The snow is gone (almost)
Posted by Don Stauffer on Friday, March 29, 2019 2:48 PM

The snow is gone from the area of my backyard where I do my sunlit photo background shots.  I'll be able to shoot in sunlight again!  We could get some more- snow in April is not unheard of around here, but at least nothing that will stick is still in the forecast.

I am working on a 1:72 DC-4.  I'll have to get a much bigger print of my commercial airport picture to shoot the -4.  I guess I'll send the image to one of those poster printing places.

Hi. I’m new here, just signed up the other day. I was scrolling thru the threads and your’s caught my eye as I’m contemplating building an airport for photo ops. If it wouldn’t be asking too much, could I ask you post a photo of your airport so I can get an idea of what to consider while I think about my future airport. Any help would be appreciated.

I have three photos I use, a WW1 era field, a contemporary civilian feeder (smaller non-airline) field, and a big city airport.  I am assuming you would want the big one. I do not have a photo of a military field.

Don,

Sure hope your airport photo has de-icing equipment built in!  Big Smile

This has been a wicked week!  MSP was closed several times, but the airport did not get as much snow as people to the Northwest of city.

I missed my chance- didn't get any pictures before the snow hit.  Now it will be awhile before I can get out in backyard again!

It started snowing at six in the morning in Chicago. It is not expected to end until seven this evening. So far we have about six inches of really wet snow.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

I'm glad we are missing that one.  I am getting tired of putting my heavy boots on in the morning just to go out and get the paper!

Hi Don, thanks for the response, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I got lucky, I managed to get a series of shots of Miami Int’l from the south side by runway 9-27 that I can join together to make a panoramic background for my airport. Also got some good runway shots using Google Earth that I read about in an earlier post, that was a great tip and thanks to the guy who posted it. Hope it all turns out looking good.

Yep, Google earth is a good resource.  It can be used to make the apron or runway. It is also useful for a base if you are making a plane model in flying mode.  For those I pick something that is relevant to the aircraft.  For instance, for my model of the airship Akron I used a Google Earth image of the naval base at Lakehurst NJ, the main US airship base.  Now, admittedly the base looks somewhat different now than it did during the time that the ship was in existance, but most people comment favorably on that base.

I live in a northwest suburb of Chicago. On Saturday afternoon/evening we got about five inches of wet snow. It was a real mess to drive in that snow.
