Some thing new from something old!

HI FSM...first I would like to thank you for providing us plastic junkies with such an awesome  magazine, website and forum. I've been at this a few years now and really love each issue that I've picked up. Plus I have always enjoyed the friendly atmosphere here in the forum. I was wondering, if you've considered doing an article on RE-Habbing an old model. Perhaps you already have since there are some considerable gaps in my collection, but maybe it's time for a revisit. I have found many poorly painted or constructed models since I have been modelling and I hate to give up on these relics. So an article done in the traditional FSM quality (showing stripping, dissassembling and kitbashing) would sure be a helpful and interesting read. Let me know.

Thank you and keep up the good work!

Sincerely
Jaysun!

Hi Jaysun,

Saw your post and thought I'd let you know that, when I get the chance, I want to do a story on that very topic. My son and I built a 1/72 scale B-36 when he was in 4-H, and though it was spectacular in size it left a lot to be desired. It sat on top of the freezer in our basement for many years until 2006, when I returned to FSM after a 10-year hiatus. First order of business when I get to it will be to raze the embankment atop the fuselage where the seam was poorly covered!

For several years the canopy laid where it had fallen in back of the freezer. I knew it was there, and that it wouldn't go missing if I left it there. Sure enough, I scooped it up when I brought the model into the office. Nothing escapes my wife, however -- she saw me carrying the plane out to the car and called after me: "Did you get its uh, uh, thing, the, uh, hat?" "Yes, dear, I got its hat."

So, one restored Peacemaker coming up -- with original hat.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  Yes, That is Funny - The , uh , hat what a classic line... Im also looking forward to that up coming feature. I have restored several older "car" models  by cleaning them up in a Dip of Simple Green. The oldest was a kit I had built back in 1982, the rattle can paint came off smoothly. With some squadron green added and new paint, bare metal the Johan OOP kit looks great once again.

Jayson, It is a Non-Toxic & Biodegradable All Purpose Cleaner Concentrate.  I have been using it for years with no problem. I keep a tupperware type container large enough to submerse a 1/24 - 1/25 car body in.  In a matter of hours the paint will slip off. I go ahead and leave the project in for 24 hrs. An old toothbrush will get the paint out of the tough spots. The rest of the paint just rolls off. After about 5-6 different strippings I notice it seems to loose its Pep. So I then just dump it in the toilet and let it work there ! You can find it in the US at most Grocery stores, Hardware , Discount ~ in the cleaner or Automobile sections.Johan CutlassSorry I did not take a Before Picture, this is the after stripping and repaint.

Would it take off primer? And are the windows and clear parts any good after that?

Jayson.....I believe Summit has posted a recent tutorial on his method for using Simple Green. Many here use the stuff.

Hey Summit, I don't know if I would recommend dumping all of that down the toilet? With all that dissolved paint, lacquer, enamels or whatever in it, that sounds like a pretty toxic brew to dump into the sewers--you better check with where your sewers empty to avoid lettiing all of that poison into the ground, or worse, into the watershed!
