Here's some contract work I did, master patterns only. No painting or assembly on my part.

Randy Cooper is an elite scratchbuilder. It would be worthwhile to check out some photos of his work. I would love for FSM to do another article on his work. I hunted down the FEB 1987 issue, where the only article that I know of exists.

the forums needs a scratchbuilding section IMO. I really enjoy seeing others work.

When I used to interview people for model building jobs, all I was interested in was scratchbuilding. It makes some insane when I say this, but there are model builders, and there those that put together copies of others models. One is a craft and the other is a hobby. Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent kit builders here. I don't mean to diminish their talent by any means, I just prefer scratchbuilding regardless of the quality or skill.

Wow - some very impressive work here!
I'm particularly impressed by Cobywan's small-scale ships such as the Millennium Falcon. They're amazingly detailed for their size.
My scratchbuilt and "kitbashed" models tend to be BIG, but scratchbuilding a model as small as that but so detailed + accurate and shape must require even more skill than a large one! I certainly couldn't do it.

I've been following his builds for awhile now. All his work is breathtaking and very inspiring. My main question is, "How does he find the time?".

Cobywan your "unnamed starship" is too cool for works. It's a true work of art. Kinda reminds me of Clarks space ship on Smallville in shape alone (tear drop). Though yours is farrrrrr cooler and is more Art Deco not mention it appears to be a massive class of vessel.

Things in the works may require some talented people. Think along the lines of 1/56 scratchbuilds of ground vehicles and 1/100-1/1000 space vehicles. Figure sculpting experience with green stuff would also be a benefit.

All subjects would need to be completely scrathcbuilt from concept art. NDA's required.

Are you trying to start a buisness? 1/56 gaming scale? It's a odd scale to build in considering the 1/48 and 1/72 crowds.

yes, this is going to be geared more at gaming. I don't plan on starting a company myself though.

oh, sorry Woody. I missed that.

Non-Disclosure Agreement. It means if you were to blab about project details to the public without being given permission, It would be a breach of trust.

Pretty standard practice in any r&d project.

wouldn't this be more for sculptors and cast tool makers instead of model scratchbuilders?

jdavidb,

it basically covers development of any intellectual property, be it models, artwork, written text, software code, etc.

It was the 1/56, 1/100 and the gaming-related aspect that I had in mind with the sculptors and mold makers comment. Modelers & scratchbuilders are more about extreme detail and display. The art is dedicated exclusively to the visual aspect, and that's where our best skills usually are rather than engineering things that are intended for gaming duty. 1/56, 1/100 and gaming is usually more in the area of what sculptors do. Vehicles smaller than 1/32 and the larger elements smaller than 1/72 just don't have the kind of stuff we work on. Sculptors and model makers have a few things in common, I know. I don't know exactly what you have in mind, so I know it could be model makers you're looking for afterall.
