How to keep Epoxy resin from sticking to the mold?!?!?!?
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Sunday, October 15, 2006 2:58 PM

Ok, well Im working on an Omaha beach diorama, and what would Omaha be without the explosions of mortars hitting the water?  I could make them out of plaster or something, and paint it, but I think clear resins and things make much more realistic looking water, atleast for 1/35, so Im using 2 part Epoxy Resin.  I made a few qucik, but nice molds out of tinfoil, to capture the randomness of a plume of water blasting into the sky, as it would from a mortar or a depth charge or something.  So I poured in my resin, and let it sit and harden.  But when it was dry, no matter what I did I just could not get the tinfoil off.  I cut it in half, and It looked perfect, I just couldnt get the tinfoil off!! So my question is what could I use to coat the inside of my "mold" with so that when the resin dried I could pull it out? maybe spray on some sort of gloss or hairspray or something to make a slippery caoting bertween the resin and the mold? or would hose things just mix with the resin?  Also, Im sure you can buy multiple products specifically for this, but Im on a low budget, so are there any other things that would work?

Thanks guys, Ian

You need a mold release agent.  If your tin foil mold is fraggle, a brushable version would not be a good idea.  You may want to do a  search on the web for an aresol mold release spray.  I use the aresol type for my molds with very good demolding results.  Hope this helps.

Also a trick I learned in preventing my molds from sticking to the frame box is to mix your own mold release agent.  I mix a smll glob of petroleum jelly with a bit of mineral spirits until the consistancy is sprayable for the airbrush.  Once it is about the consistancy of half & half creamer, I decant this into the airbrush and spray the mold box in a couple thin coats.  My home-made mold release has essentially the same ingredients as the aresol spray cans, only you can make your own for pennies on the dollar!  Also this mixture will not in anyway harm your airbrush, gaskits, o-rings etc.  Actually I've noticed that when I'm cleaning the mix from my airbrush, it lubricates the paint passesges and needle a bit.  I used this technique for hundreds of molds and I've have excellent mold releasing results.  Give it a shot!

Petroleum gell, would that be the stuff used in fondue sets ? If so, would bbq starter liquid do the same job ?

I've been using the Bare Metal Foil mold release agent with excellent results. It's about $10 for a big spray can that lasts for a really long time. I've been on the same can for six months and I have been doing a lot of casting.
