New posting editor
Posted by David Voss on Friday, October 27, 2006 11:12 AM

As you may have noticed, there is a new editor, TinyMCE, for posting messages to the forum.

This should be a big improvement over the old one.  If you're not seeing anything new, then use CTRL+R or the F5 key to force your browser to refresh it's cache.

Currently I have the buttons for emoticons (smileys) and images disabled as I need to make some adjustments to them.  I hope to have them enabled soon.

Please let me know what you think about it.

Well, it's different. I like some, don't like change, until I'm used to it. This seems to work faster. FYI I am using Firefox. Before, it would take about 10-20 seconds before I could type a post.

Be glad to see the emoticons return, too. Keep up the good work, David.

Dave,

It seems to be a bit faster,  and a bit touchier when typing, overall.  Will be happy to see the emoticons back;  I guess we will all adapt to this.

Gee, when I saw this topic heading I thought you meant a new Editor like the new associate Editors, and thought "boy is he going to take a ribbing with a nickname like TinyMCE..."

I like how the font size now shows the corresponding point size. Miss the emoticons, but I remember how to do most of them with simple text! ;)

So long folks!

Hi Dave,

It's not bad,  but I miss the button for adding links. I know how to code HTML, so I've used that feature, but the other way was a bit easier.

I'm also a bit annoyed that it automatically sets the line spacing and puts a non-breaking space at the beginning of each paragraph.

Regards,

-Drew

Are you not seeing the button for adding links?

Like the previous one, you also have to highlight the text you want to use as a link.  When you don't have any text highlighted, you should still see the button but it will appear "faded".

It's actually using <p> paragraph tags for spacing.  You can use SHIFT+Enter to start a new line w/o the paragraph.

Hi Dave,

Nope, I didn't see the button for adding links. It was faded. *blush*

Thanks also for telling me about the shift-enter to add soft returns. I should have guessed that would work.

However, I do appreciate the HTML option. That means I can (maybe) do things like:

addatable

Adding images should work pretty well too

That's interesting. My table shows up just fine in the preview, with a border, but not in the actual post.

I'm using Firefox 1.5.something in Windows XP.

Now you didn't think just because we have an HTML button that you could use whatever HTML you wanted to.  Wink [;)]

In the forum config, there's a list of designated html elements and attributes that users are allowed to include within their posts.  The border attribute wasn't in that list.  It is now.

Seems to work OK, but bring back the Emoticons.

The editor works great David- thanks! I think I used it before in developing a website for a client- it looks like what we used.....

The client loved it. We showed them the editing interface and they said "Oh- it's Word!" LOL

hi dave-- as far as the new editor goes, honestly, it seems fine ,but so did the old one--  i am on a 'high speed' cable link (or so i'm told--lol) and have not experienced some of the lag that some of the other folks mentioned--- i do have a problem though--- since i had to to a system recovery on my computer, i have had problems with post responces being forwarded to me-- Amanda Bothe helped me out and it worked for a  day or so -- not working any more:(--you helped me once before-- my personal files were all screwed up-- totally my fault---- any chance you or Amanda could dig through my user files and find what is wrong?-- I am sorry to be a pain in the butt-- i can't seem to fix it on my end---- sorry i got off topic-- i am just a little frustrated-- thanks for a great forum and any help you can give:)--- treadwell-- tgcricu@yahoo.com

All well and good, but ...

Are we going to get the IMAGE button back? If not, why not?

Use 'CTRL-C' and 'CTRL-P' on the keyboard to copy and paste.

I dislike this new editor, but have managed to get used to it... sorta...

Anybody notice (Dave, Amanda, Matt???) that the sticky notes have lost their grip?  They are being pushed down progressively further with new posts. At the moment the 1st sticky noted is at the bottom of page 1 and the next is on page 3.  Someone needs to call 3M!

I am OK with the new one, but I noticed that you also have the "link" insertion function disabled.

Why?

Try selecting the text you want to link first- that will activate it. Smile [:)]

What I have noticed throughtout this transition to the "new and improved" website is the thunderous silence from FSM on certain issues, such as the lack of an Image button, to wit:

  • E-mails are ignored.
  • PMs are ignored.
  • Letters are ignored.

Is it just me, or is this part of a larger trend of declining attention to detail?

There have been several threads from David Voss explaining those things.  He's in the process of fixing the code for the smileys so that they work with the new Internet Explorer 7.  That was also part of the reason for the editor change.... so that it would work with IE7.

For the hyper link function.... type in your web link, hightlight it, the hyperlink button activates... then click on it.
