How does one delete a post?

I just hit the "edit" icon at the bottom of my post (the little pencil), go up and delete all the text except for a single character, such as a period, and hit post.  It leaves you with a blank posting except for a period.  I have not been able to find any other way.

Only the FSM staff can delete an entire post/and or thread.
