Weathering and Photography
Posted by Gigatron on Sunday, April 22, 2007 11:09 AM

Hey gang,

Since this question isn't specific to any particular subject matter, I figured this would be the best place to ask.

I have a question about photographing your models and the weathering.  I've noticed that on my models, the weathering looks good and to scale to the naked eye, but doesn't show up in pictures.  I know in movies, they over do things like weathering (and makeup on actors) to compensate for the harsh lighting.  I've tried every trick I can think of.  I have a photo-tent to diffuse the light and I always have the same result.  The photos come out great, but the weathering never shows up.  I don't want to cake it on just for a photo, because I have to look at it the rest of the time.

So, does anybody here find themselves over-weathering to compensate for the camera.  Maybe layering it on a little heavier than you think you should so that it shows up in pictures.  Do you think it looks "off" while it's just sitting on your shelf?

Love to hear some oppinions and different takes on this matter.

Hey Fred

If the model has good lighting when being photographed, the weathering should show up.   Soft, even lighting should reveal the subtleties of the weathering just fine.  Harsh lighting or color balance problems would probably be more of a reason for the weathering to look a bit off.

But to answer you questions... me personally, I do not weather the model in anticipation of how it will looks in the pics afterward. I do it as it looks sitting on the shelf.
