Paasche D500 Compressor problem
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, November 26, 2005 3:42 PM
I've owned a D500 1/10 H. P. compressor with a paasche VLS airbrush for about 2 years now.  Today I was airbrushing for about 30 seconds when the compressor suddenly cut out.  I have never had this problem before.  I waited for about 10 minutes thinking that there was a chance that the compressor overheated.  After 10 minutes had elapsed, I plugged the compressor in and it was working normally.  I hooked up the airbrush and started spraying.  The second I stopped holding down the air button, the compressor cut out again.  I waited another 20 minutes but the compressor still does not work.  When I tried to plug it in, the compressor only makes a clunking noise and hums.     I've always followed all the directions in the instruction manual.  I've heard that if you repeatedly start the compressor with the bleeder valve closed the compressor will eventually short out.  However, I have never done this. Can you tell me what the problem might be and/or if there is a way to fix it?

Sounds like your compressor is on it's last legs. The same thing happens with my el cheapo harbor freight model. It just hums when I turn it on. Usually happens when its getting too hot.  I have found that if you open up the air flow and turn the compressor on and off and on etc., it will eventually start up. It's almost like the motor is not strong enough to get enough momentum to start the piston action. By opening up the air flow, the piston has less "work" to get going.

Disclaimer: This is pure "cause and effect" speculation on my part...but it hasn't failed yet.

Did you use this compressor a lot? They do, eventuallly, wear out.

Thanks for the tip.  Unfoutunatly, it isnt working.  I emailed the paasche guys so I'm still waiting to hear what they say.  I wouldn't say I used it alot.  probably only for 500 hours or so over the course of 2 years.

A buddy of mine had the same problem with his Paasche 500DSR.  Seemed like overheating to him, as he was using it in his garage in the summer.  He traded it in for a 2 gal. compressor & tank rig that he's very happy with.
