Murphy strikes back (I broke the forums)
Posted by David Voss on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 9:51 PM
Take the night off everyone cause it looks like I broke the forums. Black Eye [B)]

I've heard from a number of people about being unable to post messages.  I think I know what the problem is and will fix it first thing in the morning.

In regards to the forum performance, it is rather horrible at the moment.  If I can't get the performance issues resolved in the morning, I'll re-enable the forums on the original server while we get this figured out.

My apologies to everyone.  This move was supposed to improve things, not make it worse.

Hopefully when things get back to normal tomorrow, you'll all have plenty to talk about other than how I broke the forums...

That's too bad. I guess the only bright shining moment is I don't have to wait to talk about how you broke the forums!

Ah, kicking a man when he's down isn't as much fun as you would think. Sad [:(]

So long folks!

Okay, the problems in regards to not being able to post messages, update profiles, upload avatars, etc. should be fixed now.  If you're reading this and unable to post, please send an email to webmaster@finescale.com with "FSM - unable to post" (or something along those lines) in the subject.

I guess this test post says I can post, but I've noticed the Forum load times seem longer than what I'm used to.

I made a small tweak.  I'm going to let it run on this server for awhile longer.  If you would please let me know if it seems to be running better or worse than before, I would really appreciate it.

If I click on a topic header, it seems load reasonably quickly.  When I try to go to another page in the post it either takes a really long time or just sits there.

Ok, the forums are working great for me now, very fast. (Oct 11, 9:25am PST).

Edit:  Hmmm... sometimes they go really fast for a bit, then it bogs down to a crawl again.  Very sporadic.

If you want to know, it is still sometimes very slow, sometimes very quick to navigate thru the forum.

You might want to check the smilies, David.  Some aren't working for some people.

Yeah, I would highly recommend using www.finescale.com for now.  Something is definitely not working right on the other server, which is where cs.finescale.com is being served from.

Yeah, I know.  Sad [:(]

It's probably going to be like that while both urls are setup for the forums.  I'm hoping we can get this resolved sometime next week.  In the meantime... use your imagination.  Wink [;)]

I remember what it was like when I programed.  The little things sometimes helped you figure out the big problems.  I wrote a hangman program once that crashed whenever certain words were used and one frame of the animation always failed to load and it skiped it.  Turned out some coding got switched fixing the animation helped fix the whole thing.  I thought the smilies might help narrow down the protocals with bugs in them.
