any tips for creating AIM 9X Lenses?
Posted by Reaper420 on Friday, June 6, 2014 12:56 AM
Was wondering if you guys had any tips for creating lenses for 1/48 AIM 9X lenses. Really want to add a touch of realism to them and make my F15K really pop. Any tips or suggestions are welcome. If you have a method please post a pictorial or a link.

There are these little lenses in clear, and different colors,  that are rounded and have silver back that I think might be perfect.  For the life of me I can't remember the name.  l have some and will look

Aren't the seeker head lenses on late model Sidewinders mirror finished and opaque, and not clear? I know that the early models had a clear lens but the "all aspect" missiles introduced a different type of lens.

Here's a pic of an AIM-9X up close:

It does appear to have a clear lens for the seeker head.  Have you thought about trying to cut off the tip and add a drop of clear drying glue?

Wing nut get back to me as soon as you find out. Those sound exactly like what I want to do.

stik I know what you mean. I googled the 9X and saw different lenses. Some mirror, some clear. Not sure which is the right one but ifigured cant go wrong with either.

Fly-n-hi I thought about that too but dont wanna botch it by it not being rounded enough or the correct shape and look. Can always try it though. Its just glue and if it does not turn out right I can always just scrape it off.

@stikpusher I know right. Kinda made me go cross-eyed just thinking about it. I figure to just skip the iridescent and do the clear. A 1/48 AIM 9X Sidewinder tip is waaaaay too small to try and do it. And plus because of the small size, the iridescent would be the size of a pin head and really not even visible.

Im gonna give it a try, if it doeant work out I saw some 1mm lenses on a hobby website that come in various colors, like blue or green. Figure I could just use them straight or try to cut them down really small and then lay some clear stretched sprue over or use a gloss varnish and build up the lens in layers.

Reaper they are MV Products lenses.  I wouldn't worry about the iridescent color.   You'll never see in small scale.

Maybe a little bit of iridescent paper from a sticker would work

I don't know what spectral band the X uses.  The dome and lens may be different material than earlier ones if it is longer wavelength.
