Hydraulic line material for 1/35 scale models
Posted by wadams on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 1:41 PM

Hi Modeling world

I am in search for material to use to make hydraulic lines for vehicles such as construction equipment, military vehicles, etc. Some models already come with the tubing for them, but some do not such as the HMEE-1 loader/backhoe.

If anyone has any input as to what and where I could find it I would greatly appreciate it.

Regular electrical wire of the right diameter can be used...but I prefer solder or lead wire (of the type used in fishing) since it will hold a shape more easily.

There's a great lead wire size assortment here.

Dead soft copper wire sold for jewelry making is also a good choice.  I recently bought some from Amazon that was an assortment that ranged from 18 to 28 gauge.  It was easy to work with and held its shape really nicely.  Used some to make leg restraint lanyards on a 1/32 scale K-36D ejection seat.

You could try Hobby Lobby or Michaels. That's where I get most of my wires.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Tamiya sells the tubing the provide in their bike kits as part  of their 'detail up' series.  A few different diameters.  Here's an example:

Go to a fly fishing / fly tying shop.   If none in your area try BassPro or Cabellas.   If all else fails try Amazon.  Fly tyers use lead wire to weight many of their patterns.

I have several spools.   It typically ranges from 10 thousandths up to 40+ thousandths.  Great for hydraulics.  Also good for brake lines, electrical cables, and other such plumbing needs.

The one problem I might see is that it lacks a model manufacturer's logo  Idea

Indeed, both are great for that stuff.  I now find a wider selection of wire from craft stores than from electronic supply places.  Look for it in the jewelry section.
