What I LIKE about the new forum!
Posted by Bgrigg on Saturday, December 19, 2009 12:22 PM

The thing I like most about the new forum, is that the same PEOPLE that made the old forum so great, are still here!

The color doesn't offend me, nor does the layout. I don't get hung up on how a forum appears, I'm more concerned with the content. Content is KING, not the color of the pixels.

The spell checker is a great tool, I hope more people will take advantage of it. I like being able to PM with more than one person at a time. Being able to embed videos is a nice feature. I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure I will given time.

The changeover was a bit bumpy, probably a lot more bumpy than FSM wanted, but I've lived through MUCH worse, and I'll live through this. I hope the additional ad revenue fills the coffers and allows FSM to continue providing the excellent and FREE resource. Sure I had to learn a couple of new things to use the site like I'm used to, but learning stuff is good. It keeps my brain working properly!

All in all, I'm pleased with the new site. I'm hopeful that over the next few weeks that some of the still outstanding issues get resolved. And I hope that those who were offended far too easily and stormed off, grow up and come back.

So long folks!

I wouldn't care about the color either if it didn't cause eye strain and a headache after 10 minutes.

I agree Bill!  It was a bumpy start, but things are rapidly starting to smooth out.  It's been a much easier transition thanks to you I might add! Bow Down

I don't really remember the Older forum format so I can't tell if this is better or not. I do like the fact that there is a great weatlh of info from some really talented people here. I haven't found it too difficult to navigate and seem to find what I am looking for when I come here.

Just my half cent (adjusted for inflation in the US)2 cents

There's a spellcheck?

Yup! Firefox should support it automatically (I don't see the icon in FF), and IE needs an add-on called ieSpell (Free download), which gives you this icon:

clicking on it checks your post and makes suggestions. Firefox underlines the misspelled word and right clicking on that gives you suggested changes.

I will give them one thing - they didn't nuke all the old posts like some places will when they go for a total redesign.

My other dislikes stand, although as a non-subscriber I fully realize that Kalmbach gives them no weight at all. Onward through the tiny-type fog!

Well at least the text is larger on most posts. I'm guessing the text size option reflecs the size of the text you type, rather than read but I guess most everyone has selected a larger size or the default has been made one of the larger sizes. That is helping my eyes quite a bit, now I'm up to 15-20 minutes before my eyes start to go buggy. Now if we can just get some colors with a little more contrast.

Guys, I feel bad that you're having trouble viewing the forums. If the Zoom feature (Ctrl & + or - ) doesn't help, it may be the default text size in your own browser.

I just created a tutorial to set that, as well as changing the default color of the website. Give it a look and see if it helps!

Thanks for the efforts you have been making, it would be nice to see the same concern from the webmaster.

I'm good with the text size now, unfortunately I'm not finding any of your suggestions actually changing the colors. At least with the larger font I can manage to read 3 or 4 posts before needing a break. It is the light green, light grey and lighter grey that does it I think, just not enough contrast to let my eyes focus right I guess.

The Scale Auto site uses the same software and set up but with different (more contrasting) colors. I don't have the eye strain issues there I do here, so it has to be the colors they picked here. I'm not sure why they won't offer an alternate color scheme, since it can obviously be done.

Anyway, thanks again for trying to help people fix the forum issues.

Aaron, you're very welcome. I probably have more free time than the webmaster! Wink

I'm not sure why they aren't moving faster on some of the issues the website still has. I expect a combination of Christmas holiday time and justifying more time and effort on a changeover that should have gone smoother than it did.

Well lets hope so. While I don't care for the ad heavy format they picked, upgrades are inevitable. My main frustration is my limited ability to use the site. This was one of my more frequented sites, but I've had to cut way back since the change in forum software.

Aaron, what browser are you using? The tutorial I linked to above should have helped you change the color to a more acceptable choice, and using a plugin like Adblock Plus could eliminate the ads, as well.

I'm using IE8, I tried changing the default colors which did nothing, and the don't use the site colors option, not only would screw up all the other sites I'm not having trouble with, but it removed all the colors on the site making a very bright screen to read (even worse than the present issue).

I've used Firefox, and its Ok, but I don't really find it an improvment over IE. I know a good part is just being familiar with IE's quirks while FF brings a whole new set of quirks to learn. Toast

I'll give them some time to iron out the bugs, they have fixed some of the more pressing issues like the speed. I don't have any plans to bail out on the place just yet.

Mayybe someone is listening, it seems like the light grey has become a little darker, or the part of my brain that was bothered has succumbed. Propeller

Either way, I seem to be able to deal with the forum better now.
