Steingreber Admiral Vernon:Large scale wooden ship
Posted by philo426 on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 9:53 AM

i am well into my Stein greber(West Germany)Admiral vernon plank on bulkhead kit.I have deciddd to modify the hull profile and change the stern treatment.This is the largest model i have ever constructed with the keel mesuring out to be two feet!The hull planking is 3/8"mahogany planks with limiewood plating along the gun ports.

Here is the stern treatment I have selected and have installed the large rudder and preventer chain.(The chain limits how far the rudder can be deflected in a strorm thus hopefully preventing the rudder from being snapped off).

Looking good so far Philo. I'very done a few plank on bulkhead builds, there's a knack to it.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Hey I remember when you bought this. Good job taking it on.

Hey Philo;

    Save your saw-dust . the original sanding or saw dust makes great filler mixed with glue .  By the way , looking Good !   T.B.

Thanks for the tip!I am pleased with the progress thus far but I think i may have to build its own free standing display table due to the massive size of he model!

I did not have the blocks for the deadeyes so I made my own. I cut a dowel rod into sections and drilled the holes for the rope.

Looks like this one will be a real skyscaper!The height of the mainmast from the base to the top is 33 inches.It will be even taller when the 3rd doubling is put on,but i wont put thse on until the ship is mounted on a lower table for rigging.

I finished tying on the shrouds and lower ratlines and will now have to make blocks for the second course.

Due to the height of the masts and the low ceiling of my workshop,I had to move the ship to a tV tray to finish tying on the ratlines.Next up i will work on the bowsprit.
