The steps are filled in with styrene putty. I added MEK to a jar with the same styrene used to laminate the base shape. I kept adding MEK solvent until I had a peanut butter like paste. I filled in the steps with thin layers of the putty allowing it to full harden between layers. The final result is a solid shape made of the same styrene. I made these masters for Starship Modeler who released this as a kit in 2005. They going to rerelease it in the near future.

well whatever the name, it looks great. maybe i missedit in an earlier portion  of the thread, but what do you use to fill in the "steps", polished marble facing, like the egyptians? or perhaps some kind of putty? are you going to mold it afterwards?

It is based on a ship in a book but I didn't go with that name on my finished model. I named mine the USS Republic, another ship in the Baton Rouge series.

Hey I'm giving this a bump so somebody who wants to see my construction of masters using laminated styrene sheet can find it easy. Cheers!

Thanks Jack. The link to my post was in the last forum news letter.
I've been toiling away this evening and I've made some good progress. The only structures left to tackle are the warp nacelle struts. After that I'll finish scribing and adding all the other details. I took a bunch more pics so be expecting "Baton Rouge Part III" soon! LOL

I made a little more progress tonight. I got the basic shape of the saucer pylon built. I went to the hobby shop last Sat. and made my first purchase of supplies for this project (up until now I haven't spent anything on this project outside of glue). I'm into this project for a whopping $1.75 after buying a piece of K&S 3/32 X 3/16 brass rectangle stock. To be truthful I have used a couple of very tiny pieces of Evergreen styrene rod stock to build up locating pins for the kit. I figure with glue and styrene rod stock, this project has cost me less than $2 to date. Although I haven't spent much, this build has been very fun and interesting. Scratchbuilding is not only very fullfilling it also has a lot of bang for the buck. Now on a bit more expensive note, I ordered resin for casting the kit, OUCH! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The pictures were better than mine.

Except for the flat face of the command section --- and the Flying Tigers art on the underbelly. Clown [:o)] (Reminds me of a cartoon I saw in a SciFi magazine once where Picard orders Riker to put the StarFleet pinstripe back the way it was. He had replaced it with painted flames!)

Know what you mean about having a long line of projects! I've got too many unfinished projects as it is! Disapprove [V]

What did you think of the pics? The color drawing has a flat command section but that would be easy to correct when you build it. I'll be doing this ship in about 3 or 4 projects. In 1/1000 naturally. Wink [;)]

I have the side view from the book and a fan produced color 3-view drawing. I don't see an email link on your post so just click on mine and I'll respond to your email.

Thanks for the JPEGS, Woody! Big Smile [:D]

Much better than the stuff I got with my public library's scanner. Blush [:I] Tax dollars at work!

Maybe I'll dig up my old abandoned models just to share the pictures. Or maybe I will just find the floppies with the perfected orthagonal views and build 'em in 1000th scale...

Great scratchbuilt probe! You really have a bit of everything in there. Cool [8D]

Here are a couple images in case you can't find yours.Wink [;)]

Yes, I think someone would notice if you stuck fins on it.
the real question is would they like it or not :)
I don't have the spaceflight chronology, but if you are talking about the Starfleet Museum
how about a really impressive ship like the Asia Class Refit.
I dare you to attempt that one.

In the meantime, I remembered that I have finished a scrachbuild from the Spaceflight Chronology: http://starshipmodeler.net/contest4/ss_s18.htm

And, in preparation for more scratchbuilds, I drew these on my old roommate's computer:

http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/cruiser_pollux.jpg
http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/cruiser_cochrane.jpg
http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/cruiser_mann.jpg
I sent them to http://www.shipschematics.net/ with all the specs and a note saying "Adapted from Rick Sternbach" but this polite and helpful info was deleted prior to posting on the site. Angry [:(!]

There is not really a list, just keep watching this space. Wink [;)]
1/1000 is the scale of the Baton Rouge class, USS Moscow (or USS Republic maybe).

COOL!

Put me on the list!

Yours is 1000th as well???

The MOSCOW was not my only attempt at scratchbuilding from that gorgeous book. I also began the POLLUX and the PATTON. But I gave up about 80% of the way through. Little niggly problems began to get on my nerves. Evil [}:)]

But maybe with a couple of ships in a 1000th scale fleet I could be tempted to start and finish them in that scale...

I would have to ship them to some kind soul for kitting though if there was any interest. Sad [:(] I know my limitations.

I will keep track of this thread and await the happy news!

-Leelan

P.S. THANKS! for the welcome! I have been lurking about on the BB since I saw a hint of it on CultTVman's BB. Lots to see here! And good ideas are hatching!!!

That's the plan. Wink [;)] The parts you see are just the masters for a resin kit.

I know what you mean about the secondary. If you follow the painting, it doesn't work right and the fan based secondary hull designs are very ugly to my eye. That and they don't "feel" right. I hope my solution is liked by Baton Rouge fans who there are more of than I had imagined.

A guy over on Starship Modeler has kitted a 1/1000 scale Tritium Class cruiser from "The Chronicals of Space Flight".

Woody!

Any chance you might kit this beauty???

I began a MOSCOW scratchbuild myself many years ago. But gave up when I couldn't get the secondary hull designed to my satisfaction. I based the primary hull on the ERT 18-inch ENTERPRISE. Then built the impulse engines with plastic cut from FOR SALE signs. I put the engines off to the last and never finished. Sad [:(]

I think there is someone kitting the TRITIUM...

Lee, Thank you very much. I just now finished dry fitting the two part deflector assembly to the secondary hull. Next I'll be finishing the scribing for the secondary hull and then onto the saucer pylon. I know I haven't made very much progress this week but we are working a lot of overtime at the factory. Happy Happy Joy Joy. Yuck [yuck]

FireFox, Not to worry I have plenty of magnifying devices! Tongue [:P]
It won't be too small at just under 10 inches.
I should be posting new pics in a day or two. I spent this evening
building the deflector dish assembly. It didn't turn out too shabby
in my opinion. I was a little concerned about it because it is part of
my interpetation of the underside. I feel better seeing how it looked resting on the engineering section. Next the saucer pylon! Wink [;)]
