HMS Hood ship's bell recovered
Posted by ships4ever on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 4:51 PM

I just saw that Paul Allen has done it again, and recovered the ship's bell from the wreck of the HMS Hood. Apparently he attempted it back in 2012, but weather and other issues prevented recovery at the time. It is said to be in excellent condition, but will need about a year of restoration work before it is put on display at the Royal Navy Museum. The last of the 3 survivors of the Hood disaster, (of 1418 crew), Ted Briggs, made that request a few years ago before he died in 2008. This prompted me to search for information on the wreck, and it appears about as devastated as you would expect from a magazine explosion, blown into 3 parts. No turrets or guns were found, but apparently there is a lot of mud at the wreck site, so they may be buried by now. The largest part, the midships, is upside down in the muck, like some of the Japanese battleships that have been found.

On the bench: 1/350 Trumpeter HMS Dreadnought; 1/350 Academy USS Reuben James FFG-57
