Thanks guys, I appreciate the input!

Dave, I agree the Catalan ship model has become expensive if and when they come up on evilBay. The other two Imai sailing ships that I lust in my heart for, are the Napoleon and the Venetian Galleass. A little too rich for my pocketbook at this time.

Rob,

I agree that this is an important model not only for Iberian ship fans but I think for all sailing ship fans. Heck I would love to see other models that are historically accurate for this period. Heck, I would love to see more sailing ship models period!

Hi Steve,

I am finally getting back to "normal"  after some health issues while visiting South America and I have had time to read many of the "new" Ships Forum entries.  I came across this Thread and I have just finished reading through all your "Imai 1/50 Catalan Ship" Posts" .  Great work!

I had a chance to buy one of these kits back in 2013 but skipped it. Sorry I did.  You have made this into an exciting and challenging  model kit. I am wowed by the detail you have engendered into it. I really enjoyed  the shot of Rod Millard's  ship with yours too.  Thank you for keeping this "build" going.  Now I will start looking for a Catalan so I can duplicate Yours and Rods work... in 20 years or so.

Hi Steve (Bakster),

I have accumulated a couple of the larger (20inch?) Mayflowers.   If you need parts....

And yes , I am convinced, the ships section is ready for another one of your WIPs.

And also, I went back to look at Steve and Rod's Catalan models.  To good for words to describe. Wow.

Hi steve5,

That Wettringer site is gone. I had a bunch of Links saved; all fail now.

The primary one I used was http://www.wettringer-modellbauforum.de/forum/index.php?page=Board&boardID=87&pageNo=5

I had a link saved for the Heller le Superbe, too, already translated.  Gone.

Guess I better add a spare hard drive and save the stuff I like.

Hi Steve--

docidle
I’m so glad you got one! It’s A beautiful model that I know you can do a great job on

Yeah I am amazed in the difference from the smaller kit  that I had been working on. This 1970 kit is clean. Like I said--just one sink mark on a bulkhead. The smaller kit had numerous sink marks, and flash was off the scale bad. I marvel at the size of the box!

docidle
When I’m ready to build her, I plan on using Syren blocks and line. A bit expensive but well worth the cost.

For sure! I will do the same.

docidle
Please do a WIP on your build, I wanot to see all the cool stuff you plan on doing.

Oh boy. I am not sure the ships section is ready for another one of my WIPs. LOL. It'd be better if you did it. Then I can try to copy your skills. I still have a ton to learn with rigging. Surprise

Btw... The jury is still out if I ressurect my last one. A ton of work was put into it, and where I left off with it is surely fixable. The downside is that I had to make compromises. Such as with the deadeyes being out of scale. I can deal with that, but to be honest--I am not too happy with how the "wood look" came out. If I could do it over--I would use a lighter color as the base and weather it from there. One of the last images I posted showed the model where I thought it looked good. The thing is--the camera lightened up the color a lot. It does not look that good in 3D. I thought if it really looked like that--I'd have something.

So, do I bother with that? Or do I start over on the larger one that offers more room for improvement, and possibly adding other enhancements. Time will tell.

Thanks, Steve!

Steve,

I’m so glad you got one! It’s a beautiful model that I know you can do a great job on. There is a build on the wettringer site that you should check out if you haven’t already. However, when I tried logging on, I got a 503 error message. So I’m not sure what’s going on.

I plan on using the old original smaller Mayflower instructions with the names and great rigging instruction too. I also bought some extra stuff like Amati pumps for the deck, metal anchors and parrels. When I’m ready to build her, I plan on using Syren blocks and line. A bit expensive but well worth the cost.

Please do a WIP on your build, I would like to see all the cool stuff you plan on doing.

Personally, I think you should give the Mayflower another crack; however, you might want to see if you can pick up the larger Mayflower that Revell did On evilBay. It’s just an upscale version of the smaller one with all the beautiful detailing. It would give you a bit more room to work with and experiment on with all your great ideas.

Hey Steve, I want you to know that something came in the mail today. A 19 inch version of the Mayflower. I found it on eBay for $19.99, not including shipping. It was made in 1970. My gosh. I was barely 10 years old then.

Anyway, you inspired me to buy it. Overall the model is very clean! The hull looks perfect, the flash is minimal, and I even got a nice set of directions from when they spelled things out. The sails are kind of mashed, but I was not planning to use them anyway. The only issue I found was a sink-mark on one of the bulkheads. Oh, and a dead fly in one of the bags that hold the sails. I wonder if that is a 1970 fly? Maybe a university would like to study it's DNA from this now ancient past. Just a thought.

I never thought I would get an interest in this again but ... here I am. This won't be on the front burner to do, but I am excited to have snatched one of these. Thanks to you.

Oh...the person that owned it lives about 90 miles away from where I live. Maybe it's a sign.

Thanks buddy.

Tanker - Builder

Ahem !

If you have a good sprue cutter you do not have to do the sandwich job on the deck to hull join . I usually remove the top rib anyway because it interferes with the scuppers and drain channels .

TB,

My brain is not working correctly so I think I’m missing what you are trying to convey to me. Either that or I’m over analyzing it. Thanks for checking in.

Thanks Steve, Steve, Dave and Mike. I’ll try and get the pictures loaded this week. I was starting to think that I gave the group apoplexy by seeing an actual post with a ship in it from me!

Rod,

I so wished we could have met up. I would have loved to have taken you to dinner or at least coffee or tea.

When I finally entered on Friday, Mike was there with a couple of other modelers. We had a really nice talk and he showed me all the extras he did on his Viking Ship. It was all amazing.

I was blown away when I saw your Catalan Ship there. I knew it was yours Ins a second. It was even more amazing in person than in the posted pictures. Congratulations on your first place in th OOB with the Santa Maria, I took loads of pictures.

Anyway, hopefully we can meet up at some other Nationals down the roa.

Contest winner or not - a wonderful build!

Very happy to have you back and posting on FineScale with your builds again. Hope all is going as well as can be expected - better than can be expected!

Steve, I appreciate your input as always. Thanks for tagging along these last three years.

You are welcome and the same goes to you. You have been a faithful poster to my builds as well. I appreciate that immensely and I respect what you have to say.

I tell ya--I might just do that.

I was toying with the idea of posting the progress photos I did take between June and August but there really doesn’t seem that there a real interest in this thread, so I think I’ll just call it done and leave it at that.

What a bummer, and that is our loss! I would have followed your posts for sure.

I don't blame you for not doing it though. I know what you are saying, and I am losing interest in posting for the same reasons. In my opinion, the ships forum took a big hit when John Tilley passed. He was an anchor that made everyone want to stop in and see what he had to say. I miss him. But--I think in general--all the genres of this site are suffering. There are probably a lot of reasons for this, and few I won't express here. But-- the latest FSM email problem is driving this floundering ship over the edge. They need to fix this and fast. If there is a bright spot that I see, it is that there seems to be lot of people either joining the site or coming back to it. We need more and new life here.

I love your work, and it is great to see that you are able to push through the pain you deal with. Keep at it Steve.

Hey Steve, it looks great! Nice work sir. Congrats on finishing the project. It is great to see you back, and it great to see the work that you do. It was your work that originally inspired me to work on the Mayflower. Seeing this...makes me want to finish it.

There’s a bit of a gap so to speak on this thread. After a marathon session that included working on this 48 hours straight and then a couple more very long days/nights I was able to “finish” this ship. There is more to do to really finish it but I entered her in the Nationals since it was in my backyard.

I had the honor of having my Catalan Ship next to Rod Millard’s Catalan Ship. Unfortunately we both were skunked by a couple of wooden sailing ships. Rod’s Santa Maria did take best of category in OOB ships!

I was hoping to meet up with Rod, but was unsuccessful.

Anyway, here are the two ships side by side at the Nationals. Mine is the closer of the two. I will post the in between photos once it slows down a bit and I get the finishing touches done.

Another update.

I decided that the bolts that I originally thought would look good but after looking at them and thinking about it, I decided I would go with rivet heads. They look like the nail heads that are molded onto the model so that was a plus.

One of the issues with this decision was that the rivets came with the shank, so I needed to remove the head and then place them at their locations. This also will mean doing a boatload of delicate work..... No problem, right????

The first step was to paint them. Each packet came with 120 rivets and it is amazing how 120 tiny rivits could take up so little room.

Next came the actual cutting and I was pleased that I only lost 8 in the cutting phase.

Then placing a tiny drop of CA in each location and placing the rivet head on the strake headsup.....

I figure that it will take about 300 rivits to get 'er done.

The first picture is an old one showing the bolt head I was going with before. All the other photos show the process of my insanity.

Steve

This is 110 rivet heads!

Quick update.

I scratched the beam ends that are missing on this model. A bit of Evergreen and paint will make it what it ain't. After this I decided to change my mind on the bolts and will go with nail heads. Stay tuned.

Steve,

It's great to view your WIP again! I'm always learning from talented modelers and I really appreciate your posting pictures as you progress.

Your WIP is giving me impetus to look at the ships forum more often. I find it very enjoyable to watch guys like you, Steve5, and David K. tackle sailing ships.

Mike,

Thank you very much. It is nice to think I'm up there with the guys you named. But you should include yourself in there too bud!

Looking really nice.  How did you lay down the yellow with red over?  Two of my enemy colors.

keavdog,

With Yellows, Reds and Oranges, I always prime with Gray. After it cures, then I lay the colors down with thin coats and let them cure in between coats. Takes time, but it is worth it.

Wow, two updates in one week! If you feel faint, please find a chair before you fall over.

I was able to get some quality time at the bench today and my hands behaved to a degree. So I finished the cleats for the fo’c'sle and they don’t look too bad, if I say so myself … and I do.

I then started on the chainplates and deadeyes. After much deliberations, like a year’s worth and help from various sources, especially kiril4 and the awesome pictures he sent, I have decided to go with my first solution. So using Hearts from Model Shipways I twisted wire, Blackened them and then set them up as follows. I could have tried scratching blocks and rigged them as they are on the actual Mataro model, but for sanity’s sake, I chose this way. Maybe down the road I’ll rerig her but I would really like to finish this.

Of course I'll clean up the small messes before I forge ahead. Thanks for looking.

Thanks to both Steve and Dave.

PhotoBucket is actually letting go of the kidnapped/ransomed photos. I am still not paying but all my threads have pictures again! Which is great, because of all the lost knowledge that was ransomed are available again.

However, I am not adding to my folders because I don't trust them. So postimage.com is getting my business for now.

Anyway, I'll be adding photos this week to this thread.
