Building the Revell 1\96 Spanish Galleon

Kirill is building the Imai/Lee 1/100 Galleon kit, which is an excellent kit.  The Revell kit is very much different.  Anyway, you might be able to find the accessories that you are looking for at HiSModels in Czechoslovakia.  Radek (the owner) runs an EBay store, although you can also skip EBay entirely and simply do an internet search under HisModel.  Radek specializes in sailing ships of all eras, and has some of the best fittings, sails, cannons, and flags that I have ever seen marketed.

Thanks Bill, I could have sworn I saw plastic on his forum page.I thought it looked awful damn good for plastic. I know Radek,I've gotten quite a few things from him- they are very personable there.I will ask him about the decals,thanks much for the info.

The Imai/ERTL 1/100 Spanish Galleon certainly is plastic.

I keep looking at that kit in one of my bedroom closet shelves and think about Kirill 4's build as well as David K's and wonder if I'll ever have the nerve to get it down and build it.

The Imai/Ertl Spanish Galleon is one of the finest plastic kits I have ever had the pleasure of building!  I have seen many wonderful models made from that kit; Kirill's and David_K's are among the best.

I actually have the Revell 1/96 English Man o’ War which is the Spanish Galleon with a bonaventure mast added. I’m not sure which kit came first, but for all intents and purposes, it’s the same.

On topic, I haven’t seen any decals for the other sails unfortunately either by Revell or anyone else. Bill’s suggestion about Radek would also be mine.

First off-I love this forum! I feel I can honestly say that we all get tons of information from all you guys otherwise we wouldn't know where else to go. So I am right I see that Kirills build WAS plastic! It is an awesome build.Yes Steve, after already getting the Revell Spanish Galleon about 3years ago its been sitting on my shelf calling my name. I have just started inquiring about aftermarket for this ship which has lead me to Radek who I'm sure you all know is with HiSmodel.I'm getting a great set of sails from him along with deadeyes,eyebolts, and maybe the decks and chain plates,which brings to mind- has anyone used Radeks chain plates with the hooks on them? It looks like according to his picture that the chain plates wrap around the deadeyes and you glue them on.He's sending me some to try with my next order.I must say HiSmodel are very accommodating and helpful-I wish he had a store here in the U.S.Also About a month ago I bought on line an old Revell ManOWar and yes found out it was almost piece by piece to be exactly the same as the Spanish Galleon except for the sails and decals.Through pictures on the internet I am going to paint them different. Mark, I just got the big Revell Spanish Galleon today & will probably build it next. I just finished the Imai/Ertl 1/100 Spanish Galleon. It has been the most fun of any of the ships I have built except the Kearsarge & Alabama. Keep in touch with me & lets pass any ideas we have to each other. 

 I do want to do mine in a solid wood color with all the fancy stuff too. I don't want that 2 color that Revell put out. I was upset when I saw the deck planks have raised joints that can't be pencil marked. The wood deck is a possibility. 

   On the sail decals I will try to scan mine because they are perfect & you could take a print & have decals made from it. I am not a computer genius, so let me try it.  Gene

     Gene, per your email, go for the wood deck at HiS models. It's a very good option.

     I  picked up the large Revell English Man-O-War 2 years ago (same basic mold- surprise!) and it needs a wood deck too.   Be aware the scale Revell lists is a bit off. Dr Graham in his "Remembering Revell Model kits" lists it as 1/65

And there has been a new discovery.  A Spanish Galleon , worth "Billions"!

  Jim, I swear, you know everthing. That is really interesting. My good friend was one of the ones that found the 1715 wreck off Sebastian Inlet in Florida. I have one of the gold coins. We also used to go to the beach there & look because they found a lot on the beach. He is a great model builder too.  Rocket engineer, treasure diver & model builder.

HiS (Historic Ship) Models is a wonderful resource!  I believe that Radek (the owner) provides great customer service, and his products are among the best. Check his site; all of his products are historically accurate for the specific period of the ship you are modeling. I couldn't recommend him higher!

Thanks Gene, sorry, I've been out of commission for a few weeks. I am very excited about your build! One of the best I've seen!  I already got cloth sails from HiSmodel and they look great just like yours! I hope you didn't go to too much trouble already on the decals. An on line friend of mine is also doing one of these! I agree with you on the floor planks. HiSmodel has a great looking floor for this ship also. I think its about $80.00 + shipping. I saw a picture of the Revell Spanish Galleon that someone did and it's exactly how I want to do mine so we'll have to compare notes! I'm just about to finish my Heller Soleil Royal and because of someone's kind instructions on how to post pictures on this forum I will be posting some along with the Spanish Galleon.Look so much forward to hearing from you and on your progress!  Mark, I did run some prints of the decals & flags ( not decals on the flags ) but they had some little lines in them . I was low on red ink so I am replacing it. I really want to scan it & send the scan to you as that will be easy to use & will probably be clearer.

    I am coming along great with the Revell Spanish galleon. I have the hull mostly painted & decaled & I used the kit deck. It turned out real nice even without the deck plank grooves. I sprayed it Tamiya Deck Tan & put a coat of Dullcote & Glosscoat , Mixed, & then put a raw umber wash on it. Then more clearcoat. & it really brought out the grain & a real nice lighter color. 

    I will post a new build on the Galleon pretty soon . It does look good & I learned how to do all the decal chevrons & they worked great. I did a lot of extra things on building it & glueing it that made it a lot stronger. Revell did a lousy job on giving you glueing surfaces. 

Hey Gene1,Where are you? How's your Galleon coming along? I just finished my Soleil Royal and am going to attempt to get the pictures on here plus I have started on my Revell Spanish Galleon and want to put progressive pictures on here also. My Galleon has the foremast leaning slightly forward and the mizzen leaning slightly backward,is this supposed to be this way? Hope to hear from you and others soon.Mark

Hi Mark, I have a tthread on here of building my Revell Spanish Galleon. I have the masts up & the shrouds done & am working on the sails now. I have the fore & main spars done with the decals on & all the deadeyes on too. Definetly coat the decals before you do them as even if they look good, they will split apart easy. I put at least 2 coats of Microscale decal coat on them & still had trrouble. 

     I have a lot of pictures on my thread or dicussion or whatever you call it. 

 Mark, I wanted to tell you to think twice before you waste a lot of time on the sails. I spent over 2 weeks painting & weathering the sails & putting those big decals on & sewing the sails on & rigging deadeyes & when i looked at them, on and 1/2 rigged , I didn.t like them as the sails were not good enough to go on a nice model . I cut them all off & will put them on as furled sails. A lot of work wasted & a lot more to go, but that's what i had in mind to begin with. I never liked the kit sails on this one, except for the decals.

   I loved the look of the kit up until now, but I think furled sails will look much better.

I saw your pictures(some didn't come through)but I think you've figured it out.They look great! A while back I bought cloth sails from HiS model,they look great and have decals already on them.Thanks so much for the info.As soon as I get along a little bit with mine -Ill send some pictures-Mark

Hi gene, I was asking you about the fore mast and the Mizzen mast on the Spanish Galleon. My fore mast sits slightly forward and the Mizzen sits slightly backward-does yours do that? Thanks Mark

Older paintings and drawings of galleons do seem to show forward rake on foremast and normal rake on mizzen, with mainmast either no rake or only slight back rake.

Mark, Don is right on that as far as this model goes. I have the furled sails on the fore & main mast & a lot of rigging done. At 87 the rigging was too hard for me & my eyes were giving me trouble too, so I just took the sails off & I do like it with the furled sails. I think your HIS sails wll be a lot better, but the rigging between the masts is harder with sails. I am anxious to see your pictures Mark.

I finally finished my Soleil Royal and after 2 hrs of trying to figure out how to (between my wife and I) get these pictures on the forum, we gave up.Cant figure out how to get them from post image to this forum.I have also started on my Revell Galleon and want to send those pictures also.Thanks,Mark

 Mark,  The cloth sails are a great plus.  How did you get them to billow-out so nice?

Thanks for asking about the rake on the masts. Your Masts "rake" matches the old paintings and sure adds some realism to what had been considered one of Revells "Art Decorations".

Hi Nino, thanks for the kind words,and thanks to all of you on the forum.You know Gene is the one who tweeked me on this ship! I loved all the colors! These sails came from HiS model.I got them because I liked the color and the insignias on them but they were a bear. I've worked with cloth sails but not to this extent. To get them to billow I installed small wire around the bottom and both sides of the sail by cutting the wire at an angle to shape it like a needle and "sewed"them in the very tiny hem around the perimeter so you could bend them at whatever angle or curve you wanted but I couldn't keep the cloth from sagging so I tried several methods of spray to stiffen them and finally got lusterless flat clear laquer spray to work the best- it stiffens right up after about a half an hour. I tried spray varnish,starch,hairspray etc.This is the first ship I've seen with masts that are racked forward and backward but found that because of the angle of the preformed ratlines they wouldn't have worked any other way but "out of plumb".This one was time consuming but a lot of fun.Thanks Gene for the inspiration! I'm still having trouble getting pictures on here.It took us an hour last night to get them on here,did the same thing we did last time but it wouldn't work.
