PT Boat Help
Posted by Dubau on Sunday, July 9, 2006 7:35 AM

Hi all. I am getting the items I need to start my Revell's 1/72 PT Boat and wanted to know some things.

1. Does anyone know where I can get or how to make different Decals. I don't want it saying PT-109. I need other numbers.

2. This is a 1/72 model and have no idea where I could find more people to add to the boat. I am looking for....well not the regler kind of people you would find on a PT Boat. What scale in mm would I have to look for ?

3. Anyone know where I could find some color photos of a PT Boat ?

Well I think that's it.

Thanks all

Bud

1.  Try Loyalhanna Dockyard , if they don't have the decals, look for Woodland Scenics dry transfers in the railroad section of the local hobby shop.  You can apply the dry transfers to blank waterdlide decal paper, and the apply the homemeade decals to the model.

2.  Look for 1/72 scale armor figures, specifically US infantry or Marines from WWII.  You'll probably have to shave off some parts, like gun belt and back packs.

3.  There aren't many color pictures of PT boats, try looking at Knights of the Sea.

Bud,  There are some websites on the PT Boats with color pics
http://www.ptfnasty.com/

Also, T. Garth connelly had written the Squadron book "PT Boats in Action"
Al Ross co-authored Allied Coastal Forces of WWII" vol.2

Which PT are you planning on doing?

I figured thatBig Smile [:D] I too enjoyed that show over the years!!  Another good reference for the PT Boats is Victor Chun's book "American PT Boats in WWII" no colored pics but, lot of detailed photos, drawings, etc. iirc  PT-73 was a '77 footer. I have a link somewhere for the '77 Elcos & will add it here.

these are interior shots mostly but, go to the bottom of the page & click on the home page

If you want to build TV's PT73, just get the Revell "British Vosper" kit.  The TV boat (694 or 695, I never can remember which...) was one of the license-built Vospers that were ordered by the Soviets but never shipped.  The kit was originally released in the 1960s as "McHale's Navy PT73" and, I think, included figures of McHale, Parker, and maybe a couple others.  Despite some major fit problems, it's a fair representation of the type.  The real PT73 was a 78' Higgins.

Sure, that is the problem, price of this model is now 1000-2000 US$ and even more.

Please, note, that there is a review of the Revell Vosper PT boat here :

On the other hand, the current RoG boxing (not specifically the "McHale" version pictured above) appears to be widely available around the US$10.00 mark.

As for the figures. I know the PT Boat comes with 4 I think. But I am looking for something a little different.......

Now I might be able to use the figures the kit comes with but I will need a Hmmmm how can I put this " A  FAT Captain " to make into McHale. Would also like to find some Crew figures with no shirts and some girls in grass skirts. And maybe some gambling games.

For all the OLD people that read this you know what I am talking about LOL and for you younger people, you would have to see the show to beleave what they did on that boat. hehehehe

Thanks again all for all the tips and help

Y'll have a GREAT day

Try www.squadron.com.  They usually offer a large selection of figures in a variety of scales.  Also, www.walthers.com might be a source.  While 1/72 isn't a model railroad scale, 1/64 (S scale) is and these figures may be useful, although they'd be about 10% over-scale.   But, then, you did say you wanted a "...fat captain..."  Smile [:)]

I haven't the foggiest idea either but, I'd watch the military Book clubs & check out the History Channel website.
or other websites that deal in WWII Movies, etc. come to think of it, Blockbusters can special order it IF it's
available.

Hi again all. 1st off thanks for all the posts and links here. It helped :)

OK so I think I am going to start on my PT-73 and have some more things to ask.

This is the kit I am looking to get. This is the right one, right ?

I see on this boat that there is a life raft on it in the front. I know that the PT-73 did not have one. Does anyone know if this kit comes with a gun for the front ?

I also have seen pics on here and on the web on eather Green and Gray PT Boats. It looks like to me that from the old TV Shows that there boat was Gray.

I know I will have more to ask LOL sorry. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks again all

Y'll have a GREAT day

Anyone know from this 1/72 PT Boat, how big will it be in Inch's ?

I am thinking maybe to make it into a Diorama.

And yet another one, I want to make water, does anyone know of a good book that would help me with that ?

Thanks again all
