"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." - Galatians 2:16
Galatians 2:16 (from a book of the same name in the Bible written by God through the early missionary Paul) is a very direct verse speaking on the topic of salvation's requirements according to God Himself. Note that this verse is extremely succinct yet contains a full description of true salvation (faith in Jesus' finished work on our behalf) juxtaposed against a leading "competitor" to true salvation (dependence on an individual's own good works). This verse clearly shows that faith in Jesus is superior to individuals’ works and that faith in Jesus is the sole means of salvation.
Suggested further readings on the topic of salvation include the verses Romans 2:8-9 and the entirety of the Book of Romans, respectively. (Please note that confusion exits for some in comparing the above verses with James 2:14-26. However, this confusion is put to rest in reading the context of James 2:14-26. James was not attempting to contradict Paul by declaring that works are necessary for personal salvation; rather, James clarifies that true faith in Jesus - true trust in Jesus and His work on our behalf - will RESULT in good works done out of gratitude for the free gift of salvation received through true faith. As an example, anyone can say they believe in a trapeze artist and his abilities, but only those willing to piggyback the man across Niagara Falls display true faith in him. James speaks of faith driven works - not works driven “faith”.)
The situation of false contradiction displayed above is a classic example supporting the comparison and contextual principle. Any confusion between seemingly contradictory verses within the Bible can be resolved by comparing Biblical text with other Biblical texts and by keeping verses couched within their context.
