RMS Olympic 1/700 *COMPLETED!*

Update:  Forecastle finished and lower hull pretty much done.  Will be a waterline, so no props etc.

I admit, I don't know the visual differences between the two ships.

The Olympic is slightly smaller than the Titanic, not that you would notice at this scale.

Thanks guys!  Yeah, the biggest visual clue as to which one is which is the A deck promenade - on Titanic, about half of it is closed up with small windows, on the Olympic it is much more open all the way across.

Visually there are some slighter differences such as black at the base of air vents, bridge, and some B deck variations of the rooms.

They were so close in size you couldn't tell them apart from that - right at 882' a piece (save some inches) with the Titanic only being "larger" because it was heavier, and displaced more tonnage.  About 1,000 tons if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you guys!  I'm not a great ship builder but I love to dabble in different modelling realms (static cars, planes, ships, model railroads, RC planes, etc.)  Little bit more done... A deck, poop deck, and boat deck being worked on.  Definitely needs a lot of work up top, and don't like the stern bridge either.  Will work on that...

Still plugging away, the boat deck is taking a minute.  Lots of little things to paint and figure out.  I also went back and redid the rear bridge.  The kit one was too clunky so I somewhat scratchbuilt a new one from sheet styrene and photo etched railing.

Funnel bases are painted too, should be going on soon!  The deck was too wide to fit in the upper hull though and I had to sand the heck out of it to fit easily.  You can see all the shavings on my sandpaper - looks like wood!  That's good, cause it's suppose to... really being plastic decking.  I don't have a lot of fancy tools, so I used the sandpaper on glass table as a plane.  Works well...

Alrighty, been hung up on the boatdeck.  Really trying to take my time with it and do it right, but dang there's a lot of crap up there!  I have gotten the lifeboats done (two are scratchbuilt - I didn't have enough lifeboats on my TITANIC kit! Also scratchbuilt the the engine room skylight covers (I didn't do four holes in each as it is just too small, so I did two), added my own rigging lines and am installing the PE railing.  Once done, I will attach the funnels and the top stays to them.

Been plugging away today at it, finished the PE railing!   Came out better than I hoped, and am hacking off the factory plastic railing on the forecastle for the PE railing there as well.

I'm working on my first 1/350 kit and am finding that there is a lot of crap everywhere!

It's amazing that there aren't enough life boats! How could a company get that detail wrong of all things?

I would like to tackle a bigger one next (was even eyeballing the Amati 1/250 Titanic or the 1/144 fiberglass hull kit...)  Of course, it comes down to where to keep it - wife starts to get concerned when it's measured in feet and not inches.  As well, I like to keep all my models in a case free of dust - a bit difficult when the ship is 4+ feet long.

Yeah, unless I'm missing something my Academy model came with eighteen lifeboats - four sets of four on the davits and two seperate collapsibles to go by funnel #1.  I had to scratchbuild the cutters that run off the first lifeboats on starboard and port side.

Alright guys, been busy with work and other stuff lately but managed to sneak in a good day of building.  First up was "fitting out" of her funnels and rigging.

So far, so good!  Talk about a pain though... I don't know what I like least in 1/700 - photo etch parts or one millionth micron rigging.   Also managed to get the bridge and wing houses done, along with the lifeboats installed.

Still some work to do, and a water base as well... eek.  Hopefully I can pull it off well!

Thank you very much guys!  Progress has been going fast, but I don't want to show off too much of the ship.  You can see in one photo I made her official (TINY decals for N scale trains from Microscale... ugh!).  Suffice to say as of writing this though, the ship is done.  Now she needs a home, and I am working on that.

I tried the cheap and easy water technique using clear silicone - so far I like it.  I have only used plaster with paint, clear, and Future in the past.  I think this works out better.  I also made a simple wooden base for the painted foam to sit on, the stained and cleared it.

She should be done shortly, I'm going to bring her to Warner Robins, GA for the IPMS show there at the Museum of Aviation.

Thank you very much, incredibely kind and untrue words!  She finally came together very quickly today (was off work :) ) - set her in the water and textured/painted it.  I like it!  I still am finding little things to fix (like the gap in the bridge roof... I got some scrap styrene and filled it).  For all intents and purposes though, she's done.

Happy with the way it turned out, now I gotta find something else to work on!  I do have a 1/350 South Dakota class battleship in the closet...

Exemplary results.  Very impressive.  You did as well with the water as you did with the ship.
