QUESTION ABOUT PRIMER
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 1, 2005 10:21 AM
Hello, I would like to ask a question about useing primer on my ship models. I am building a battlship of the YAMATO in 1/350 scale. I have never really used a primer befor and have heard allot of  people talk about the great results they have gotten by useing a primer. My problem is that I have not heard anybody talk about what is the best brand to use. I am useing TAMIYA ACRYLICS FLAT XF, PAINTS. I dont know if it matters what typ of paint you use to know if there is a typ of primer to use. since I am useing a acrylic paint would I have to use a primer that goes with that typ of paint. I do know the the primer makes the paint stick to the model better.  I would really be greatfull for any help that all of you can give me. I hope all of you have a great day, an even better holiday. Thank's again. Lonnie.

I'm mostly an airplane/airliner modeller but have used primer coats for a couple of reasons. First I use it to pick up any imperfections in the construction, ie. seams, dips, and blemishes I may have missed during initial construction. Next it provides a solid base for the paint to adhere to. I 'm not sure if mixing laquer based against enamel on acrylics will harm the subsequent base/main coats. I use Tamiya Fine surface primer, White and Light grey on my airliners followed by the gloss coats,(they are laquers) and I use a can of grey primer, purchased at Wal Mart for about $3.00 for any enamels that I work with. Some folks use silver primer. Seeing as your doing a ship I suspect you'll be priming the hull and the decks? I would suggest buying several different primer mediums and try them on scrap plastic and test the adhesion properties of your ultimate coats to see how they react. I hope this helps. Practice and trial and error will ultimately dictate what you find works for you. That's going to be a BIG ship. Post pics if you can.Big Smile [:D]

Lonnie: I use Tamiya acrylics as well. If I'm going to prime, I use Tamiya acrylics - yep, the same ones I'm finishing with - XF53 is what I usually use (grey). I have overpainted with every conceivable kind of finish including Alclad2 and have always had excellent results. The key to acrylics IMO is to make sure they are cured, not just dried. You can easily handle acrylics within hours of painting, but it's not cured. That takes at least a couple of days. Once acrylic is cured, you can apply any kind of finish on top. Of course, if you're finishing with acrylics, you don't need to wait for it to cure, just dry is good enough.

I use either krylon primer from Lowes or auto finishing primer from the auto zone down the street and they work fine... I paint about 99% of the time with acrylics and almost always use a primer with them...

Hey guys, I just got back from Hobby Lobby. I bought a bottle of model master acrylic grey primer. It is the only primer that they had for Acrylic paints. I hope you can use this brand since it is for acrylics, I don't see why it would not work. I wish that Hobby Lobby would carry Tamiya paints. It would save me allot of money on shipping. I will try the Krylon & the auto finishing primer as well. Thanks for that information. That also helps. Thank you all. Have a great night. Lonnie.
