1/350 scale USS Ronald Reagan
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 7:44 PM
I want to build a 1/350 Ronald Reagan. I'm assuming the Trumpeter kit of the Nimitz is the place to start. Any advice? I haven't built any models in almost 20 years.

Thanks for any advice.

Its the only place you can start. There is word that Trump will be re-releasing the Nimitz as one of the later versions, but as of today the Trump Nimitz is the only game in town. Creating a Nimitz-class from the Enterprise is a piece of major surgery.

If you are doing it whole hull, be prepared to build a new bulbous bow structure.

The flight deck will be same, but you will need to throw everything above it away and rebuild a new island.

Nimitz's island

Reagan's island

The port-side hull sponsons look to be the same. Haven't checked the starboard sponsons.

You will have to cobble together deck numbers and island numbers. Not sure if they are available in decal yet.

I believe the White Ensign pe set offers various antenna mast combinations which make the early Nimitz-class, again the Reagan is another story

I should'a known better. NAVSOURCE doesn't allow hotlinking of their material. It showed up on the preview, I thought that maybe Jeff Herne's system worked - but I guess it was because the photos were in my cache. Paste these URLs into your browser. You may need to add a trailing space after the .jpg.

The first is the bulbous bow on the Reagan.

Ths second is the island on the Nimitz

I remember my first trip to Newport News Shipbuilding when the Ike was under construction in the dry dock. My dad, who worked there, pointed out the lines of the hull. She may look ungainly above the waterline, but below it, she's built for speed!

tucsontrojan,

There's some more detail stuff converting a Nimitz to a Reagan.

There are only 3 arrestor cables and the weapons elevators are rearranged. The landing area is at a different angle and the flight deck is wider.

Some of these details aren't all that critical to most observers, but the lack of one cable is one you couldn't dismiss.

A different conversion, you may consider, is to take the Nimitz kit and convert it to a post mid-life refit Nimitz. (Sounds like something you may need a chiropractor for!)

This conversion wouldn't require an entirely new island, but would require some scratch building, etc., to get the new look. New main mast, new antenna tower and a rearranged island top deck.

Either way you go, enjoy.

Mike
