                        Hi: I'm a newbie and I want to paint miniature portraits about the size of an egg or perhaps as big as 6" diameter and I can't afford all the wonderful ab's I have been reading about here. I thnk fineness is paramount and the badger 100 looks good as well as the badger 150 pro. The vega 2000 looks good and on it goes.

                        I'm tending towards the Badger 150, because of versatility and it's supposed to be excellent for fine art, but I feel there is something I 'm missing. I have no experience with ab's and am eager to get started.

                        I am also an avid WWII aircraft buff, particularly the Lufttwaffe and some of their more exotic creations.

                        Any help will be greatly appreciated

                        Thanks, GB, but Iwata stuff is out of my range. I would love to have one, but you know how it is.

                        Does anyone have fine art experience with the badger 150? Will it do fine facial expressions and shading?

                        Mike - if very fine detail is what you are after, the 100G or 100LG are what you are after. If you plan on using it for models as well the LG would probably fit your needs better. If just for the fine art the G or LG would be fine. (the main reason is the LG holds more paint than the G SF and SG.) but with a fine needle it would do very fine work with inks, the medium needle would allow more coverage for aircraft, and work better with aircraft paints.

                        The 150 is a siphon fed airbrush and if it is detail you want a gravity fed is MUCH more suited to your purposes...

                        Of all the people I know on this forum and others who use airbrushes there are maybe 2 or 3 who could manage to paint facial expressions on a portrait the size of an egg with an airbrush. What you are wanting to do and expecting from an airbrush is going to be very, very difficult to learn. I'm not trying to talk you out of it by any means, just pointing out that it is going to be difficult to do and take a lot of effort and practice to learn.

                        I have a Badger 100 which is pretty much the same as the 150 except it's gravity feed. Using the medium head and modeling paint I can get lines a little less than 1/16" wide. I have a fine head but have never used it.

                        Craig: Thanks for your information. I am proabaly NOT one of the 2 or 3 that can paint faces with an airbrush, but I bought a book a while ago by an airbrush aritist and he showed some of his work. THe portraits, which were a lot bigger than an egg, were unbelievably well done. He painted a strawberry with his ab and when I looked at it, I was struck with awe. You could taste it, it was so real and he tells all in the book. I must find it.

                        Mike, I agree with Tom's post regarding using a gravity feed AB. if you desire fine detail, I then a gravity feed AB is the way to go. good luck with the miniature portraits!

                        Thank you all. I think I am going to have to buy 2 ab's and one will most likely be a badger 100.
                        This forum is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in airbrushes. I don't know where else one would find this kind of info.
