LIS Chariot 1:24

Meet my new project. Short term, I won't have much time to work on this. But by my planting this stake in the ground, it may help get me there faster.

Why Lost in Space? I guess it's the cool hardware that grabs me.

I will just say this. A preliminary check of the contents reveal a sound kit. I had a slight concern it might contain melted plastic. This was a problem early on from poorly packaged rubber tracks. Fortunately, they bagged the tracks separate. It is nicely packaged, and a cursory look produces a thumbs up.

Sorry, Capn. More monkey business.

That looks like fun.  Can we expect lighting and a dio?

Thanks,

John

Hey John... yes you can expect. That is the plan. Yes

This project may have met an early death. Taking a closer look tonight, all the sidewalls of the canopy are severely bowed in. Trying for near forty minutes to see if the problem is recoverable... the answer is... no way in heck. It will be impossible to install. I am gonna return it unless they can ship me a clean one. At this point, I am so disgusted, I will probably punt.

Although not 1/24th scale, take a look at the new Doll & Hobby 1/35th scale Chariot.  A really nice kit with 3 figures and some good after-market accessories (masking, lighting).  And no track sagging - the tracks are molded in one piece.

Nobody. It probably rotted away on a bck lot someplace or was pulled apart for bits for other shows.

Hey Arronax, I am considering the 1/35 version you mentioned. It is not without its own issues but from what I have seen, looks good. And yeah. I would prefer the tracks molded in plastic. I just wish they broke it down into separate components. The track assembly is all one piece, which includes the wheels. It makes for some cumbersome masking. But hey... I would take that over a warped canopy.

Here is a good interview with a guy that built a replica.

Lastly. I just wrote Moebius about the problem. I will see what they say. Worth a try I guess.

Here is how the piece looks. I could spread the piece at the front but the back was impossible.

Moebius wrote and will send a replacement. Now I wait and see.

Indeed!

With my luck I expect another boondoggle but hey, I hang onto hope.

Well... I am still waiting for the replacement canopy but... I made a decision. I am migrating this build to the new Doll & Hobby 1:35 scale model. I went ahead and purchased that kit.

The Doll and Hobby model looks like a better fit for what I want to do, and the pieces look tighter. On the 1/24 scale kit there is not only the canopy issue, but there is some warping on the body. I think it is fixable but it will take some work. Out of the gates the model wants to fight, and that is never a good sign. Who knows what other issues are waiting. I think the mold needs work because I noticed considerable flash too.

A few pluses for the Doll & Hobby kit:

1. The smaller scale is more conducive for a diorama.
2. It has plastic tracks. They are not as detailed when compared to the 1/24 scale rubber tracks, but, I think it will be much easier to manage.
3. The new kit has clear lenses for all the lights. The 1/24 scale does not. I might light the smaller fixtures too. In my book, either way... clear lenses verses solid plastic always wins.
4. How the robot is posed may work better with what I want to do with it.

I am closing this thread and I will start a new one.

Closing the loop. The replacement canopy is received and it is only marginally better than the first. Why am I not surprised.

I have an RMA. I will return the kit for my money back.
