USS Yorktown at Midway

Hey-

 Yorktown was struck by two aircraft torpedoes also before she was abandoned.  I'm trying to depict her before she was torpedoed by a submarine. 

  Hammann is made from the Dragon Gleaves class kit of Livermore. The Gleaves class had the same hull as the Sims class.  There's a guy who made CAD models for the conversion parts for Sims from plans for the funnel, mid and aft deckhouses .  They're 3D printed parts available at Shapeways.  Just go to www.shapeways.com and search for Sims.  It may take a bit of searching, thier search function is pretty lousy.

 Why is she listing if this is supposed to be before she got torpedoed? Somebody leave a hatch open? :-)

The dive bombers scored three hits, but the damage was repaired quickly and she was underway when the torpedo bombers arrived.  From the air, she appeared undamaged, and they reported attacking a different carrier from the one the bombers hit.  They scored two hits on the port quarter, triggering her initial list.  When the sub caught her the next day, it put 2 into her starboard side.  The flooding temporarily evened out the list, but she heeled again to port after.

  Thanks for your interest!  I'm still working on this.  I've been working my way around the galleries cleaning up seams and adding railings, and other details.  I haven't taken many photos lately though.  Also, I noticed far later than I should have that the degaussing cables that the kit provides are pretty bad and not very accurate.  They provide a single cylinder of plastics that wraps around the hull.  After some research on what they are suppossed to look like (still not entirely conclusive), I added them using some fine solder to represent the 3 cables around the bow and stern and a half-round plastic rod amidships.  I used bare metal foil to make the brackets holding the cables to the hull.  So I have that installed and am touching up the paint. 

As you can see, I have also started on painting the flight deck and working on the crew.

Nice work on the cables!

I believe they're a nice addition since the ship's list will bring them to the viewers eye much more so than the ship on even keel.

For your aircraft, remember that two F4F were on the flight deck following the aircraft torpedo attack on 4 June 1942 - in the Yorktown after action report they are mentioned, landing gear collapsing from the shock of the submarine torpedoes hitting on 6 June 1942.  http://www.wwiiarchives.net/servlet/action/document/page/1281/7/0

In addition, there were a number of aircraft below on the hangar deck, including an upside down Wildcat as seen in your build and the picture showing it and a number of VS-5 SBD Dauntless aircraft, at:  http://cv5yorktown.com/?page_id=17

Also, on page 266 of Stephen L. Moore's Pacific Payback, he mentions seven operable SBDs of VS-5 were on the hangar deck at the time of the Japanese attack on Yorktown on 4 June 1942.  It also describes the damage to one of the SBDs which was directly under the bomb that exploded on Yorktown's flight deck during the dive bomber attack.

  Thanks for the info, good stuff.  I'm working on the hangar deck now.  I'm including a few of the SBDs that were on the hangar deck, and will assume for my purposes that they rest have been jettioned overboard.  I did modify one of them to look slightly damaged and will put it closest to the bomb hit, but it won't be able to be seen very well once I get the flight deck installed.   I'm going to try to show one SBD in the process of being pushed overboard.   

 I'll add the two F4F on the flight deck once I get that installed.

   I'm trying to finish up on the hangar deck so I can get the flight deck installed.  I added the aircraft; three SBDs, one TBD, and one F4F.  I also added some fire hoses forward for the firefighting efforts under the forward elevator well.  I have some Northstar figures, and some Tamiya crew figures.  I really like the Northstar ones, they're very well done with a good variety of poses. I added some around the aircraft to attempt to depict the salvage crew at work pushing aircraft over the side.  I didn't add as many crew figures as I had initially planned, although I'm still considering adding some more.  Unfortunately there is a limited view of them once I put the flight deck on, so what I have may be enough.  They for the most part will become silhouettes when looking the the hangar deck openings.

Hey everyone-

   It's been a few months since I updated this, so my apologies to evryone for not keeping it up.  I've made some pretty good prgress in the last few months.  Both Yorktown and Hammann are pretty much complete, except for some more weathering, crew and those details I'll need to complete once the ship are attached to the base.  I made the sea base using Chris Flodberg's technique that was described in a recent issue of Fiescale.  I still need to finish the edges of the base.  Once I attach the ships, I'll add all the rest of the crew, mooring lines and fire hoses.  Most of the crew figures are from Northstar, I really them, the look great and are easy to work with.  Here are a few pics.

Here's one for you .

     You are putting so much good work into the ship why don't you make the stuff more visible ? I'm doing the U.S.S. Franklin and I got caught up in the hangar deck detailing too .

    What I did was use " Broken Edge " windows in the flight deck to allow those items to be seen .The other way is to create " Lift Out " panels in the deck above the detail .

  You can then leave some framing showing at the edges as well . One other detail would be to have one plane just going over into the water , being pushed there by the salvagers .

 Promise not to get angry ?I have read a series of books concerning ships from Taffy 3 getting caught in a " time bubble " .

  Now here's a thought ,how about the MIDWAY at the Battle of YORKTOWN ? It would fit in with the stories about the U.S.S. Walker only an even different time .  T.B. 

I see this is an old thread. I'm looking for the colors for the interior deck,overhead and bulkheads.

In b&w pictures I've seen, it appears the deck has a gloss finish.

I like to use Tamiya and Model Master paints, so if you could referance these

I'd appreciate it.

I'm going to try and light the interior spaces.
