Copyright ?

Can you scan a picture from a book that is copyrighted & post the scan in this forum?  I'm thinking maybe not.

Thanks,

Gary / 1SG

Hi Gary,

Scans from copyrighted materials are not allowed in the forum. Here's further info:

Avoid transmitting any information, software, or other material that violates or infringes upon the rights of others, including material which is an invasion of privacy or publicity rights or which is protected by copyright, trademark, or other proprietary right, or derivative works with respect thereto, without first obtaining permission from the owner or right holder.

ms shaw,

does this mean i cant scan a picture out of a book? i mean i know what your saying but i've done this in the forum b4 (not thinking about copyright issues at all Dunce [D)]). i'd just like to thoroughly understand it in my head b4 something happens. also, what's the "punishment" for said actions??? again, i have to plead dumb on what i was doing...certainly not trying to cause issues. thanks in advance! Big Smile [:D]

Follow this simple guideline and you'll be OK: Don't publish any scanned photos of copyrighted material (eg. book, magazine, etc.) in the forum.

Penalty for doing so? The owner of the copyright could take legal action.

Hope this makes practical sense.

I could be wrong, but I believe that a photo can be scanned and posted for discussion purposes as long as you state where it came from.

Conceptually it's the equivalent of me bringing a reference book to a local hobby club meeting to discuss details/accuracy of a kit etc.

Actually, since anyone can copy a jpeg to a desktop, the equivalent to posting a scanned image in the forum would be bringing a reference book to a club meeting ... and photocopying and distributing a page.  It's a can of worms FSM would like to avoid.

Makes sense.

How about posting scans from kit instructions when you have questions about assembly or the parts?

Nope, not even kit instructions.

You can find a ton more information about copyright law here:

Yikes, that greatly reduces the "usefulness" of the forums. We do that stuff all the time when asking for help with a particular step, or when pointing out errors in kit instructions and even sometimes when doing build logs. Hmmm.... I'm going to have to re-think how I post things. Thanks for the info Kelly.
