Heller Golden Hind??
Posted by Cudamav on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 5:03 PM

Is it a decent kit?  I just found one at a LHS for 35 dollars and I remember touring this boat when I was much younger, so I thought it may be a fun build if the kit is decent.   I have never finished a sailing vessel model and I thought this one may be a good start because of the fond memories I had walking the ship in school.  Let me know what you guys think.

Also, if anyone has any pictures of the finished product, I would like to see it

Yes indeed, because it's in fact a reboxed Revell 1/96 Golden Hind, one of the best plastic sailing ship kits ever produced.

I was unaware that Revell made a 1:96 Golden Hind. However, Airfix make a 1:72 Golden Hind, and I would have suggested that would be more likely the source of the Heller kit. On searching for Revell Golden Hind, I found this:

I've just ordered a 1:72 Airfix Golden Hind from Modelsforsale.com, which had them on special for 10GBP.

Emir Is quite correct it is a rebox of Revells old kit.when Revell first came out with there kits they where what we consider box scale. As modeling got bigger modelers wanted scales to work with.So Revell put 1/90-1/96 scale on thier Mayflower,Golden Hind,Bounty,Santa Maria, and so forth, are the scales correct to the T probably not but they are close,The only better Golden Hind then the Revell/Heller kit is the 1/60 scale Imai kit.Which is copy of the Golden Hind II that I believe is in England.

The box had it listed as 1/200 I believe.  Is this the same kit?

Here is the box art that I found on Evil-bay

Anyone have any comments on the Airfix Golden Hind? I have this kit in my "stash" and it looks quite impressive in terms of detail (at 1/72 it's the largest in scale of all the Airfix classic ships range; it even has crew figures, something the rest of this range could do with) but I'm not sure about its accuracy or otherwise.
The description in the instructions suggest that the kit is an "educated guess" at the appearance of the original Golden Hind/Pelican, rather than being based on the modern Golden Hind II replica (as the Revell kit is).

The contents of the Golden Hind by Heller (in „Pirates et Corsaires“ box) is shown at

http://kitbox.free.fr/ouvreboite/OB0510_P/page2.html

It is at the bottom of the page.

I don’t understand French, but it seems to me that the description confirms the Revell origin of that kit.

Heller 52703 1/200 Pirates and Corsaires [ 2005 ] Under superb a boxart and with one limps quite solid which will be able to make it possible to arrange the model in the course of work, Heller proposes a resumption of the Hind Golden delicious to us of Revell pedigree with some additional parts to decorate it with various death's-heads. The announced scale, 1/200, are not in conformity bus Revell had in its time qualified this model of 1/87 what appears more suitable with the level of detail met which is rather spectacular: for your giving an idea even the slings intended to limit the recoil of the guns are planned! The staying is besides a purple passage bus if the scales of stay are provided all ready, all the remainder, and in particular all the system of man?uvre of the veils, is to be produced pulley pulley! The veils are besides the point of shade of this kit: realized in thermoformé it will ask for a large work of painting to be really convainquantes. Heller provides painting (BOF), adhesive tubes some (quite useful for the hull), a brush and two types of ropes. All the fans of Bore-Red and Eric can be delighted because this kit should offer to them what to produce the ship of their dreams.... Thanks with Heller for the supply of the kit presented here.
