31 PM

Just wanted to share a couple of pics from this project.  I have almost come to completion.  You'll see in order the base colors laid in; future, decaling, and panel lines being accented; painting and detailing complete with a dry fit of the swallow tail and bridge; turrets installed, dry fit of swallow tail, bridge and engine clusters.  It should be done, done within a week and some better snaps from the photo booth made available.  Please take a gander and criticism IS welcome Wink

Looking really nice!

I have all 6 Star Wars movies on DVD and love them! The Venator was always my favorite in the "big ship" Category!

May I ask what kit/scale that one is?

Cheers, Clemens

Nicely detailed! You really should get better pics with a neutral background to show that bad boy off.

Looks great! I'm so damn Star Wars old school that I can't yet accept these ships as true Star Destroyers, even though they would've been the original in the timeline. Sigh ...... one of these days I'll have to wake up. You've done an awesome job though. If you have not already, you should build a Millenium Falcon. I bet you would rock the Falcon! My next project is an AMT/Ertl Battle Droid riding a S.T.A.P. I'll be sure to post some WIP pics.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Clemens, it is the Revell kit, not sure what scale, but its around 18 inches long.

TD, better pics are on the way.  I reorganized and am still trying to find pieces of my photo booth setup.  They're somewhere.

Bill, I will take your recommendation.  I don't have a Millenium Falcon, so I guess I'll have to hunt one down.

That's a nice looking build. For some reason I am put off those snap tite kits, I always think of them as being to toy like. But looking at that, I think I have the wrong idea about these kits.

Bill, I did one of those STAP kit many years ago, was pretty nice. Mine got destroyed so now I have another one to try it again. When do you plan on doing your build.

Don't worry, its not a snap-tite; so, you can dive right in and not feel put upon or put off at all ;)  It is a fairly simple build though.  Think the worst problem I had was getting the rear to seat correctly.  Took a little engineering but it turned out well.

Thanks for the info I had assumed all those Revell kit were snap tite. I'll have a look for the kit.

Hey Wolf, awesome build!  Being a Star Wars nut myself, I love the build!  And thanks for the size info on the kit.  That is a good size kit!  Great detail work!

Kenpo, I take a page from the aircraft guys...after all the basic colors are laid in, I coated in future, mixed up some artist oils (a blue black for this one), hit the panel lines with the mix, let it set, then used mineral spirits to remove the excess.  Its a little tedious but works well.  I managed to find my photo stuff, so better shots are on the way.  if I had to do it again, I would probably have varied the tones of some of the panels.  Live and learn I suppose.  Anyway, thanks for the kind words everyone.

OK, I found my photo stuff, here are some better shots.  Let me know what you think of the photos.  I had my lighting setup, but there seemed to be enough ambient to do the job.

She is named "Vigilance"...its amazing what you can find on the Wookipedia Propeller

WOW. just WOW. She looks even more awesome with the neutral background... That's a very nice Venator you built there.

I definately have to get me one of those and paint it in a dirty, war-torn finish (scars and scorch marks all over the place...)

I've built this one as well. It's the Revell kit. Approximate scale, if my math works out right, is 1/4224.

This is exceedingly well made. Is it lit? Even if not, looks superb.

Klik

Edit: my bad. The old AMT Star Destroyer is 1/4224, this kit is 1/2250 -ish. Resin kits made to the same scale are available at starship modeler, which lists the scales at  1/4222 and 1/2256 , respectfully. My math is a little off because measuring these ships stem to stern after the fact is difficult.

Oh yeah, Wolfp !! She looks outstanding! You would be considered a God if you did the Falcon that well. I totally understand your "shoulda-coulda-wouldas" after the fact but only you see it that way. The rest of us are just . . .WOW. Great job!

Bish:   About that STAP. I will be hittin that project in a couple weeks I think. I need a break from plastic after that antique Hasegawa Fw190 for the GB. That old thing was quite a piece of s#!+. Although, I did (of course) take the STAP outta the box and checked out some parts and I gotta say, that is going to be a sweet build. I test fit the two fuselage? halves together and they fit so well that there'll hardly be any sanding needed to hide the seam. Also, the plastic seems so pliable, almost soft, it'll be a dream to work with. Of course, I'm used to working with these 30 yr old kits so.....

Klik, nope, not lit.  I don't have a firm enough grasp yet on working with electricity and lighting to attempt it.
