PT/S-boot group build?
Posted by cthulhu77 on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 8:43 AM

There was some talk earlier on about doing an Airfix schnellboot gb, but in the interest of trying to get as many people on board as possible (pun intentional), perhaps we could have a "torpedo boat" group build? That way, we all would have access to kits easily.

   Takers?

Hi,

I'm afraid I'm a n00b both to this forum and to boat building, so I'm not sure what the group build would involve.  I am an experienced 1/72 armour modeller with a new found interest in 1/72 boats and I'm very interested to learn more.

All the best

Have to love that 72nd armor, some really nice kits out there!  A group build is just when a bunch of people on the forum decide to build the same kit or type of craft in a certain timeline, usually between six months and a year, and post up questions and pics. It somewhat focuses the thread in one direction, ie: P-47 gb is a great place to learn different techniques on building 47's, etc.   If we did one on PT boats solely, it would be a nice reference thread for those building PT boats...we shall see!

Looking forward to seeing some of your work too, 72nd is the best !

Would you guys like me to act as a somewhat-ad hoc-impromptu judge for this build?  Just asking.  I realize I'm not a builder myself - but I know what a good model looks like.

Well, I suppose it would be dependant on whether or not it is going to be a contest, or just a group build...I might not be viable for a contest, since all of them are going to be "what ifs"...

What do you all think?  certainly couldn't ask for a better judge!

I tend to agree with you on 1) it is a GB and 2) we couldn't ask for a better judge should it be a contestBig Smile [:D]  Would the powers to be [FSM] consider the possability of a PT Boat contest?  Sponsor such a contest & offer prizes?Tongue [:P]

Maybe if the group build pans out well enough, they might down the road...but as it stands, we only have a few people interested.  If more than five people want to do a communal build from say, June 1st until October1st, we'll look at posting in the "group build" category.  Voting would then be from October 1st until the 15th, when the winner would be announced, or, we could just have Garth judge and announce the winner.  Up to you all !  I think it would be a good gb, and generate some interest in pt boats from other modelers (armor, planes, the like).

Of course !  Check around though, and see if you can't find a friend with a digital cam, or even look into purchasing a used one...I've seen them as low as 20.00 at yard sales, etc.

No matter what, the whole goal is to get more people into building PT boats.

Why?  Because PT boats ROCK !!!

Greg,
Count me in with the PT-109 Revell 1/72 kitSmile [:)] Why? Just because PT Boats are a little known bit of history which needs to be preservedApprove [^]  I'll keep my eyes open for a  camera. I know I need the software to run on this darn thing too.... But, I'll see what I can find in the mean time. Thanks.

Welcome aboard there GarthWink [;)]

Greg, I think we ought to start a list of names and incorporate them into a single post so we can see who all's interested in participating.  Those who (like you, me & Rick) are confirmed, and those who are possibles.  What do you think skipper?

If you guys do the group build and if you build either an 80' ELCO or a VOSPER, you might find John Lambert and my Allied Coastal Forces of WWII, volume 2 useful.  It contains hundreds of drawings, including:

o  general arrangement drawings for all types of Vospers

o  general arrangements for PT 103, 109, 174, 562, & 596, plus the 70' & 77' boats

o  weapons drawings for both Vosper and ELCO

o  lots of isolated details like the Packards, radar masts, camouflage schemes, etc.

While it has been reprinted, your best bet would probably be to get a copy through interlibrary loan.

Thanks Al, I have this book myself and can say it is highly worth findingThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Big Smile [:D]
there is the Victor Chun's "American PT Boats in World War II" that is also an informative book but, not as detailed as Allied Coastal Forces of WWII, vol.2
