My U-69
Posted by TRM on Thursday, November 25, 2010 9:10 AM

Hello All,

I stared here on FS with one of my current builds FW 190: A tribute to Gramp.  I have, as do most of us, others builds going on.  I have decided to open my thread on one of "the other ones".

I need to play a little catch-up here...

I started my U-69 back in April 2010.  I am just at the point of finally joining the 2 halves of the hull.  So I will select a few photos between the start and now bringing the build up to speed.  I should be able to accomplish the catch-up within a few posts.  Any questions, comment and/or suggestions feel free to.  This helps.  I was informed of a missing vent recently on the deck near the stern and was able to correct this.  These pics will be in a later post, just about at the point I am at in the build.

Thanks for stopping by, hope you enjoy!

(from u-boat.net )

U-69 was launched on September 19th, 1940 and commissioned on November 2nd, 1940.  She participated in 11 war patrols in her career and belonged to 7 wolf packs. He was a member of the 7th Flotolla (Unterseebootsflottille "Wegener") From November of 1940 to February of 1943.  Throughout her career she amassed 16 ships sunk for a total of 67,500 GRT, 1 ship damaged for a total of 4,887 GRT,1 ship a total loss for a total of 5,445 GRT before her fate on 17 Feb, 1943 in the North Atlantic east of Newfoundland.  She was sunk from depth charges taking with her 46 souls.  Until this point no crewmembers aboard U-69 had perished while in her commission.

The time period I hope to depict will be from the end of her 3rd patrol (thank you Dougie). All the criteria I am looking to depict are present.  She is returning to St. Nazaire and has added 33,868 tons to her war chest for a total of 61,205 tons at this point.  U-69 was commanded by Kptlt. Jost Metzler (Knights Cross).  Metzler would leave on the 4th patrol with u-69 only to be stricken ill within days from leaving St. Nazaire.

I am still learning as I go here.  The subtle differences between the boats are becoming more apparent.  I will be ordering some of the critical add-on kits to help me along the way.  Starting with the PhotoEtch: Flood & Vent set (U-Brass/WEM #PE 7232).  Below are a couple of shots from the beginning stages of my build.  I started opening the flood vents along the hull in preparation of a delivery of my add-on.

Upon her launching:

These are only a few of the 7 confirmed shots that exist.  I have a couple of unconfirmed ones as well.  All research I have relied heavily on other builders, AMP Forum as well as websites dedicated to information about U-boats.

Enough said, the build:

"Oil Canning" effect...natural bending of metal under pressure

Opening of vent holes:

Repositioning "bumps", which I have just found out are related to pressure for the torpedo tube, Adding correct number of radio/sonar sensors(copper and brass discs) to the bow,  filling improper drainage holes above anchor well and repositioning of the anchor well about 10mm forward:

I have since removed the doubler welds in preparation for adding ALL new rivets, I will be making them again

New torpedo doors will be added, excellent add-on from AMP

Added missing saddle drainage holes

The beginnings of a scratch pressure hull.  Not really seem when model is done, but will eliminate the "empty" look

Modelbrass Add-on PE

Added lower vents from Modelbrass

Aluminum cans make for a nice finish

Working on bow section...

Inner torpedo hatch will be removed....in real life it would be behind the outer door...

PE from Eduard....mix and match...

Pressure hull in, saddle tank extensions on and filling

Bow PE going on.  Used sanded down Revell deck section (cut)

Hole for the tow-rope moved forward, brass rod and filling, filed front edge to simulate actual u-boat

Kit bashing...

Next post I will finish up, bringing up to speed where I am.  Getting ready for "Turkey Day"!!!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Cheers!

T

Yes Yes

If I had a third thumb, I'd give you that one too. That is amazing TRM! Sounds like you've done a great deal of research as well.

Following in Siara's footsteps. Nice work so far. I picked up one of these a few months ago but haven't decided on how far I wan to go with it, plus I still have my Gato to work on.

Thank you guys, the kind words are much appreciated!

Vance,

The research is the fun part as you probably know.  I always star with a little then end up with books and hundred of printed pics & documents and folders with gigs of pics....still I don't know 1/10 of what some of the guys know in the sub community, but it's fun!  It became easier when I honed in on what U-boat I wanted to depict and time frame.

Joe,

I am sorry, I didn't mention itStick out tongue The kit is Revell's VII C "Wolf Pack" 05015 in 1:72.  Great kit out of the box.  There are a lot of correction to be made if you need or want to go that far.  Most can be done with out buying add-ons.  The add on PE I am using is the Flood and Vent Set (formally  U-brass) from AMP, Eduard's VII C 1/72 details set, 1/72 Upgrade set from Modelbrass, I have to order Archer's Rivet transfer set soon.  There is a considerable amount of scracth stuff as well.

Division 6,

That is funny that you say that....I love ships, subs included.  When the model "fell" in my lap from a friend, I started looking around for information....Siara's work was everywhere I googled.  You can't avoid it.  He is rather amazing especially with the use of raw, around the house materials.  I have refered back to his postings once or twice to figure out what the hell I was looking at, but, it seems not too often once you get rolling.  He is helpful as well, get stuck he will most likely have and answer.

It has become addictive.  I have been looking at the Gato too, as well.  Force myself to stay away till I finish the few I have going on!  Not to say if the right time, with the right price, it won't end up on the bench!!

Now we come up to date with the build:

The stern section with the missing vent

Correcting the Eduard section, started drilling a pilot hole 37mm back from tip of stern

4mm hole finished off with round file

Escutcheon ring cut from aluminum rod

Using leftover 1/700 rail stock I cut grate pieces

Using CA, Attached from the back side

With the plate and grate in place, I added a piece of tubing to fill the void

Capped with sheet stock for good measure

Complete

TBC...

T

TRM,

Excellent execution of scratch built details, modifications  and research!

Looking forward to more of your work on this project, obviously you intend on keeping a very high standard throughout this build!

Thank you for the kind words guys!  It certainly tough to achieve a high standard compared to the builders within this site and others.  I am working on the internal framing just above the saddle tanks and plotting some exterior pressure hull fittings.  Not much will be seen, but it would be nice to put some piping and exhaust in there.

We laid to rest our puppy yesterday.  She was 3. Kidney failure due to Lime disease. She was the best.  Trying to fill the void by keeping occupied.  The framing part is tedious, but it will certainly keep me busy.

Thanks Shiloh!

T

Now an update...

Interior framing set

Put down some 1mm thick strips to pad up for the deck.

Placed a support where the decking pieces come together

Modifying parts

Warning!!!!  This is my feeble attempt to fill some of the "void" under the deck.  I did not want to go overboard, soooooooo, I made some piping, loosely based......very loosely based one one of Simon's drawingstill need to connect the exhaust ends to the mufflers....be kind, most , if not all is barley seen.  Just trying to add some definition. ::)

Removed hatches from original kit and doug-in

Going with the Modelbrass hatch with this one.  The eduard doesn't match, at lest in the one picture I have of the U-69 deck in this spot.

Need to add something to the edge on one side, seems to be a larger "bulging" rounded edge than the PE

Modelbrass part

Eduard Part

More to come....

Cheers!

T

Thanks for the kind words and the condolences Mike.  The family is begining the heal.  My girls are even talking about adding a new family member soon.Big Smile  It's so had to find the "right" one.

another quick update....

Started cutting hatches to add the Eduard PE

Started putting them back too.  Added a wire handle....

Finally, started the rounded hatch(really need to look up what hatch this is....so I can stop calling it "the rounded hatch")  Removed the hatch that is standard on the Modelbrass deck.  Adding the supplied replacement seemed to make it too layered.  Trying to correct the rounded lip as well.

If I can figure out how to attach the mufflers to the tailpipe ??? ??? ??? I would love to prime the innards (PH) tomorrow maybe! Wink

Cheers!

T

This build is the sort of material that FSM needs more of published!

Your in depth research and execution of details make for great and interesting techniques to read.  Keep taking lots of WIP's and submit it as a article, the topic of not enough 'meat & potatoes' has been ongoing lately and I feel this is a well done stew of modeling medley us readers and subscribers enjoy. Eats

Ditto

Jason's right my friend, when you're done you need to send this in to FSM. I'm sure they can take whatever text & descriptions you provide & shape it up into a proper article, if you're worried about that.

Thank you both.  I will certainly consider it.Big Smile  Need to actually finish it!!!Hmm  Took 8 to 9 months just to get the 2 halves of the hull together, can't wait to see how long it will take finish the deck.  It's a good thing hobbies are not to be rushed!

Thanks again!

Heh this build is going well so yes do not rush it!

If you do submit a article be patient on a reply and once confirmed realize it will take months to actually be published! Putting together a magazine will make your building pace seem speedy!

Not much of an update....Been sanding and awful lot lately. Just about completely removed all the rivets I had added onto the hull. I received the Archer rivet transfer sheet and am looking forward to priming the hull so I can add them. Still need to add a few more things to the hull and get the deck secured (this will be a while). Thought I would post a couple of the upgrade kits....

As for the new pup....she is a handful.  TRAINING ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!

Will most likely order a brass replacement barrel....
