forum software?
Posted by MaxPower on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 2:47 PM

Just wondering if FSM has ever considered using better forum software? The current forum is no where near as nice a vBulletin.

I know vBulletin isn't free though, as I assume this software is.

Would something like that be possible?

Hello,

FSM's online team serves fourteen other Kalmbach publications. The team's consistently working to upgrade all of the company's Web sites and forums, including FSM's.

So it's only a matter of time before we start using better software. To get a glimpse of what's to come, check out the forums of our sister publicatoins, Scale Auto and Model Railroader

Fear change! Too much flashy advertising and unneeded stuff like that to keep my interest.  I like the extra room for the meat and potatoes in the forum not the commercials! Grumpy [|(]

Kelly, I sincerely hope that you don't mean that you're going to be going to the Scale Auto format any time soon? Banged Head [banghead]

Not with that crappy prohibition on no more than three photos per post?! One of the main reasons I don't frequent that forum much is becasue of that stupid rule. Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]

Also, I SINCERLEY WOULD URGE YOU to put the change to a forum vote--seriously! The guys who are the lifesblood here--the regulars whom really "live" and hang here regularly and post some of the best work, would be pretty shocked, and possibly turned right off if you go and radically change the EXCELLENT SOFTWARE AND FORMAT that you already have here,

Every time I think about this forum's format and interface changing, it just about makes me physically sick. I mean, WHY?!?!

If it ain't broken, DON'T "FIX" IT!! ( and it ain't "broken"!!)

C'mon Doog, stop beating around the bush and let us know what you really think. Wink [;)]

I've seen worse looking forums, and I take part in better looking, but change for change's sake wouldn't be worthwhile.

So long folks!

I'm with Doog on this as well. I'm fairly new here still, but it's like a fourth home to me so to speak, after my own home, the deer woods, the sky. I had checked out a few other forums...no joy! I came upon this one, and seamed to fall into place. You've got a great thing going here, why change it?

It wasn't broken the first time either, but that's when the current forum software came to be.  This forum used to run on Snitz software, if I remember correctly, but several years ago someone convinced them to change to this Community Server "Stuff" that they have now.  It took forever to get most of the bugs out and get it this usable and even so it is still FAR from being as user-friendly as the original software was.

Hi Guys,

When the forum software changes, it'll be an improvement. Believe me!

Also, a software change does not mean a policy change – FSM has no plans to implement Scale Auto's rules and regulations.

Thanks for all the enthusiastic feedback.

Please don't change it. It works fine. Seems like most website/forum upgrades only add more advertising and make it more difficult to find what I came for. I agree with Doog. Leave it alone. Also, I get charged by AT&T on my DSL by how many electrons I use per month. More complicated sites/forums runup my bill. I, in effect, get to pay to view the ads on the website whether I want them or not. Is that being Customer Friendly? I rarely go to Scale Auto's forum since the change for the above reasons. More is not always better.

Kelly, sorry, I have to put myMy 2 cents [2c] in. The book "Computers for Dummies" is too complicated for me. When I came to this forum I loved it because it was just what I was looking for. IT is so easy to use (besides all the great people here). I have to say "Please don't change anything".

Guys,

I'd love to assure you nothing on the forum will ever change. But, er, I can't. Technology, as we know, marches on.

Thanks, as always, for your thoughts.
