The Ill Fated Expedition of 1947
Posted by cthulhu77 on Thursday, April 20, 2006 10:26 AM

Brazil, 1947,  Six days out of Tapaua :

The steady chirping of the poison dart frogs kept  Lorne’s teeth on edge, the constant “neek, neek, neek”  was enough to drive him insane, especially after two weeks of travel by river to meet this outpost in the middle of nowhere, South America.  He swatted at the cloud of mosquitoes that formed a halo around his blond hair with indifference, what was another bite or two, to add to the welts that crossed his fair skin ?  A sudden squeal rang through the forest canopy as some animal or the other became prey for yet another. The frogs were blessedly silent for a minute, and his eyes started to close…”neek.”  Then, “neek-neek”.    Now the whole damned chorus chimed in again, and the Doctor forced his weary eyes open to take in the dark water passing so slowly beneath the long boat,  the same green scenery with scattered patches of blue sky above that had been the rule since they had left the last village.

Reaching behind him, he pulled out a bottle of the local beer and popped off the top with his Swiss knife. Warm.  He grimaced as he remembered the wonderful chilled pilsners he had consumed in the commissary of the Tirpitzufer, and wondered what had brought him around the world to this place, under the “guidance” of the American university.  Dr. Lorne Rottburg  snorted, and took another heavy sip of the foam, and remembered exactly why…he would have been hanging on the end of a Russian gibbet had not the scientific team from the United States managed to get him out of Berlin, and onto a cargo vessel headed for the new world.  He had to travel by boat, as his fear of heights precluded any possibility of aeronautical transport, the brave doctor’s knees would shake on even a short ladder.

The others on the team from Miskatonic had flown in by air, aboard a refurbished Catalina, and were probably even now studying the artifacts, and relaxing in air conditioned  nissen huts, and drinking godamned cold beer. Perhaps next time, he would take a pill, maybe that would be enough.

“Doktor,” came the voice of Je’sus, the guide, “the camp, she is there.” Pointing around the bend, Lorne could make out the bright silver tops of the arced metal, already beginning to gain the patina of steady humidity and stagnant air. The Catalina floated peacefully in the shallow lagoon, starkly white and clean in this miasma of rottenness. But what was that next to it, moored to the dock?

“Lieber Gott!” The words were expressed harshly, and his once sleep tired eyes sharpened quickly to take in the shape of a German floatplane, newly painted, but showing signs of age.  He knew  of no expeditions to this place from his homeland, and even so, this aircraft was not capable of making that long of a voyage. It had to have been brought here. But why?

Well, the little Arado is about done (waiting on some custom decals), and the hut is coming along, so it's time for some placement for the diorama:

and every expedition needs tables, maps, posters, and evil lexicons, right?  Oh yeah, and some nice throw rugs, too.

Is this based on a specific Lovecraft story, or just based in the world he more or less created?

All you have to do is make sure that you have no perpendicular angles on any of your walls, and if you hear any noises behind them, recite : "those are RATS in the walls, and nothing else."

Works every time. I think so, at least...

Cast the base, added on the foliage, and sculpted a stingray:

Looking good... Ya strike into my old days of poring of Model Railroader magazines eating up the diorama works.

Funny, have been thinking on a Lovecraft-ish thing of my own, based out of a little modeling project I've been vegetating on in my head for the last some-odd months.

You realize, ya gotta stick something sci-fi in this dio to make it fit the forum, right? Wink [;)]

Awesome!  Love both the story and the model thus far!   Ever get in to the RPG's (Role Playing Games), such as "Chthulhu Now"?  I had a great time playing in two separate stories, tho was a bit bummed when my character - the only one to cross over from the first to the second - won't up a blithering idiot at Arkham Asylum, just up the road from Miskatonic U!  Confused [%-)]

I have been messing with the Call of Cthulhu XBox game.  It does pretty well to capture my "lone wonderings" as something of a back-seat fan of the Lovecraft stuff.  The game is a real challenge, and have set it aside in a temporary fit of frustration at being unable to get past a tough spot.

As for my modelling thing, there's this wonderful little former coast guard station on the west coast (USA) that has an intriguing history laced with rumors and unanswered questions.  I have been thinking on a storyline that could almost make a reader poke into the real stories and go, "hmm, could it be?"  Of course, I'd get in a load of trouble with my hometown folk for the implications, but all the more fun, eh?

Am currently chewing on how to model the station as a diorama, slowly chewing it over, and have half-considered taking the historic re-creation and putting the "gothic horror twist" to it, capturing a scene like what you have in the works.

Looking forward to more of your stuff.  Don't forget the giant penguins, eh?

OH! Just checked your link out!  And yes, I am a fan of cephalapods!  In fact, can proudly say I had a tug-o-war with an octopus in a tidepool at the above mentioned C.S. station and lost!  Have always wanted to have a pet octopus.  Ever read the Steinbeck Cannery Row stories?  That C.S. Station spent it's last years as a small marine research facility with the researcher having a pet octopus that we loved to visit when I was a kid.  A key feature in the story I have mulled over writing.

H.P. Lovecraft didn't write the screen play for any of the Re-Animator movies - he died in 1937 of intestinal cancer.  The movie was based on one of his stories entitled "Herbert West, Re-Animator", but a lot of liberties were taken, tho to be fair most dealt w/updating the story for modern times, IIRC from the story.  Been a few years since I read it.

To sorta/kinda answer your question: Basically, sorta.

Sweet diorama.  Where's the Catalina?  And what is the German floatplane? The tail looks to be of the Heinkel variety.

Once the Catalina was built, my wife flipped over the size of the diorama...so, I had to go with just the Arado from a later part of the story (almost everyone's dead, plane is disabled), but it still came out nicely.

Here's a top view, and a side in colour:
