Announcement - MAS boat book
Posted by PTConsultingNHR on Friday, December 10, 2010 9:34 AM

Just as a FYI in regard to the Italeri release of their 1:35 MAS boat ...

I would like to take this opportunity to make a general anouncement that may be of interest to you now that Italeri has announced that they're releasing a 1:35 kit of a 500 Series MAS boat.

I've sent a manuscript (including photos) to my publisher (Nimble Books, LLC) which he received on 11/9/2010 and it was placed in their production que for 2010.

There is also a notice on their website that indicates that all of the books one sees on the production que list (showing November and December) should be out in print by the end of December 2010.

I was able to accomplish the feat of writing this book because of the assistance of Admiral Maurizio Ertreo, who, up until August 2010 was the Naval Attache in DC and now heads up their Naval Archives in Italy, their Naval Archives and an author named Vincent P. O' Hara (who wrote several articles on MAS boats with Erminio Bagnasco) and several other people.

It was a huge and daunting undertaking for me and it would not have come to fruition without their efforts. And, quite frankly - if it wasn't for my becoming acquainted with Admiral Ertreo, the book was doomed to die a long time ago.

Whereas it is definitely NOT the definitive book on MAS boats, it is - I feel - a good book and quite frankly, my best effort to date and I hope all of you will find it helpful and informative.

That sounds great, Garth. I look forward to reading it. What an opportunity to meet and work with the Admiral.

Well, WORKED with  him ... I never met him personally, even though we did try to meet up.  He is a very nice gentleman and he is/was a GREAT help during this project.  Honestly, it would have never come to fruitrition without his input and assistance.

So, all of you out there; don't thank me for doing this book ... thank him.

The Italian MTB. Obviously we are in the company of an expert here in Garth, but as a huge fan or at least student of all things Regia, I suggest one could do worse than study the history of the elite parachute frogmen of the Decima Flottiglia MAS. (10th MAS flotilla).

Crewing a manned torpedo, and successfully, and surviving. Really good stuff.

Bondoman,

Thanks, but I am in no way or would ever think I was an expert ...............

Maybe an educated "interested party"  ... but certainly not an expert ...

Pardon my ignorance, what is a MAS boat ?

MAS is an acronym for Motoscafo Antisommergibili - motor antisubmarine boat in English.  Since the early 1900s, there have been a large number of different designs, mostly hard chine planing craft.  Quite a few of the earlier boats have been produced as 1/72 scale resin kits by Choroszy Modelbud, a Polish company.  Italeri has just released a 1/35 scale plastic kit of MAS 568, a two-step hydroplane that looks like this:

A comprehensive work on these boats is Erminio Bagnasco's M.A.S. E MEZZI D'ASSALTO DI SUPERFICIE ITALIANI - lots of photos, technical drawings (like that above), and specs.

Mr. Ross is correct about what MAS stands for.

The book covers the boats of both wars, and the inter-war years.  I was interested to learn that during WW1, the Italians used Elco boats (built in Canada) by Elco because until 1917, the US could not provide arms to any belligerents as well as boats built to the Elco design but under license in Italy.  These were the same boats that the British used as MLs.  They were very attractive boats.

After WW2, Italy received several of the US built Vospers, some of the US buit Higgins PT-71 Class boats and even one 77 foot Elco ... The book by CDR Bagnasco indicates that some of the Higgins PTs used by Italy were still in service until the mid-1980s, that was interesting to me as some of the boats were from early production series ...

I was wondering if the book's release is on schedule and where I should go to get one.

Very best of success with it. Sounds great!

Pre-ordered!

Thanks for that link and for what should prove to be a valuable resourse for future finds for the library.

There's a fine MAS build going on at Armorama right now. I'm thinking I'd like to scratch some of the interior details, too. Have Schnellboot and PT in 1/35 awaiting in the stash, but MAS called out to me first.

Can't wait to receive the book.

Thanks, Garth.

Thank you for the kind words Wally.  Yes, I've been following that build on MSW and there's another OOB build featured on today's modelwarships which is also quite good as well.

Owing to the people who helped me on this book; RADM Ertreo and Mr. O'Hara, and Ms. Pezzali, it became a "fun project" and quite frankly, thanks solely to these people?  It is actually my best book ever.

I see you're from VT, Wally ... I'm from CT myself.

HA!

I worked in Hartford from 1985 to 2008, with a stint in Farmington from 1990 until 2005.  I'd LOVE to go back to work!  Where did you work?  I worked for the Travelers.

My late father was born and raised on the island of Manhatten ....

I misidentified the Forum on which the MAS build is ongoing. Garth, it is MSW that I saw. Same graphics format. I'm easily misled.
