Wanderer Whaler build

Thanks Steve, I loved train layouts for 50 years or more. I had one more after that picture. I designed & built homes for 40 years , so I made sure I always had a train room. I generally put them in the living room because it was big & unused. The one in the picture was 10'x18' & my  last one was a nice size, 7'x14'. 

  I loved Virginia & Truckee & we spent a lot of time in Virginia City. I had their engines & cars too. I also have the C W Morgan, but I just started the big Victory that warship guy gave me. It is beautiful to work on. I am about ready to start another Victory post.

I really love your train layout. I mucked about on my own HO layout back when I was in seveneth and eighth grade. I did my rendition of the Virgnia and Truckee Railroad with a couple of steam 4-4-0’s. I would love to build another one someday when we have more room, heck if we have any room to build one.

You have made a bark, which is not usual in the plastic model firmament.

Anyone know of any other plastic barks out of the box other than USCG Eagle?

I am a 15th generation sailor out of Nantucket. I've researched whaling ships on the island, in Hawaii and out here in San Francisco.

If/when I build my next little scale Morgan, she'll be a bark.

I completely agree with GM on this, you did a superb job.

In answer to your question Bill about Barks, The only one I can think of is the Revell 1/96 ThermopYale, which gives you the option of building and rigging her as a Bark. I won’t even go into the whole Thermopylae model not even looking like the real ship scandal...

I would love to see you build the Morgan as a Bark too!

GM, thanks so much for the compliment. It really means something from a model builder as good as you. The Wanderer did turn out a lot rougher than some of my other ships, but the kit was not as good as an Imai. 

     My nephew Steve has had a cabinet shop & done carpenter work in Nantucket for over 30 years. He really likes it there. I know some people up there too. I am started on the Victory & thrilled to be doing it. I do love large scale models.

I started it the other day Steve. I have the gunports thickened & the decks painted with tamiya deck tan.I have the glue ledges for the decks all masked so I glue to bare plastic.

very nice gene ,would love to have seen it , there are a few old steamer's still operating queensland , and I do love train travel .when do you think you will start your victory ?

Thank you Steve & I will have questions for you. I am determined when I get on something I like. This was back around 1980 I built this layout & I worked on it from about 2:30 ( quit work early) til midnite & built it in about 4 months. This is the rough work in my garage. 

And this is the finish. It took a while to detail it.

 I did love HO trains. Old steamers & gold mines. We went in enough gold mines all over the west.

Here are some pictures of the finished (mostly) of the Wanderer. I did end up with some rough spots, but I am anxious to get on my 1/100 Victory that Bill, warship guy, gave me .

hope I can get some better ones. 

Steve , Thanks, this is a pretty fair kit, but near perfection is the Imai/Ertl Spanish Galleon. I even used the kit shrouds maybe because I was lazy. For the kits I build the Airfix rigging tool does a super job, once you learn to use it. I even used it on the Wanderer. It is not hand rigged & tied, but looks pretty good. The Revell 1/96 Spansh Galleon was a really nice build & nice looking model  Big. The Kearsarge is still one of my favorites.

   I liked the Aifix 1/72 Golden Hind & Imai Mayflower more than most I have built & they were super clean models to build.  Model building is still super fun to do & more relaxing than anything I know & after 75 years , it is not tiresome.

  Pretty quick I will start the big 1/100 Victory & I am looking forward to it. Don't look for Steve5 or David K's work because I will build it mostly OOB. They are younger than me.

Another wonderful build. I’ve wondered over the years what this kit actually looked like when built. I absolutely love it but I’m afraid that the price of this kit is going to go through the roof now that you’ve shown how to do it!

nino told me how to reset my camera for better quality pictures. Here are some I took for a trial. They looked beautiful on Picasa, but not quite as good here.

Thanks Jim, on the yards, I drill a hole for the biggest wire I feel safe to use & not weaken the mast. I drill the mast too & CA glue the wire to the yard & then to the mast. On small masts I use smaller wire. I always attach the sails first & glue & tie them on first too. On furled sais I make upthe sail roll & then glue it on with 560 & tie it so it is finished when & attach the yard to the mast. On full sails I drill the sail for thread & sew them on first too . I use 560 here too.

   On furled sails, I put about 4 or 5 coats of thin white glue on to stiffen them & then use oil raw umber or some color to stain the sails. I will get together with more detail when we talk & send the boats. I am anxious to start Bills gift Victory. I have paint & decks & glue & all I need is a finishe d Wanderer. I will take better pictures & post  them

     You haven't lost your touch with sails.  I'm glad you are keeping busy with this outstanding work.

     I wanted to see a close-up of how you attached the sails to the yards so I will update you on getting a higher detail image from your camera.

  I still like your Wanderer's Whaleboats the best. If I come across more little whaleboats that don't look "New Englandish", can I send'em to you to make them look realistic?

Thank you Marcus, these were bad pictures as I had too much sun & bad editing. I will take some more inside or on a cloudy day. I am real anxious to finish it & get started on the big 1/100 Victory that Bill ( warshipguy ) gave me. He is like Santa Clause to old guys. I have the Scaledeck comming.

   Building models has always been the most relaxing thing I can do, & I need it now.

this is the first I have done on the Whaler in 3 weeks. I am putting the rest of the sails on & getting ready to do running rigging.

Jim, Thank you for al the help you have been to me on everything. I had to do something to take my mind off this. It is a great help  to have something to take your mind of something so bad.  Thank you all. 

I suspect Gene will not be "Up" for emails for a bit.  I have asked what I can do to assist so perhaps he will send me word to pass on some details.

In the last 4 years that I have been on the Forum I have come to realize Gene1 is Loved by all. Trusted and respected by members and non-members alike and he even builds great models.

If you want to see the ship in watch this movie on youtube - Down to the Sea in Ships. The Wanderer is the ship in the 1922 Movie. One of the things you'll notice right off if the actual size of whale oil barrels, that are WAY larger than the standard barrel.

     Good to see you back.  And Hooray for that 1st day of retirement.  Does that mean your Parish can get along with out you as Councilman?  

     That's a great way to celibrate the event with building a Model Ship and a ship named Wanderer may be most appropriate for a retiree.  I am going to watch for you in Feburary.

Now as to getting Gene to bulld your Whale boats... Get in Line!

     Darn, I bought "Down to the See in Ships"  but it was the Talkie from 1949.   Gotta go look for the silent "Whale of a Tale" now. (The 1922 Down to the Sea in Ships)

300 or so barrels per voyage. 5-8 barrels per big bull sperm whale. 35 gallons per barrel.

$ 1.50 to $ 3.00 per gallon, depending on various wartimes.
