According to Dr. Thomas Graham's fine book, Remembering Revell Model Kits, the Revell kit is on 1/485 scale.  It was originally released (as the Enterprise) in 1967, and was reissued several times under different names:  as the Hornet in 1968, as the Yorktown in 1968, as a "Battle of Midway Carrier" in 1976, and as the Enterprise again in 1979.  Dr. Graham's coverage (in the edition I have, at least) stops in 1979; it may have reappeared since then.  It's generally regarded as a pretty mediocre kit, even by 1967 standards.  The basic shapes look right, but turning it into a really detailed model would take a lot of work.

Tamiya has had 1/700 versions of the Enterprise and Hornet in its catalog for a long time.  They represented the state of the art when they were initially released (in the late seventies, I think), and in many ways they're pretty decent kits even by today's standards.  Both of them do, however, suffer from one big error:  their islands are too skinny.

Just a few years ago Trumpeter released a 1/700 Hornet.  I haven't seen it outside the box, nor have I bumped into a review of it, but I have the impression that it's considerably better than the Tamiya renditions.

To my knowledge no manufacturer has done a 1/700 Yorktown.

Depending on what scale you are looking for, Trumpeter do a 1-700 Hornet, while Tamiya do a 1-700 scale Hornet and Enterprise. I do not know of any other Manufacturers who do a 1-700 Yorktown Class Carrier.

sm,

I'm doing a 1/700 Enterprise right now and have posted photos here.

/forums/1145160/ShowPost.aspx

I've listed the reference books I'm using and my attempt at fixing the skinny island problem.

There's another thread here dealing with a 1/350, Yorktown from a Hornet.

Surfsup/Mike

I did search for tamiya Enterprise CV-6  i couldnt find it from squadron or internet hobbies, i did go to serveral local hobbies, no luck.  any suggest?  yeah it seems that they dont have the Yorktown CV-5 in 1/700 scale.

I am wondering if the Hornet/Yorktown/Enterprise have the same body/hull/island/flight deck from the battle of Midway?  since i know all of them are Yorktown class.

Mike  nice photo of the Enterprise!!!  Lovely ship!

The Yorktown and Enterprise were nearer sisters than the Hornet was.   The flight deck was similar on them and differently-shaped on the Hornet.  See the Yorktown/Enterprise and Hornet flight decks (laser engraved) from Nautilus.

See the difference forward.   The island on the Hornet differed from the other two.  It implemented lessons learned as far as bridge-space shapes and manufacturing ease.  Doc Tilley can also fill you in about 'the Gap'.

Changes in island and flight deck shapes also drove changes in the secondary armament between the members of the class.

The hull shape was essentially the same among the class.

jtilley also another innacuracy of the Tamiya Enterprise is that with the aircraft that came with it the ship only had the 1942 fittings and weapons including the 1.1 caliber "Chicago Piano" and most of the aircraft were in use early 1943 to late 1944. There is no update that I know of for a late war E.

sm,

There's also a Mini Hobby 1/700 Enterprise made, I guess from copies of the Tamiya molds. I'm using one in my kit bash. The details aren't as crisp and the model is a full hull, not a waterline.

Mine has been in my stash for several years, and I haven't seen another for some time. That might give you another shot at a kit.

I have seen the Hornet kit recently, but as others have mentioned there's the differences between Yorktown and Hornet you'd have to fiddle with.

You can build a 1/700 "Midway" Yorktown or Enterprise by using Tamiya's Hornet and Enterprise kits. You can use the Mini Hobby Enterprise in place of the Tamiya Enterprise.

Here is a list of what you need.

Tamiya Enterprise #77514 (Hull, island an 20mm galleries.)

Tamiya Hornet #77510  (Hull, flight deck and 20mm galleries.)

Mini Hobby Enterprise  (Island and 20mm galleries) in place of Tamiya Enterprise.

White Ensign Models PE #755  (Hornet & Enterprise)

Eduard's PE #17001 (This has some pieces that the WEM set doesn't it is designed for the

                            Tamiya Enterprise kit.)

Trumpeter aircraft

F4F Wildcats #3404

SBD Dauntlas' #3402

TBD Devastators #3403

You will need more 20mm and .50 cal guns than come with the WEM PE set. They do (WEM) make a .50 cal fret.

You will also need to get some resin 1.1" guns or use the ones in the WEM set.

These pieces can be bought from Free Time Hobbies and Pacific Front Hobbies who advertise in the FSM Magazine.

The Hornet kit should be no problem getting but the Tamiya Enterprise is not available in the States. Free Time Hobbies has ordered the kit for me in the past and sometimes they have some in stock.

Paficic Front Hobbies has three different 1.1" guns listed in their catalog.

H-P Models (Germany?) makes or made resin kits of both Yorktown and Enterpise in a 1942 fit. I don't know what time period of 1942 the Enterpise kit is. Pacific Front has them listed on their web site.
