ad banners
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 11:51 PM

I"m using a 56K modem, just so you know.

Do the advertising banners always have to load first? Couldn't the forum topics load first once in a while, like every other time? I'm sure that Internet Hobbies and Pacific Coast Hobbies paid FSM lots of $ so as to get their ads on the top of every loaded page, but I'm getting tired of seeing them 'pop up' first all the darned time. This new website just takes all the more time, for someone like me with a 56k modem, to get any page loaded and displayed. It gets frustrating after a while. I participate on some other websites where there isn't as much 'stuff' to load on every page. Much quicker and honestly more user friendly. OK...my rant is over for now!

Get an ad blocker. Then they won't load at all! Firefox has one available as a plug in that works pretty good.

So long folks!

Just remember that those banner ads make this site free.

Yes, but when was the last you clicked on one?

I'm on highspeed, so it takes but a moment to load, and I've long since learned to ignore them. I clearly remember dial up and hated the ads with a white hot intensity. If people leave because it takes longer to load your webpage the ads won't be around much longer either. A balance must be possible. Loading the ads last would be a good solution, but until then block them.

So long folks!

Bill-Dan whispers-advertising doesn't really work. It's just a necessary evil. You could throw Pepsi ads at me all day-I'll still drink Coke.

Then <Bill whispers too> let's have them load last for the people with dialup.

I don't find a difference between pepsi and coke.

I'll second the "just block them" suggestion. When the forums load for me, all I see is a big maroon rectangle with nothing but "Finescale.com" in it. Even the subscription options are blocked and appear as only text blocks such as [give a gift!]. Ad blockers are the bomb.

There, there, Michael, there, there. Clown [:o)]

My concern is with slow loadup times for dial up users. If they aren't getting here they're not seeing any content OR ads, are they? If it's any consolation to you I read every ad in the magazine, looking for ideas and things to put on my wish list.

Trowlfazz, I'll have to respectfully disagree with you.  Of course ads can sway.  In most cases, the information provided is delivered in a manner exactly designed to sway opinion, create desire/need and gain consumer dollars for the advertiser.  Does it always work?  Absolutely not, but ad campaigns that don't work go the way of the buggy whip in short order.  Advertising is an enormous industry and the dollars being spent wouldn't be being allocated if it weren’t working.

On a personal note, speaking as the father of young, TV watching, "I'm lovin' it" humming children, I can personally attest to advertising's ability to sway.

Ah, Semantics!

To inform is to sway, if the person being informed changes their mind because of the information. The advertising that is directed at children is more akin to brainwashing than anything else.

Advertising is a necessary thing, some would say evil. I work in the print industry, and I love junk mail. I get it, pat it on the head and recycle it, glowing with warmth knowing that somewhere some designer, pressman and bindery worker, and yes Account Sales Consultants!, have meaningful jobs.

So long folks!

I run Ad-Aware (free software) on my laptop and it blocks all of the banner ads on most pages I visit. My laptop runs off my home's wireless network so I do that so pages load faster.
