Displays and Cases sub-forum?
Posted by CN Spots on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 11:02 PM

I was wondering if there would be any interest in adding a displays and cases sub-forum to the site?  I don't think they fit in anywhere that currently exists and they are certainly an important part of this hobby.  This could cover things like construction, plans, materials, techniques and options for different methods of displaying our builds.

I'd love to see something like that.  I'd love to see some good, low-cost ideas.  I saw one link where you could have custom display cases made which would be perfect for my big F-89s.  However, the cases started in the $90 range.  Ouch!

There have been many, many posts on this subject over the years.  There have been cheap ideas, such as Goodwill, consignment shops and having them made in High School wood shops to your instructions, to places like Ikea and woodworking outlets to neighbors that do it for a hobby.  Loads of pics were posted too.  Do a search and see what you come up with.

Another idea is to keep looking out for stores that are going out of business. I was in the planning stages of building one but then I saw this one for $200 at an antique store closing its doors.

Just the lighting fixture, mirror, glass and hardware  would have ran way over $200! It pays to keep your eyes open.

plasticjunkie;

That is an awesome cabinet.  I am looking for something like that and coming up empty.  I am in Phoenix, AZ.

John

I know exactly what you mean. Keep looking and when you least expected it you will find one. I was just about to start gathering my materials to build mine when this one popped up out of thin air. The wife suggested going to an antique shop that was closing down to check and found it there.

The guy sold 3 of these within 45 minutes while I was there and he had about 3 more. I would have bought another one but figured this one and the others I have is enough for a while anyway.

Maybe it would be kind of neat to have a pinned folder on the forum where people could post pictures of their display cabinets complete with either plans or where/how they got them.  I think how we display our models is just as much a part of our hobby as anything else.

I would love to see a section for this.

It's a big issue for me, and I have just finished my basement and want a full wall of display cabinets.  But by getting them piece meal, you won't match them, and trying to buy custom stuff is more than a fortune.

I have no skill to build one, and don't really know anyone that can do it as a hobby.

Please be sure to include lighting.

I have also been looking at LED strip lighting sets as I intend to add clear "window sheathing' in order to enclose a set of IKEA shelves for displaying my larger models.

.

Might also be a good idea to add dust prevention and dust removal comments as I must presume even the enclosed cases accumulate dust each time they are opened.Hmm

I quite agree.
I have been examining one display case using clear acrylic shelves at a local thrift shop.
The case is not for display, but the shop is due to move to a new location.

Geez, I have just always used relatively cheap white particle board bookcases, or have made them myself in custom sizes from the same board available at Lowes. Plexiglass or simply clear vinyl the front to keep dust out.

Recently we found decent white bookcases with optional attachable doors and extra shelves at IKEA for around $150 if I recall. I can fit about 50 armor models or more in just one of them.
