Revell 1/144 U-boat VIIC Finished!
Posted by fermis on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 11:08 PM

I am a nautical noobie, so any tips or tricks along the way will be greatly appreciated. My very first model was a tiny snap-tite battle ship, back in 1981/82 ish. Haven't built a watercraft since! So, for something different, I'm building this here U-boat, with a massive PE set from Griffon....tons of tiny, tiny bits! Yesterday, I put the hull together and started on the more involved parascopes. This morning, I picked up some materials to mount this on a base. I cut down an oak plank to 4"X20" and hit it with a router. I CAed a pair of bolts inside the hull and will be using brass compression fittings as spindles.

Here's the more involved parascope. The kit provides 3 parts, with the PE, it is 16 pieces!!!

Also got a start on the tower.

Have a few more parts on the hull.

Born in Grunewald, Berlin, Oesten joined the German Navy in April 1933. After serving aboard the cruisers Admiral Graf Spee and Karlsruhe he transferred to the U-boat arm in May 1937, and was appointed watch officer of U-20. U-861 left Soerabaya, Dutch East Indies, in January 1945 carrying a cargo of vital materials, but only two torpedoes, and reached Trondheim, Norway, in April, just before the German surrender.[1]

Great stuff there!Yes Can you tell me where you got those PE goodies?

There's a wealth of info to be found on the net so i'm sure you can find good info on how they are supposed to look. Even the silent hunter games can be a good source as they depicted the uboats pretty accurate. Best advice i can give you is to take revell's painting instructions with a grain of saltWink

Kermit, the set came from Dragon. http://www.dragonusaonline.com/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=GRMN144002 (on sale!)

Made a fare amount of headway today. Put in about 6/7 hours, just on the tower! The PE set has a jig (that you have to assemble) to set the height of the railing. The rails are stainless steel, and a real M. F.er to bend without pulling you attachment points off. I can honestly say, I have NEVER cursed so loud, in such anger at a model in my life!!! I'd have rather taken a swift kick in the junkDead. But, I got it done and it looks alright!

The jig.

Bending the spindles down is where the arguments started! The PE instructions would have you try to slide another piece up the spindles. The piece spans three of the spindles and the holes are way too small. Trying to make this happen, without ending up in the looney bin, is damnear impossible! I didn't even attempt it. That piece is incorrect anyway. It is for the wood bench on the middle rail, which is three seperate pieces anyway. I cut the piece apart and rounded off the edges.

The rail.

And the tower, nearly complete, with all the rails.

Thank God that nightmare is over!!!

You may call me, Fermis tweezer hands! Hopefully I'll still have 20/20 after this! I do believe/hope that the hardest parts are behind me. If not, you won't hear from me again, cuz I'll blow my brains out! I have always tipped my hat to small scale ship builders, but now, my hat's off to them!Toast I have been slowly adding bits to the hull/deck as I worked on other parts. All the major components are finished now. Here's the BIG (yeah, that's sarcasmBig Smile) gun. 18 pieces!!!

The small gun consists of 7 pieces, and that A$$H0!E on the right is a cradle for torpedo loading. We did not get along too well. I thought I had words for the railing on the tower........for the first time ever, I actually got up and walked away......not once, not twice......FOUR times, while workin on those 14 pieces of he!!. By the end, I found myself off in the weeds, talkin to myself! Many of the worst words I have ever heard, flew off my tongue at it. It just stared back, tauntingly. I don't think I had as many words for ModelCraft's F-82Surprise!

I had some rum and feel much better now!

Some deck shots.

Just a few words for the railing, very tame compared to the cradle!Angel

Tower and goods set in place (these will all be painted seperately).

The trough toward the front is the torpedo loading hatch.

Will be adding color shortly!!!!

I can't wait to build an airplane again!

Try not to get a twitch, but for a bunch of us over here, 1:144 is Large Scale <G>

You probably do not want to go eyeball some of  the 1:700 stuff out there <G>

And, Donald McNarry (is that spelt right?) will cause a body to feel like they ought stick to snap-together kits <sigh>
