model chat (attn: dvoss/Laurence Hansen)

I don't know if its been discussed before (it probably has) but what I'd like to see on the site is a chat. Is this at all possible?

Great idea, Abrams. Believe it or not, it's something that I'd really like to see on here, too. Possibly set up chat rooms based on subject or era? Not sure what kind of server space it would take, but the idea has definite merit.

Dave and I have discussed adding a chat feature to the site--a fair number of people have asked for it. Given the size of the FineScale.com community and the amount of tiime members spend on the site, I think we can build a very good case for "modelers' chat." We're looking into software, system requirements, etc. As you might expect, however, any plan we come up with would have be approved (and paid for Wink [;)]) by our corporate chain of command. So we're probably not going to have chat tomorrow, but I'd call it a "definite possibility" in the future.

Geez, am I sounding like something out of Scott Adams's "The Way of the Weasel" or what? [:0]

It would HAVE to have moderators.

Chat is something I'm willing to push for if there's enough interest among the forum members and we can muster the technical resources to do it (after we take care of some other lingering issues on the site that need fixing). We certainly want to provide the features our community members (i.e., our customers) want, but I have to confess, the allure of "chat" escapes me. It seems like e-mail and discussion forums should cover any necessary group or one-on-one communication. How is chat useful?

My other question is why is it so necessary that FineScale.com provides it? I mean, there are other providers of free chat functions (e.g., Yahoo, MSN) on the internet. Don't they pretty much have it covered? Or is it a matter of convenience--you don't have to register at other sites and move over to them to carry on a chat session?

Enlighten me, folks, while I work on my sales pitch.

like was said previously, I would like to ask a quick question and get a bunch of answers right away. (real convenient during the evening when your working on something and you need to now something right away, to be able to keep working) I would also like to ask specific people questions, instead of posting to someone specific (which is kinda against the rules). yes I am not registered anywhere else and don't really want to. chat here would be very convenient. as in regards to e-mail, I have it blocked in my profile, because I am with my whole family (email address) and don't want a ton of messages clogging it up. (although I have corresponded briefly with several members).

Lawrence,

I don't know how many times I've been interested in a thread and forget to click the 'notify me ...' option and loose track of it, or post a question and wait days for a reply. Sure, not a big incovenience, but it can be frustrating. Real-time Q&A, or plain 'ol banter would be very useful (and fun).

As to why FSM should provide it? Because all 25k of us are right here. Yeah, we could go to other chat rooms but how to coordinate discussions? Post in Community "I'll be in (chat room) at (time) on (date)"? Then wade through messages from lonely singles and poodle owners to hook up with other modelers. (And probably read - "HEY! Who let all these kids in here?") Thats IF anyone read the post. Set up a poll and see how many respond, I bet you would be suprised.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I think if we could get every one to a chat somewhere, else no one would be here. Don't get me wrong I still would read and enjoy the forum because it's nice to go back and see all the posts. I think the biggest draw back would be if I wanted to chat with someone like J-hulk because for the time diffrents.

Ok let me add my 2 cents. Yahoo chat is a joke...tons of spam and porn advertising. MSN is no longer free. Many of us currently use IM programs such as MSN,Yahoo,ICQ or Trillian which rolls them all into one program. I would like a chat room for several reasons....number one you can chat in real time with more than just those who choose to reply to a thread.
Chat also contributes to a sense of community which is rarely found on the internet like it is here. Sure there are chat rooms everywhere...and on all sorts of topics but show me 2 that are related to models or modeling directly....OTHER than PSAB which is a CAR Chat only....They might exist and I might not know about them...but Ive not seen them...
I realize Kalmbach and the Website has priorities it would make a nice addittion to an already great community. Some people can not download the IM programs and use them for certain reasons whether they dont know how or their machine wont support them. I dont know of anyone who cant use a Java Chat client though...
Just my insight and opinion

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Well said guys! I love the FSM chat feature and I'm pulling for it to become a regular feature. The main thing that draws people to this site is the people. We truly get a sense of community by being a part of this place. The chat room will strenghten the feeling of community and I hope someday we may see special guests with something to teach. Imagine a Q & A session with someone in the manufacturing sector or a fellow modeler who wants to share his/her knowlege and skills. Will a chatroom be a plus or a minus? A big plusWink [;)]

It's great to see enthusiasm and support for this. Even better, I've seen some very good and valid reasons to help justify chat. Keep them coming.
