Like Button and Comment Notification
Posted by Tickmagnet on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 10:04 AM

I belong to another forum unrelated to modelling and I would like to make a couple of suggestions they do there that I think might be beneficial on this forum.

First, how about a like button on comments.  I'll give a few examples of how this would be beneficial.

A member posts a thread looking for help on a project. Without fail you will end up with ideas repeated in that thread and a lot of different suggestions. How will a new member decide which is most likely to work. Well if you look at the "like" comments recieved and you notice one has more than the others perhaps that would be the one most likely to work. At least it might help with the decision making in that aspect and may help cut down on repeated suggestion posts.

A new member posts a new work they just did. You'll get a few comments but more views than comments. Not a big deal except to maybe a young person trying to get started with this hobby. Instead of just a few comments imagine how much more motivated they would be to continue if there were 100 plus likes along with the comments. That can go a long way and not everyone feels the desire to comment even if they like what they see but clicking a like button is quick and easy. I mention this one after the post the other day from another member about the young kid at the hobby store and the grumpy old guys deflating his excitment with negativity. Just a simple click on a like button can go a long way to keeping people involved. Not everyone will make comments but they may just click a like button.

Now onto comment notification. Apparently the only notification of someone commenting on any thing you post is e-mail. That's cool if you want to use it but what if when you came to the forum and right up where your avatar is located there is also a notification of replies to your post as well as notification if someone quotes you. Then you just have to click on it and it takes you to the thread where the comment was made. Sure is a lot easier than trying to remember every thread you made a comment on and I think it can be instrumental in increasing forum activity

So there ya go. If this is available and I just haven't found it on here or it's been done and eliminated for some reason, then please let me know because I personally don't live my life around e-mail. I usually only check it once a day if I remember and forget about it after that, but I come here much more often than that and it just may be the same for others looking to participate in forum activity.

Now back to the bench I go.

Really? Do you expect FSM own IT guys to do that? After the last fiasco of their update that caused folks getting locked out for weeks on end? Or did you forget about that incident.

Until they have competent IT staff that knows what they’re doing, I may be fine with it... IF it finds it constructive. But if it caused another glitch and folks get locked out again, that’ll be the death of FSM’s forums.

@Blacksheep

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject, looks like you were edited. In the email I got with your post, you mentioned dislikes causing problems. I never mentioned any thing about a dislike button, nor do I see the point of even considering a dislike button and I doubt anyone else on here would want a dislike button. That sounds more like something facebook would do. I've never seen one on any forum I've used and I'm sure it's because of the reason you mentioned and absolutely the reason I would never suggest one.

Sorry to hear folks got locked out for so long. I just cleared my cookies and logged right in during that issue. I believe it was an email from the staff at FSM that suggested clearing cookies which I did and it worked. Of course this has happened at one time or anohter on every forum and website I frequent, so I wouldn't blame the staff at FSM. It's just the fact of the internet that this will happen at one time or another.

I like the LIKE button,it does help eliminate some of gratuitous attaboy posts which I can be guilty of.Sometimes you enjoy a build or just want to show your appreciation for a build with out a comment.

But they don't seem to take any suggestions from us anyway around here that I can remember.

I edited my own response, FSM didn’t.

During the lock out, FSM’s “band-aid” solution was to clear one‘s cookie cache and / or go incognito using another browser. Neither worked.

That would have been a bummer, it is impossible to understand how one thing works for one person but not another. Oh well it's life on the internet.

Yes it does help. I read a comment today I just wanted to click like, as in agreement with what was suggested, but I couldn't and there is no point to make an I agree with so and so post. Just seems like overkill. Even if they won't listen I guess it never hurts to suggest.

Thanks for the suggestion! I like it too (get it! Stick out tongue ). I'm putting together a list of wants from our forum users to give to our website designers and this idea will definitely go on it.

Without fail you will end up with ideas repeated in that thread and a lot of different suggestions.

I don't think 'like' buttons will cure this.  Rather, folks actually reading the discussions would cure it. To me, 'forum' indicates an exchange of ideas. Reading an original post then hitting the reply button and typing a response isn't an exchange of ideas, it is  sending a message that nobody else's comments matter.

I'm not saying I don't like your idea, it has merit. But my fear is it would just make the bit about folks not reading threads worse.

Just my 2 cents, I'm not saying I'm right or wrong. I am opining. That's all.

Nothing wrong with opining. I dont' think anything will cure repeated comments on threads, it's just one of those things that happen on every forum I've ever been on. I've probably been guilty of it myself. I just know the forums I go to that have the functions I mentioned seem to be more active and more user friendly.

Tickmagnet, making the forum more active and user-friendly would make us all happy. I'm right with you, whatever it takes to get us there. I'm not a fan of 'like' buttons, but if they help accomplish the goal, I'd be willing to give it a go.
