Eduard Decals
Posted by JBRaider on Monday, February 13, 2023 9:50 PM

I had my first experience with the new Eduard decals today. A little nerve wracking but the end result is fantastic.

If you haven't used them they go down like normal decals but after they have settled in and dried (I left them overnight) you carefully peel the carrier film away. The result looks like painted on markings. A few decals were difficult to get started but once it started peeling they came of without a hitch.

Anyone else have any good/bad results with these?

If any, what decal solutions did you use?

Usually  Micro Set/Sol but i did try a little Sovaset on a tricky one and it worked okay.

After doing more of them I am not sure, they look really good but there is no room for error. I hade a few spots pull up probably by me being in too much of a rush, nothing that cant be touched up though.

What Eduard decals are those?  The reason I ask is that the ones I have used so far, I have just been applying them like normal decals.  I've never been terribly impressed with them so far because they all seem to have registration errors between color layers, but now I'm starting to wonder if I was applying them incorrectly.  None of the ones I have used so far had specific instructions telling me to peel away carrier film, so I'm wondering if that is only true of specific decal sets of theirs and not all of them.

Here's my understanding.  Sometime in the summer of 2020 Eduard changed their process for decals.  They either made them in house or went with a provider of digital print over silk screen.  I'm not sure.  It became a happy accident that someone discovered you can peel away the film.  I don't think it was ever supported by Eduard.
If you have decals before 2020 it's nothing to worry about.  Again, this is what I've heard from a few guys.  I haven't tried the new ones.
