Flat coat over gloss black

i had a similar problem with a black 1/24 scale sprint car, painted it, put decals on, weathered it, sprayed the clearcoat and turned almost everything white....my clearcoat was old, that was the problem with mine.

Thanks for the help guys, today i mucked around and tested a few things out. whilst doing experiments i came across a Vallejo flat clear coat and gave that a try. after several tests with thinning the coat down i found the result i was after on a black surface. i then sprayed the plane and all is good :)

tomorrow i shall continue on with the last few things and then start work on the base. when the plane is finished I'll try to get some pix up!!

If it's simple hazing, this is very easily fixed. Apply a coat of clear gloss and the hazing should disappear.

If your flat coat went on clear and wet and dried to a hazy finish, I would be leaning towards insufficient mixing/stirring of the paint before reducing (thinning). At a stretch, humidity may cause similar problems.

My flat coat of choice is Gunze's Aqueous Clear Flat H-20 - luckily this is still widely available here in Australia.

I haven't used Life Color clears, but unless you happen to have got some of a bad batch it's possible that the clear isn't the problem. A couple of things come to mind;

Mixing - some clears require quite a bit of mixing & without it the flatting agent in the clear will often produce a whiteish finish.

Distance / pressure - if your spraying distance or air pressure were excessive this would cause the clear to start to dry mid flight, when this happens the paint is too dry to level out & create a smooth finish.

It might be worth experimenting a little away from the subject to see if you can get better results, if you can, you may find that hitting your F-117 with another coat of clear will sole the white finish you have.
