ncc-1701 TOS aztec?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 28, 2006 8:52 PM

Hi all,

I keep seeing information concerning the Aztec patterns on the enterprises. I am curious if the TOS Enterprise had Aztecing as well? I just got the Ertl 1701 and just wasn't sure if I should aztec this or not. Thanks for any help and or info.

Hi Spelunko,

The TOS Enterprise didnt have any aztec, but some people have built it and given it an aztec finish.. I guess as a spaceship, it would have to have some form of panelling, as I just feel that full on body pieces would have been too dificult to manufacture in space.. I have always wanted to try doing a TOS with a form of panelling myself, but never got around to it.. If you can make it look like it is in between the NX-01 and the Refit, then thats where I would start!

In the Mirror Universe episode of "Enterprise" the USS Defiant had an aztec pattern and looked rather nice. It couldn't hurt to have a light effect, but could be a pain to put on.

Well, I am thinking of trying it. In the end, it is practice for my Polar Lights enterprises that I plan to do. My, uhm, modeling skills, which are non existant need some work before I try my hands on those. I am starting my "Enterprise" ship collection now. Going from sailing ships, up through Star Trek. Gives me some kind of goal. In the meantime, I am getting tons of practice (Making mistakes) with other models.

Example. I am working on the AMT BOP. I screwed up once on the wings, I thought I could brush paint different colors of green and or red without masking. It looked more like a chimp got a hold of it than anything. I started again. Got the base colors on. masked and started spraying a different color red. ( I am still a rattle can user). I used a Tamiya color but didn't check the can well. I sprayed, got a funny smell, but continued. When I finished, I unmasked to find that this paint was a "hot" paint. Showed my masking lines, and actually took of some of my enamel paint. What was going on. I had used a paint for polycarbonate. what ever that is. Anyway, back to the oven cleaner and try again.

Sometimes I get the feeling while modeling that I am playing with plastic wrap. You know, that kitchen stuff. You start to get it out of the box, tear and it all starts to stick together, by the time you get it apart, you have lost the electri static charge for it to do anything. never seems to fail when I use it. this is the same feeling I get when modeling. what ever I do seems to cause more problems that fixes. But it is a way to learn. I am sure I will ahve plenty of experience with the TOS Enterprise.

What is that phrase:  If it isn't complete mind torture and disappointment, it isn't modeling. ? well, something like that. anyway, back to the oven cleaner once again. (Got to love that stuff)

Yes you always have that "out", oven cleaner. You are right, though, alot of lessons we learn in this hobby come from really screwing one up. I've done quite a few myself. Right now I'm working on painting a 1/1400 scale Jem Hadar battlecruiser. Several colors masked off on gobs of panels. Not as bad as a Feddie aztec pattern, but still enough to drive ya nuts.

One nice thing here is you can ask questions before trying something, do a little research first. Lots of helpful folks here. Even just reading through existing threads can yield an answer. You might try the aztec pattern on some scrap styrene sheet, with different paints and colors. Do you own an airbrush? Or is it a rattlecan?

Yes, this site is great. While I can get a ton of info from here, doing it by myself sure is a quick way to learn. Got to love it. I may get down for a few hours and than I am back at it.

I am a rattlecan user. But for an airbrush, do you think I could just mix some acrylics to the color desired take a big swallow and blow it through the lips. I better not try that. Unless others have and it has worked.Clown [:o)]

Back to scraping and sanding. Got to finish this bird before I can go onto the f-117A and than the space shuttle.

I don't se why you couldn't use a pattern for the Refit Aztec design. There's no "set" paint scheme for Federation StarShipsBig Smile [:D]

Spelunko, try drawing paint up into a straw & blow thru it  onto your model. It's a quiet & cheap airbrushWink [;)]

Aztec Dummies makes a template set for the PL 1/1000 Constitution Class ships.  They are $12 and can be purchased at CultTVMan's web site.  I picked up a couple at Wonderfest this year...

I did see somewhere a TOS Enterprise done with an aztec, but dont know where, if anyone finds it, please let us know..

To be honest with you, this has really got me thinking now.. My little Polar Lights TOS Enterprise has been sitting there for about 2 years now saying re-do me.. I think I might strip that little bad boy down and do it with an aztec..

I am getting in way over my head, cause I still have the big one going, and I also have the AMT Refit and Reliant waiting to be completed...But the aztec TOS E sounds like alot of fun!

The original Enterprise had no aztek pattern, but did have weathering and a VERY light set of grid lines on the upper saucer.  Check out  the website called the idic pages for some great pics of the model.

For the record, on the last ep of Enterprise, there was a shot of NCC-1701 during the "These are the Voyages...." monologue, and it was the CGI Defiant model, complete with all aztec-markings, re-dressed as the Enterprise.  That would be 'canon' - I regard it as a version that falls between the refit from the movie and the last TOS ep in 1969.

This sounds vaguely familiar. Wasn't there an alternate universe episode (Mirror Darkly?) in which the Conny Class ship was in Aztec?
